James Kalm has, in the decades of tracking the art happenings in New York, gotten to know where many of the lesser-known venues for the presentation of creativity are located. The textile and fabric works displayed by Natasha Das seem to reference a strong heritage of Modernistic Western abstract design. However, within the compositions of brilliant color blocks, wondering stitched lines, and overlays of silken hues, the materials used embody a notion of the subversion of colonial strictures by their use of more native, rugged and hand-woven cloth. Three large “carpet paintings” by Antonio Santίn are marvels of this painter’s unique technical process. Using oil paint and various unusual tools Santίn paints rich ornamental motifs and tassels with a facture the extends the images into three dimensions. Finally, we zip to the Upper East side to make a brief stroll through of a sculpture exhibition by Arron Curry. While there’s a goofy, slapdash appearance to these works, with echoes of 1950s “Nuclear Style” motifs, Curry’s inclusion of the base or plinth as an integral part, and his formalistic use of open or negative space, make these painted sculptural pieces satisfying. This program was recorded October 19th and November 2nd, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

I never know quite what to make of incredibly detailed, highly proficient replication. I greatly admire the patience involved, but in the end, a carpet is a carpet.

Natasha Das’ smaller works are better than her bigger works… Santin’s great technique is mere technical invention. Aaron Curry reminds me of Picasso and Matta-not original, but I like it. 👍

Ms. Das' small piece at 8:12 seems the most promising - the contrast of apparent chaos and speed with her slow mark making using thread. And that little side extension is awesome - a kind of art joke I absolutely live for. Mr. Curry seemed a lot of Joan Miro with a side of Frank Stella? Perhaps some Picasso sprinkled in there also. Thank you James, and Kate.

I didn't do a running stream of consciousness narrative for the Curry show, but one artist whose influence I could sense was the great Isamu Noguchi check it out: www.pinterest.com/ama217/noguchi/

That's some beautiful music. James, I don’t understand the surface of those tapistry paintings. From here, they look like folded tapestry with a frame around them, but you say they're photorealistic paintings? So those folds aren't real; the surface is flat?

Interesting textile art, very painterly, but boy talk about monk work. I think the word you were trying to pronounce, TOILE, is a linen type fabric, pronounced like "twal". Thanks James and thankyou Kate!

It appears to me that Das' textile pieces are appropriations of Japanese boro and sashiko works rather than referencing Western abstraction. Curry's 'atomic era' motifs are reminiscent of Jean Arp. The soundtrack is very cool - who are the musicians?

I spoke a bit with the musicians when they took a break. I asked them what they call their music, they replied "ambient sound"... And, they were just jammin' and didn't have a formal name for their duo.

Why is it always women who work with sewing in art? After all, there are plenty of tailors and male fashion designers.
