So while putting this full cut (which I thought would be cool to add to this channel) of the show together, I took the opportunity to work a little bit more on some edits (nothing big, I only added a few tiny clips which I only found (or thought of) after finishing the original project and which, being the perfectionist I am, kinda left me like "Damn why am I seeing this now and not when I was working on the edit" 😅). But now it should truly be complete, hooray! Also, I sadly can‘t provide subtitles for this because it would take me an eternity to type all of that in, so if anyone needs / wants subtitles: Check out the playlist(s) on my channel with all of the songs uploaded in seperate videos. (And please just ignore that ugly watermark, I know it sucks but oh well)

So, I'm reading War & Peace, and I read Natasha as a normal teenager with all of the stereotypical drama of a Teenage Crush on Andrei (and later Anatole) and assorted normal teenage girl behavior. Hearing the Natasha performer sing of her love for Andrei in this production, she makes be a true-believer of her deep and devoted love and longing for Andrei. She is SOOOOOO talented.

I just wish strobes weren't used at all. It's the theatre so there are so many other ways to create effects that aren't strobes. I'm not epileptic but I am a lighting designer and i find strobes completely unsettling and hugely unnecessary.

Pierre Bezhukov has been my ideal role-model for decades. By the time I heard of this show, a medical emergency put seeing it on hold. Unfortunately, by the time things stabilized for me, tickets had become scarce, and made traveling to NYC just for this, iffy. Then came the sad situation which resulted in the closing. Perhaps the only regret in my life? 🤷‍♂️ All I know is, I’m looking forward to being at Opening Night for the West Coast premiere of Shotgun Players production of NATASHA, PIERRE, & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812, in Berkeley CA, November 2022!

Denée Benton is FANTASTIC. I initially always gravitated towards the off-broadway cast recording because I felt really entranced by Phillipa Soo’s acting in the recording. I think many cast recordings can water down intense songs so that they are more palatable for albums. (Case in point- Eva Noblezada in the vast album for the revival of Miss Saigon vs the recording for Hadestown.) I am always for embracing those acting choices and letting the recording reflect the the actual show, but I understand that it’s often a production influence or actors choice. I think that’s the case with Denée Benton- her voice is gorgeous but between the two albums I always chose Phillipa’s for the acting. However, this bootleg is outstanding. She sounds amazing in the album but is truly so unfettered and blazing on stage. Love her in this role!!!

If you want another inspiration for your Tchaikovsky project, I suggest checking out another of Dave Malloy's shows, Preludes! It's a very abstract(and even more anachronistic than some of the lines and visuals here) "musical fantasia" set in the mind of Sergei Rachmaninov, as he visits a hypnotherapist to try to get over his three year writers block(caused by the disastrous premier performance of his first symphony) so he could start composing music again. It premiered Off Broadway in 2015, had it's Off West End premiere in 2019(with select concert performances professionally recorded, which people payed to watch online during the start of the pandemic), and it even has a song sung between Rach and Tchaikovsky(called "Tchaikovsky's Child's Song")!!! Also, unlike most composer/musician biopics that either make up music or just reuse their work, this show's score walks the very fine line of effectively utilizing excerpts of Rachmaninov(and other composer's)'s work, bringing out it's various contemporary influences in a more rock/jazz/electronica stylized format, and even creating entirely new songs/scenes based around those pieces! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preludes_(musical) Here's the Off Broadway Cast Album(with the likes of Nikki M. James, Gabriel Ebert, Chris Sarandon(Known for playing Prince Humperdinck in the Princess Bride and providing the speaking voice for Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas) as Tchaikovsky/Tolstoy/etc., and more), and the Genius.com page(with comments and notes by Dave Malloy himself) that goes with it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rr17ncuBq5uqiac.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rq6mq616x9_Zdpc.html genius.com/albums/Dave-malloy/Preludes-original-cast-recording Hope you enjoy, and good luck on your project(if your still working on it)!

Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 was a beloved musical that captured the hearts of audiences with its dazzling tale set in 19th century Russia. But what if this story was reimagined in a modern 21st century setting, with a twist of thrilling espionage and intrigue? In this retelling, Natasha is a successful entrepreneur and secret service agent, tasked with a dangerous mission that could change the course of history. She is a fierce, independent woman who is not afraid to take risks for the greater good. Natasha's fashion sense is edgy and bold, reflecting her fearless personality - she is often seen in grunge-inspired outfits that make a statement wherever she goes. On the other hand, Pierre is a respected journalist known for his investigative skills and sharp wit. He is always dressed in sleek workwear fashion, exuding an air of sophistication and intelligence. Pierre is drawn into Natasha's world when he uncovers a conspiracy that could threaten national security, and the two must work together to unravel the truth. As Natasha and Pierre navigate the dangerous waters of political intrigue, they find themselves caught in a web of lies and deception. Natasha is wrongly accused of a crime she did not commit, and Pierre is determined to clear her name. The main concourse of their mission is a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, as they race against time to uncover the truth before it's too late. The story unfolds with melodious dance sequences that serve as a backdrop to the intense drama unfolding onscreen. The choreography is dynamic and captivating, drawing the audience into the heart of the action. As Natasha and Pierre face obstacles and betrayals at every turn, their bond grows stronger, forging a deep connection that transcends their differences. But when a police informant leads them astray, Natasha finds herself wrongfully imprisoned, and Pierre must fight against all odds to free her. Along the way, they encounter a cast of eccentric characters, from a quirky photographer with a knack for uncovering secrets to a mysterious interior designer with a hidden agenda. As the stakes rise and the deadline looms, Natasha and Pierre must race against time to uncover the conspiracy that threatens to tear their world apart. The journey takes them on a whirlwind adventure through the bustling streets of the city, aboard a luxury cruise boat that glides across a tranquil lake at sunset. Amidst the chaos and danger, Natasha and Pierre find solace in each other's arms, their love blossoming amidst the chaos of their mission. The liquid of their passion flows freely, intertwined with the sensual energy that crackles between them. But as they delve deeper into the mystery at hand, they realize that their feelings for each other may be their ultimate weakness. In the end, Natasha and Pierre emerge victorious, their bond stronger than ever. The thrilling journey they embarked on has changed them forever, shaping their destinies in ways they never imagined. As they look towards the future, they know that they will always have each other, no matter what challenges lie ahead. The modern retelling of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 is a riveting tale of love, betrayal, and redemption, set against the backdrop of a world on the brink of chaos. It is a story that captures the timeless essence of human resilience and the power of love to conquer all obstacles.

I like that when Helene is tempting Natasha to go out, she's wearing green, like she's the snake tempting Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. SPOILER: I also realized that this is the point at which I stopped reading War & Peace, because I was so upset with Andrey's decision. In the book it's made clear that Natasha was really too young and naive to realize that she wasn't in love with Anatole, it was just infatuation. And then he can't forgive her. Dude ruined a whole book for me.

I can honestly understand him being upset with her, given that he‘s literally returning from the war to these news… Though a lot of the times Andrey does behave unnecessarily cold-hearted in the book, which made it hard for me to really take a liking to him as a character. I get him in that particular situation though, and he does forgive her later on, after all

Seeing the actual acting makes me realize something I never pulled from the recording. Natasha wasn't JUST a wreckless 20-year-old. Even Marya D. undertood she felt restrained and wanted freedom, but it was risky to seek.
