I've also heard from several sources to store valuables in the dishwasher if a hurricane is coming. The dishwasher is airtight and will keep important documents, etc safe if your house gets flooded. (Probably recommended to also put the documents in a ziplock bag before you put it in the dishwasher...)

I adored hearing Nate walk through his own thoughts on the reality of the microwave for, what sounded like, the first time. We recently remodeled our kitchen and didn't even make the space for one to be plugged in. It definitely falls under the American psyche of "I don't care if it's harmful, just make sure it's easy and I won't think about it too much." It's called "nuking" for a reason. Love the show, love ya'll, keep solving the world's problems guys!!

Hello, folks! In high school, a buddy and I selected microwaves as our topic for the science fair. We learned that microwaves heat up your food by heating the water inside your food. Those hot water molecules inside your food are what actually heat the food around them, so putting a cup of water in your microwave while your food is warming up definitely helps. It's especially helpful when heating up beef, chicken, or pork because it will heat up the meat without completely drying it out because it uses moisture from the water cup instead of draining all the water out of the meat and leaving you with dry, sad leftovers.

It was such a great moment in the show when Aaron spoke about his grandfather’s Air Force tattoo and Nate asked if it was a “desk”! I almost spit out my morning coffee laughing. Hey folks and hello Dusty. We had a good time watching the podcast. The idiom "jumping the shark" or "jump the shark" is a pejorative that is used to argue that a creative work or entity has reached a point in which it has exhausted its core intent and is introducing new ideas that are discordant with, or an over-exaggeration of, its original purpose. The phrase was coined in 1985 by radio personality Jon Hein in response to a 1977 episode from the fifth season of the American sitcom Happy Days, in which the character Fonzie while in Los Angeles jumps over a shark while on water-skis.

Hello folks and hey bear. Speaking of robberies, in 1992 I worked delivery at a local Pizza Hut and we were close to closing when 3 guys rushed in and robbed us at gunpoint. One guy watched the door while another rushed us (the staff) to the back and the third guy emptied two registers. It took about 90 seconds. They made off with about $100 since the cashiers made regular drops in the safe. They fled on foot. Had they taken the time to rob us (the wait staff and delivery drivers) they probably would have gotten 5 or 600 more dollars as we all had cash on us from tips. Cheers, Rick Sanford, III (that's Sanford with one D).

Super heating occurs when you microwave water to above boiling point without it actually boiling. This occurs in vessels like Pyrex where the surface is so smooth that there are no rough areas for bubbles to form. Super heated water lies dormant until something less smooth like a metal spoon creates an area where rapid boiling occurs, or an explosion.

Comment about cars. My first car was a 1995 Toyota Camry. The car was a boat. We got it from someone who lived in Arizona and it had a carpet installed on the dash to protect it from sun damage. We put in our own CD player...it was one of the ones that flipped around when you turned the car on. Anyway, it was a complete boat car. I had just graduated high school and my dad would continually tell me to put oil in the car. I would say to myself..."Sure Dad. Sure. Cars need oil okay." I didn't put oil in the car for at least a year and a half to two years. One day I'm driving home on the highway from my class at COMMUNITY COLLEGE 15 miles from my house...and smoke starts pouring out from under the hood. The engine was on fire because the engine was completely out of oil. Not knowing what to do, I just drove home. I burned my hand opening the hood. Smoke flying out the sides of hood. I tried to put coolant into engine to try and cool it and it would instantly boil and splash out on me. Needless to say...the car was dead. Learned a few things about the importance of oil that day. Dad just shook his head.

Hey Bear! Superheated steam (water) is when the pressure on the water is higher than its correlating boiling point (212 degrees) Usually only possible when the steam is under pressure. Mythbusters did something on it years ago. They did it with distilled water, but realized that distilled water doesn't boiler because there are no impurities, so they did tap and distilled at the same time. So they'd know when the tap started to boil the distilled water was getting close to superheated. Then they dropped a fork and sugar cube in and they immediately boiled over. Not an explosion, but it would definitely burn you. Keep up the good work fellers.

Thank you Nate for the clear message to teenagers not to be stupid! If only you were around to advise in the 90's... We didn't think of it as "branding" at the time, but my hoodlum circle of friends thought it was cool to heat up a standard cigarette lighter and press the top of it to your skin, resulting in a smiley-face scar from the burn. As a 16 year old girl, thinking this was a great way to prove myself in my mostly-guy friend group, I went for the smiley-face just below my collarbone. Turns out the lighter was too hot and the scar ended up looking like two pointless ovals - still visible in my wedding photos in my 30s. Super proud of my decision-making capabilities.

I love the microwave conversation. I turn 50 at the end of the month. And, I am noticing my distrust for this machine is becoming greater. I no longer stand in front of the microwave when it is running. I snicker when the FDA says it is safe. How can it be completely safe when we are "nuking" the food. I believe the only true recent advancement in appliances is the air fryer. Tastes much better than food from a microwave. And, it should be safer. I hope....I use it everyday.

My parents still don't have a dishwasher. My dad said he didn't need a dishwasher because he had 4 sons (and liked the conversations with mom during dishes). We probably washed the dishes less than we remember. I would often have to conveniently "go to the bathroom." My youngest brother would "sweep the floor." Aaron's right though; there were plenty of good conversations. I washed the non-dishwasher dishes last night with my two sons (ages 5 and 9) I kind of get the appeal, but the sprayer soon became a squirtgun and they have no idea where things go. I'll go proofread this now.

Hello Nate, Dusty, Aaron, and Bubble Bass- The reason microwave ovens (the appliance) don't harm you or your food is because microwaves (the radiation) are non-ionizing, which is much different than x-ray. I don't want to get too deep into the science, but it basically means it won't do harm to your atoms. Other non-ionizing light waves are radio, infrared, and visible light. It only becomes dangerous with ultraviolet, x-ray, and gamma waves. The reason microwave ovens have the mesh screen in front is to block the microwaves from escaping the appliance and causing burns. The wavelength of microwaves is very large compared to visible light, which is why we can see inside but not be harmed by the heat and why we can open the door right away and be fine. Love you guys!

My wife and I make a cake that needs to be chilled to add the frosting. I will immediately put cake from the oven to the fridge. Now I know why the milk always expires early. This truly is an educational podcast. Keep it up folks!

Good question about what is best for the environment, the single use plate or washing dishes, Aaron. When i was pregnant and trying to decide if i wanted to use cloth or disposal diapers, i researched what was worse in my area- landfills or water shortages. For my daughter, i used cloth diapers (for anout 6 months then got lazy...lol), and for my son i went all disposable, love you guys.

Hello Fellas, I work at a lowes and sell appliances from time to time so this one was a good one for me. Just know they make a washer dryer combo that can just plug into a regular outlet and not be vented. It will text you when it’s done. “We’re having a good time”

Regarding the million dollar fine for speeding, people have argued "If the penalty for a crime is a fine, then it's only illegal for the poor." It seems to me making it a percentage of your income helps level the field a bit. Although I do agree, I would be interested in where those million dollars end up!

Oh my goodness . . . we might need an Appliances, Part 2. I work in a law firm with 20 smart attorneys and other staff. We had to buy a new microwave for our kitchen about 3 years ago. Not one single person in the firm can figure out how to set the clock on the microwave. It has been flashing 12 for three years. Keep up the great work!

Aaron sneaking in the wiki change….Nicely done. Loved watching the ACC even though they didn’t show Nate play at all. Told my husband about how you said it’s kid friendly and I think he is planning a trip in his head now for next year.

Aaron, some of the drawers below the stove are only for storage and some are warming drawers controlled by the controls. Different prices.
