I was in 6th grade when I first heard this song. I was at my friend's house and I just got up and locked myself in her closet and cried and cried. I have always listened to lyrics very closely and loved writing, but she said everything about a horrible situation without saying it and it hit me hard at 13. I carried the weight and blame and guilt of my father's affair then, afraid to tell my mother, afraid of men, afraid of relationships future and present, afraid of love, figuring out what love is through that model as your hitting puberty and boys start trying to make moves on you and you aren't understanding why the man who is supposed to be with your mom, your Rockstar superhero of a woman mom. Gorgeous, smart, witty, started her own business as a therapist that helps special needs and disabled children, would go to the ends of the earth for me still although I'm 36 and living with her jobless at the moment. He loved that I knew about his affair, knew I'd stay quiet cause I was too afraid to hurt my mom, and he needed to distract her somehow and a 13 year old with a wild heart and big mouth was a dream come true.. all that betrayal, the lies I saw...I didn't speak for a while during all I could do was listen to music and let it speak for me cause I didn't know how to process. I hear this song now, understanding the "smoke and mirrors" metaphor, but i didn't know that then and I find it truly moving that I understood it without understanding it then..that's some powerful shit right there. She put her pain in that song and it could have been in a different language and I still would have felt it and I felt free that day, I wanted to kill myself bc I was trapped in this hell and couldn't tell a soul, but then I heard someone else feeling that same pain and I knew I wasn't alone and that everything i was feeling was OK and it wasn't my fault. A week later I told my mom. They're still together, so that's great! Meanwhile, I've never been able to have one single healthy relationship or even accept one if it showed up on my front porch. Thanks Natalie for being brave enough to speak your pain so I finally could too.
