I am a Brit who moved to the US after getting married. I miss the NHS, I miss feeling safe. I miss walking to the corner shop for a loaf of bread and pint of milk. I miss feeling safe when I go for walks. I miss cheap food and Gregg's sausage rolls. I miss the beautiful British countryside and the canals. I miss having paid holiday and enough time off to recoup. I miss paid sick leave. I miss a real work life balance and the ability to head to Europe for a weekend and not worry about being late for work on Monday or losing my job for being ill. Things I would miss if I left the US....owning a home. That's it. The politics is filthy, the safety is terrible, the medical is effing expensive and I don't trust most providers because they are incentivized by money. We would love to move back, but my missus has more family here than I do over there.

I really hope you enjoy your time and stay in Germany, you will have to start to support the local football team, mingle with the locals and feel free from gun violence, police brutality, have access to health care, escape the drug crisis in the US and experience a far more peaceful, free country where you actually feel safe.

I've been in Germany from the states going on 15 years now. My wife is also German. I haven't been back to the states and probably will never return. I have a good life in Germany. Just know you have to accept the good with the bad when you move to a place especially to a different country. It will take time to adjust sometimes years.

Americans live nervously on the edge because it is so easy to loose everything within a day once you loose your job. We Europeans are much more relaxed because we have a safety net that gives you time to readjust, without loosing income, house, healthcare.

Great video! im originally from the us but moved to the uk when i was 23 when i moved to the uk. i would say generally people work between 35- 40 hrs a week here. i used to do sales and customer service over the phone for years, but a couple of years ago i decided i wasnt motivated or happy any more...i quit and started up my own garden and Landscaping business and so glad i did! i work around 15-20 hrs a week and make as much if not more than i used sitting behind a desk for 40 hrs. im very much behind the idea that everyone is much happier doing less hours and in turn a happy employee is a more productive one...lol if that makes sense 🤔🤷‍♂️

At least in Europe , there are beautiful places to see and visit . Good food and feeling of the safety . Nothing like this in the U.S. The so called " Park" once was relatively safe to visit is not safe anymore . The quality of food here 😂 I can write a dissertation. One thing want to say . No.matter how uneasy life can be in Europe, you are lucky you are there.

As an American that probably is used to driving distances, you will love moving to Germany when it comes to traveling around. The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria, Switserland, Italy, Poland heck even the UK are just a few hours driving away.

I don't need 50 different types of tolette paper. I'm just wiping my ass with that stuff. It's more important to me to have 50 different types of good bread to choose from. Or on marketplace every weekend end to get fresh goods from the farmers here. (at the moment it's time for sparagels and strawberries) I also don't need a free cola or sprite, at the market, there I get every time so much cheese from the Dutch to try or fruit from the farmers to try Or fresh fish, crabs and smoked eel from the North Sea to try that I am always full after shopping and have to sit outside with a coffee and drink a coffee to digest. Even a trader from Belgium and France come here to sell their specialties, which of course you have to try first. you are almost forced to do so. The other day I bought a piece of Bleu de Bresse from the Frenchman and didn't want to try anything else.When the merchant reproached me if I don't like French food. So I had to try a soft cheese, which of course comes from mild to strong. I then took the mild one. (The dealers already know how to seduce customers to buy something) 😄 And as far as nature is concerned. Sure, the USA has a lot of natural wonders to offer. But Europe is also a whole continent. No other continent in the world has so many different climate zones and different landscapes to offer in a relatively small area as Europe. You can ski in the high mountains in the morning and swim in the warm Mediterranean in Italy or France in the afternoon if you want. Europe has polar areas in the north and subtropical in the south. 39% of the area of the EU alone consists of forest. If you want to see whales, bears, sea lions and seals, wolves or eagles, bison or lynxes, etc., you don't have to go far. In addition, all EU countries can enter any area, whether privately owned or state-owned. In Germany, you can swim in any lake or river because the nature conservation laws are strict and no one is allowed to close off their private property or drive them away

I am Dutch, and to be honest I kind of feel bad for US police. They don't have an easy job. Due to gun ownership in the USA, US-police have to treat people as more of a potential threat when they arrest them, for instance. The potential for gun ownership makes the situation a lot more volatile. Then if you take into account that US-police only receive 21 weeks of training, you can see how things easily go wrong. In Germany for instance training takes 2 to 3 years. So I think if gun ownership were more strict and if training were much more elaborate, then a lot could improve for the USA in the law-enforcement area. BTW - pretty cool that youre moving to Europe! :) I understand its not nice to feel like youre giving up on the USA, but you also have to take into account that you only live once. Its important to be happy, and there is nothing ethically wrong with seeking greener pastures in the pursuit of happiness. You should try to not burden yourself with guilt about this. Its not necessary, because you deserve to be happy! I look forward to being able to see the move happen on this channel :) I subscribed!

Most restrooms in Europe are free, at least the 25+ countries I have visited. It's often at train stations, malls etc where you need to pay, not gas stations etc. It's often the places where drug addicts roam you have to pay, to deter them from using toilets as needle rooms. I might be wrong and there are more places you have to pay, but that is my experience as a Norwegian travelling. In Norway it's exactly like that, free everywhere except big train stations and central locations in Oslo.

A well balanced show, Nate. At least from a non-US national point of view. I do like visiting America, though the public transport rarely goes where I want to go. And trains seem to run on calendars not timetables, at least between, say, Fredericksburg Va and NYC. I know goods trains take precedence there, and It rankles. Hope your health is good these days. When you get settle in Germany, don't miss to visit Sweden.... Especially the northern part.

I was at a job fair in my state. There was a woman in her 50's crying. She was sharply dressed and had a folder filled with her resumes. She was recently laid off after 25 years with a company, and lost her healthcare insurance. She was begging for a job so she could afford her medication. I hope she found a job.

Just like the Germans, me as a dutchie go to the store everyday, sometimes even twice, i get what i need per day and get fresh stuff per day. If you buy for a week or month, you most likely also buy food that is less healthy since it has all these chemicals in there to keep it "fresh".

❤❤I feel you! I worked 15 years in the US. So sad what has happend like during the last 10 years I have been living in Finland. Sometimes you have to go far to be able to see what is closest to you. Bro, I hear you as with so many other Americans. I served with the US Army for 8 years and research projects with the DoD down in Fort Huachuca and I'm guilty of being one of those IT guys. I have no children and divorced. I guess I should have requested a government-issued wife. Thus I have much less to lose than with service men and women with children. Yet, someone has to hold the line until there is peace within our once-great borders. Corporate greed and narcissistic leadership have eroded this experiment. If civil war has to happen [I do not like war but I understand why] and peace comes back and hopefully you and your family celebrate those American Hallmark Channel three-day weekends remember the many of us who have tried to fix something toxic and addictive that should have been left broken and buried.

Good to see you're back, healthy and that you've finalised your plans. You shop like we do in the UK, one big shop per week. Takes an hour, door to door.... The work life balance is the most important thing, keeps you healthy. So the two things you can't buy, health and time, are the things you can't have in the US.... The news in the UK is similar to you guys, we have to vote soon and no one knows who to vote for because they're all as bad as each other! It all seems aggressive and judgmental. Everyone's job is important and you're right, we all find our level and there is nothing wrong with that. I worked with a guy who when he retired was happy to stand in front of the same lathe for more than 25 years, he was a very good machinist (I was a Quality Inspector, so I knew) he was very happy, he'd been offered promotion and always turned (Excuse the pun!) it down. He had found his level, he said he had a nice house, nice car, nice holidays and a good family. Good for him and 30 years later, I'm still convinced he got it right, he got it right for him and that's what counts. Looking forward to your new adventures

Paradise on earth doesn't exist! But surely the culture and lifestyle of countries differ a lot. And if Germany suits you, why not? Besides, during a few days off, you can easily go anywhere in Europe. A lot to see and enjoy!

About the car - and related things - most of us who do comparisons are urban dwellers - if you live in the country, it's more likely that things will be similar. I have a friend living in an old farmhouse about 1 hr from my home (Toronto) and she could say the exact same things as someone from Europe.

And when you're in Germany, make sure you take a flight to come and visit Ireland. I moved here from Germany nearly 20 years ago.

He’s exaggerating about the toilet paper. I just checked, the main chain, Albert Heijn, sells 59 different kinds. The Lidl has less choice but more than two. The Lidl is beside my apartment building. There’s also a Turkish supermarket at the other side of the building, and a Moroccan bakery, that also sells French types of bread. 10 minute walk there is another supermarket. And less than 10 minutes on the bike there I a shopping plaza, with 2 supermarkets.

It looks like that its common for ex-military to go to the police, and i think thats part of the problem in the US, also that people think ex soldiers a good cops because they know how to use a gun, like shooting would be the most importand thing for a cop. But soldiers are not trained to deescalate or law enforcement, they are trained to kill without thinking and survive on a battlefield, thats are very bad habits for a cop. As a result you have people on a power trip enforcing the law with the gun or people like the "acorn cop". Here in Germany thats uncommon, you go to the police or the military, not first to the military and then to the police.

I can't see the benefit in Officecompetition. In an old Job, No one helps eachother just to see the other one fail. In my present Job, we're working as a Team. Much more fun to spend time in Office.

Hi, I think it does not matter much whether you go to Germany, Italy, Austria .... or almost any other country here. There are a lot of benefits .. mentioned in other comments. ... but for sure you will miss some US things. It´s normal.

Expat is, by definition, temporary. Immigration is more of a permanent nature.

Spending less than a week in a single country is a waste of time. Youve seen almost nothing and experienced even less. It generally takes a couple of days just to land, mentally, to be able to actually take the experiencr in. If youre gonna spend a just day or two, you might as well not go. If you have two weeks, spend it in one country, then pick another for your next vacation. Time is a finite resource and the lost valuable we have. Spending 1 day a country for 10 days is like having 1 bite out of 10 dishes. Sure, youve technically tasted them all, but you rushed through it and didnt even experience the full meal. Would that actually be a worth while experience? Or would sitting down with one of these dishes, taking your time and enjoying your meal be time better spent?

Coffee is black. Possibly with sugar. If you wanna stretch it, a tiny dash of milk. Personally, black is the only acceptable one for myself. But the other two is as far as Im willing to bend the rules for other people. Anything beyond that is not coffee. Its a coffee-drink. A drink with coffee *_in_* it. If you dont like coffee, thats fine, dont drink it. But dont ruin it with 600 addatives and then insist on still calling it coffee. Its not. Its like taking apple pie and then drown it in chilly untill you cant taste the pie anymore and still calling it apple pie. "but I dont like the taste otherwise" is not a valid answer, if thats the case, DONT fakking eat it.
