I like how Nate has told the "Hot Tub Time Machine" story at least 4 times on the podcast where Greg Giraldo asks Craig Robinson "what's that movie about?" He found it so funny that the question had to be asked about a story with that title. Then Dusty mentions the book "My Teacher is an Alien" and Nate immediately asks, with complete sincerity, "what's that about?"

I don't think it was with sincerity. He was making a joke. I'm surprised he didn't bring up the story again this time around.

I'd like to hear an episode about companies that used to sponsor the podcast. Was Magic Spoon Cereal really that tasty? Did Keeps finally realize that maybe Butler was not the best spokesperson for their product? Did Helix start to worry that they were basically being likened to a cheap hotel mattress based on the number and variety of people Nate was always talking about checking in to his guest bedroom? Where are these companies now and why are we folks no longer worth their advertising dollars?

I’d love a shout-out to all Nateland Fans who (like me) found the podcast recently and put in the time to start from the beginning and listen to all the episodes. At an average length of 2 hours per episode, that’s 228 hours of content. I looked it up and 228 hours also happens to be the exact amount of time it would take to watch every episode of both The West Wing and The Office. I’m looking forward to the next 33 episodes, which will match the 66 hours of the Seinfeld series. Keep up the good work, gentlemen!

I'm a little worried the guy Dusty is talking about was my cousin. He was going to see Dusty, and I told him to yell "hey bear!" and he said he would. And it just sounds like an interaction that he'd be involved in. It's my fault. I should have known better than to turn him loose with "hey bear" when he wasn't ready. I'm sorry, Dusty. Edit to update - It was my cousin. I just spoke to him, and he confirmed he was that guy. He's ... well, I don't know enough words to explain him, but it is my fault. He agreed to give me the one of the autographed hats Dusty signed for him. Again, sorry for my role in it.

@@PaulieD1122, lol I almost hope my comment gets lost in the rest of them. He asked me how I knew about what happened and I told him it was the first thing they talked about on the podcast. He said "what did he say happened?" 😆 That's when I knew Dusty likely told the polite version of the story. I don't want to share too much about him, but without context of why he is like he is, the dude can seem some type of way. But he's a veteran who maybe doesn't read a room as good as he should sometimes, and it can come off as abrasive. I definitely should have known better than to set him up like that, but I wasn't thinking about him just shouting it in the middle of the show LOL

Hey bear! You can definitely tell Nate doesnt listen to song lyrics by his choice of "Cleopatra" by the Lumineers as his song at the beginning of his 30 minute special on Netflix. Its literally one of my favorite songs in general but its about an elderly woman who is dying alone because she was so overwhelmed with grief after her father died that she refused the proposal of the man she had loved when she was younger. Now when I listen to it I think about Nate just bobbing his head along to this depressing song haha Love you guys! Best podcast ever!

I think Nate sharing his opinions is a part of the podcast that I appreciate the most. Many people are constantly shoving their opinions in your face and telling you why theirs are superior to yours, and I think Nate is afraid that he’s doing the same, but he’s not. He doesn’t claim to know everything, he doesn’t have political gains to make, he’s a comedian sharing his thoughts on his podcast in an often funny and relatable way. As he often says, being yourself is important, and that’s what he’s doing. And in a world where everyone is trying to be someone else, that’s one of the best things you can do.

Aaron I feel your pain. For a year of high school I had a tire that would go flat in about 3 hours. So every day before school and before going home I would use a portable air pump that plugged into my cigarette lighter in the car. It's amazing how I avoided getting it fixed or replaced because it was too much work. Yet I would sit outside in MN winter for 5-10 minutes every time I wanted to go somewhere and didn't think twice about it. My dad said "It takes a lot of work to be that lazy" and I think about it to this day when I procrastinate something simple.

It took several years but i was finally able to break free of online / phone games I was addicted to because of the gambling/loot box aspect. I quit one game I felt I had a decent spending problem on and maybe spent a total of $500 on only to start a different game that over 2 years I possibly spent $10k on. Often thinking about all the money I had spent would make me feel sick with myself then next thing I knew I was spending more. I successfully broke the addiction 8-12 months ago and am now trying to help my wife with her same addiction. We make good money but never had anything in the bank. It wasn’t until I looked back 12+ months and tracked our income vs spending to realize what we were doing to ourselves financially. Good luck to anyone else out there suffering from the same. You’re not alone.

Just wanna do a little clarifying to Beatles research, Elon actually was not the founder of Tesla, Eberhard and Tarpenning founded Tesla in 2003 and Elon decided to buy the company out and in his contract he made a demand that he must be named CEO and given the title “Co-Founder” despite joining the company 5 years after its founding. Elon joined in Oct 2008, at which point Tesla was already seeing an increase in productivity so it would be more accurate to say Tesla took a gamble and Elon came into the picture as the payout. People often confuse Musk for the founder when it’s just not the case

Nate, I’m just like you with music. My wife used to call me a sociopath for “not caring” about music. I know what I like and will listen to it but ask me to sing or tell you the words and I’ll stare at you with a blank look on my face. For our wedding we wanted to have parts personal to us and each picked out the music to walk out to or play at different times. I listened to tons of songs until I decided on what I would come out to. Jump forward to our wedding day and half the people are laughing when my instrumental version of “One” by Metallica comes on. I thought they were all being rude and at the reception got some high fives and laughs and was still dumbfounded until someone played the version with the lyrics for me. Nate, for you and others like us, here are the lyrics to the song I walked out to on my wedding day: “One” by Metallica I can't remember anything Can't tell if this is true or dream Deep down inside I feel to scream This terrible silence stops me Now that the war is through with me I'm waking up, I cannot see That there's not much left of me Nothing is real but pain now Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh, please God, wake me Back in the womb, it's much too real In pumps life that I must feel But can't look forward to reveal Look to the time when I'll live Fed through the tube that sticks in me Just like a wartime novelty Tied to machines that make me be Cut this life off from me Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh, please God, wake me Now the world is gone, I'm just one Oh, God, help me Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh, please God, help me Darkness imprisoning me All that I see, absolute horror I cannot live, I cannot die Trapped in myself Body, my holding cell Landmine has taken my sight Taken my speech, taken my hearing Taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul Left me with life in hell

Dusty, your Adam Sandler double “V” name alliteration discussion reminded me of the double “L” name alliteration in the Superman universe. Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Lex Luther, and so on. I wonder if Sandler and his fellow writers are tipping their hat to this for fun. If so it would be considered an Easter Egg. Which, by the way, would make a really neat episode topic for the pod. They only started calling them Easter Eggs in the last twenty years, but Hollywood has been sneaking in little hidden jokes and nods to other actors/films for years and years. Disney has its own depth on the topic with hidden Mickeys and many many others.

When you guys mentioned Snopes and the 2 people looking up stuff it reminded me of a job I had back in college doing something similar. It was a competitor of Snopes but you could text questions to a number and get an answer quickly. We were given a time limit to answer it either based on your own knowledge of the question or you could google it. There was a website to log into and start having messages pop up to reply to, for each message you replied to you'd earn some money. Nothing substantial mind you, I believe it was like a quarter or something like that. We were encouraged to be funny and witty with our replies but that snowballed into me insulting the people for asking such dumb questions.. even though I still used the service myself for random questions and facts. I haven't thought about that job in like 10 years, thanks for the memory jog!

One of my friends connects to it and begins to play Take Me Home (just one time as a joke). Speaking of knowing NOTHING about soccer and the keeper: My middle son, Bode, was a rising sophomore in summer of 2020. None of his usual sports were guaranteed. Many of his friends played soccer and suggested he try out for the team because they needed more keepers. He's very athletic and likes throwing his body around so we figured he'd make the team. But none of us knew anything about soccer. His first game, he wasn't sure how to return the ball, he looked at the ref and other team and said, "I'm new here." He played the second half of every game, and had a lot of saves but many of them were creative to say the least, like the time he used his head. Coach said, "Bode, great save. Never do that again." We spent the season in the bleachers listening to the other parents' collective gasping whenever Bode was at the goal. After the head save, I heard one dad say, "That kid scares the hell out of me." The JV team had a winning season, and Bode successfully tried a new sport with his homies. Couldn't be prouder. P.S. I thought they were called "stops" until just now, my husband said they're called "saves." Hey Bear, love y'all:)

I know the joke is always that Nate is dumb but when he talks about his career, the importance of not comparing yourself to others and his general outlook on how to live life, it's evident that he's very intelligent and grounded. I work in mental health and I wish my clients had the insight Nate does. I really resonate with Nate's view and some of my favourite phrases are "without challenge, there is no change" and "you don't grow when you're comfortable." He could have a side hustle as a life coach. On a side note if Bigtop ever has a special, I think he found his title: "I Strive to be Average."

There are several theories about Hotel California. Three main ones are: Drugs/Alcohol addiction, Mental Asylum, and doing time in CA state prison. Each of those theories have corresponding lyrics in the song that can support each scenario. As far as I know, the band refused to share their inspiration for creating the song, and its probably for the better.
@wakenow7612
@wakenow7612 Жыл бұрын
All wrong. The band stated that the song is about the materialism of California and being sucked into the Hollywood musical entertainment beast system, and how the industry is basically like selling your soul for fame metaphorically, and it runs people into the ground.

I've been watching the show "alone" on netflix. 10 people are dropped off in the wilderness completely alone and are expected to survive as long as possible. In the show they are constantly saying "Hey Bear" as they move around trying to avoid running into grizzly bears. This got me thinking, who would survive the longest among the 4 of you and why would "barnum & bailey" be the first one out?

Even though there was minimal gambling talk on the ‘sode…. I find it was a fitting topic for this week. I placed my first sports bet ever on the Texas Alabama game. I put a big ten bucks on my Longhorns and WOW! I figured I was kissing my money goodbye, but that game was unbelievable and I almost had an extra $160 in my pocket. Guess I’ll keep my day job. The edge sorting case involving Phil Ivey was actually a Baccarat game in which Phil told the Borgata hotel that he was willing to gamble an insane amount of money if they promised to use a certain type of playing card and rotate the cards a certain way because he was superstitious. They agreed to the demands, but later sued (and won) to have their money returned after losing over $10 million dollars to him. The judge ruled he was not cheating, but the house was cheated based on the demands giving an unfair advantage since the house did not have the proper info.

Nate should get a Tibetan spaniel. We have one and it’s the best breed we’ve ever had. Tibetan spaniels are extremely low maintenance, they don’t have to be walked because they are low energy. They also have a lower bark and don’t bark a lot. They are great lap dogs.

Circling back to Nate not listening to song lyrics, the song Hook by Blues Traveler is about exactly that. Basically he says if the tune is catchy enough you can say whatever you want. And then “the hook brings you back”. So don’t feel bad Nate, just proves you are The Greatest Average American.

Aaron Judge turned down the Yankees’ offer of $213.5 Million at the beginning of this season and bet on himself that he’d be worth more in the free agent market after this year. Since then he’s the clear AL MVP and he’s on track to be the new (real) homerun king. I loved everyone’s stories about the risks you took to get where you are. I bet on myself and became a full time musician 6 years ago and it was the best decision of my life. (PS - I also don’t think lyrics are that important)

How about an episode on Superstitions? The Mets recently had Timmy Trumpet do live walkout music for pitcher Edwin Diaz and the Mets immediately went on an 8 game losing streak. Jerry Seinfeld blamed it on “that stupid trumpet performance”, saying “Celebrating in season. We haven’t won anything yet. Bad mojo.” He then compared it to the Baha Men doing a live performance of Who Let the Dogs Out being responsible for the Mets losing the World Series in 2000. With sports, and the world I general, being rife with superstitions, I think it’s be a fun episode.

You have to give the premier league a chance too, check out Pulisic with Chelsea and Leeds United has an American coach and 2 stars of the US national team Tyler Adams and Brendan Aaronson! Just like Danny Rojas said, "Futbol is Life!"

I’d really hate to see you guys stop giving your “opinions” on the show. Honestly, I’ve never heard any of you share something that was controversial or mean. Part of the reason we all listen is to get to know y’all better. Hearing your thoughts on different topics is fun. It allows us to feel like we’re having a conversation with you. Unfortunately, some people are just easily offended or looking for an argument. Don’t let them steal something from the show that most of us truly enjoy. In the end, all we want is to keep havin’ a good time.
