Mariachi is mexican, of course it has influence from Spain due to the instruments but it has its origins in the late 19th century in Jalisco (mexican state), today it is world heritage and we still celebrate with mariachi in every special day.

Its a very common feature in mexican music (and latin american music in general) that it may seem very happy or festive while the lyrics are sad, or at least, meancholic. This song, La Cigarra ( The Cicada) is one clear example: "Under a tree shade, and with the beat of my guitar, I sang joyful this huapango, because the life is over, and I want to die singing as the ciclada dies".
