Good sermon. I wonder what Nathan LeMaster would say after reading Michael Reeves' book "Rejoice & Tremble" on the Fear of the Lord. Reeves points out there are two types of fears demonstrated in Scripture that LeMaster notes too. Reeves explains the type of fear of the Lord (Aspect #1) that is dread based on a right fear of God's judgment for sinners contrasted with (Aspect #2) a fear of the Lord that is closer to a marveling love for Yahweh. Concerning dependence, the fear of the Lord is realizing that we are helpless, hopeless, ignorant about what we should do, and guilty apart from Christ. This is certainly illustrated well in 2 Chronicles 20:12. This sets us up to marvel that the Lord knows and loves us. Especially marveling at the Lord's power working in our helpless and hopeless situation in a way that brings glory to Him alone. This goes beyond the normal definition often given based on reverential awe. Yet, allows (Aspect #2) fear to continue into eternity for saints' marveling love for God's glory and His love for us, while saints set aside (aspect #1) when coming to a knowledge of Christ since there is no need for saints to dread God's judgment for our sin. Further, sinners experiencing the dread of God's judgment in hell will continue in that aspect of fear too.
