For anyone learning a new language and getting frustrated by what you see as a lack of progress: I was in Paris before the pandemic shut everything down. Hung out with a French friend, went to a party where I listened to her have a conversation in French with two other people. I didn’t catch everything they said but I *understood* enough to know they were talking business and she was giving them advice. They kept turning to me to apologize about not including me but I was more than happy listening in and realizing I understood more than I thought I would. Understanding is the first step! Keep going in whatever endeavor you’re taking on.

I've always thought the most important part in learning a language (or anything really) is actually taking the first step. It doesn't have to be boring or technical, once you have a small basis it gets a lot more fun, cause language is always cultural and once you get to that, there is no stopping the learning process. Loved this video!

I LOVE your approach. It basically translates to learning about something 'bottom-up' rather than 'top-down' and, 'just-in-time-learning' when it comes to grammar and things like that. That is totally how I think we should approach learning anything!

Hey Nathaniel. I have just watched part 1 of your endeavour to learn Portuguese and, as an ESL teacher and Brazilian Portuguese native, I have to say that it made my day to hear what you have to say for different reasons. Firstly, I see that your main message here is how to learn a foreign language, and I have to say that the way you do it is quite interesting. For me, it seems like it can be a very efficient way to learn a language, although I also have to say that it seems like you put a lot of effort into it, which is great, but not something that everyone language learner is willing to do. Adults students, in particular, are usually quite busy with their lives, so from experience, I would not expect that many people trying something like that. I was wondering if you could add to your suggestions something like breaking down your study periods into 25 minutes blocks (Pomodoro technique) and have breaks in between. Apart from that, all your ideas seem great! What I would like to stress, however, is how positive your message is, in my opinion. After working with language acquisition for so many years, it is my impression that our mindset plays a pivotal role in terms of how effectively we can learn a language. Your video provides an interesting view on how to encourage people to define their motivations to learn a language, and at the same time offer a realistic, data-based method for learning a language that seems to really work. Thank you so much for making this video. I hope you do not mind sharing them with my students :) .

One tip for you Nathaniel: When you can, get the first plane to Brazil and start making videos. Your brain will explode with our culture and your channel will stantly get a ton of more views (cause we love people talking about brazil, yeah we are that childish hahaahha)

So awesome! I've been learning langiuages like this for years, everytime I travel to a country I learn what I call "the basics" which is, more or less, same as you explain here. And I always make spreadsheets and watch tv shows or films in the language, even if I don't understand, just to get the pronunciaton and entonation of it. It is so cool that you made a video on it. The podcast you mentioned (Mamilos) is very popular here in Brasil. The name references an old local meme where a kid said "nipples are polemic!", due to women nipples being censored on social media. Soooo, the podcast covers very controversial topics in Brazilian society :D Big fan from Brasil!

I can't prove it, it's just a theory I have, and perhaps it's a function of being part of a generation that was in high school just before the internet arrived, but . . . I think the fact that you start out writing lists *by hand* is really important. There is something about the physical activity of writing out words that I have found to be a profound aid to memory. I think there's a neural connection being made there that makes retention and retrieval easier later on. My experience-I started to learn my first foreign language in high school (Spanish). Everything written out by hand. Didn't have laptops or use computers except to type papers sometimes. Though I didn't use the language for decades, I still retain a lot of what I learned and a great deal of vocab-which is sometimes comically frustrating when speaking Italian and a Spanish word pops out instead. Fast forward to the last ten years or so (the decade of my 40s) in which I studied numerous languages, especially Italian. I'm essentially fluent now in italian, but I still find myself looking up the same words over and over, and my grammar isn't as developed as it could be. And no, it's not because I'm older now. I'm of sound mind. I think the main difference is that I used software and apps to study Italian/French/Dutch/Croatian, etc. Just tapping a screen or a keyboard isn't creating those neural connections the way writing did. I've gone back to that method. Time will tell if I start to retain things better.

As a Brazilian, I feel so humbled that you took the time to learn our language. As a language learner myself, I always keep thinking about how foreigners would learn Portuguese, and the amount of ambiguities that our language has. For instance, some years ago, the "trema" (umlaut) was abolished, and so it became frustratingly hard to know when "gue/que" is pronounced as in "guerra (guerra)" or as in "pinguim (pingüim)"... so yeah, sorry about that; I myself only learned to appreciate it when I learned Spanish and saw why it even existed in the first place. Also, I really feel like Portuguese is one of the hardest languages to really appear as a native while speaking it. Maybe it's because people usually just try to be cool and use a lot of slangs (if unsure, use them sparingly!); I don't know. Maybe I'm just guilty of it being my mother-language! Anyway, there is a lot of great things in Portuguese: there are many video-essay channels popping up these days (Mimimidias, Quebrando a Caixa, Ludoviajante, just to name a few), many great bands (classics like Legião Urbana, Titãs, etc etc the list goes on), novelas (not really a fan, but Avenida Brasil is the greatest novela, fkn fight me), and so on and so forth. We usually don't give it all much value, but I personally put much of it in perspective after beginning to learn other languages (God, I just want some good German/Italian video-essay channels to follow!). But I digress :D

"Why" is actually written "por que", separated, and "because" is written "porque", together. There are actually four written variations of that word that mean different things. It's not that important, most people don't care and will understand you no matter what, but I wanted you to know.

I have a feeling that this video may go viral here in Brazil, it's a part of our culture to behave positively when we talk/see foreigners trying to speak Portuguese (sometimes it's a little overwhelming 🤣). Wish you good luck in your journey dude. I'm learning Spanish right now and what I realized is that we, as Portuguese speakers, can understand what Spanish speakers say, but they can't understand us most of the time, so I suppose that we mess the pronunciation up 100% haha. I will DEFINITELY incorporate these ideas and resources into my current approach (first Pimsleur, to get used to the sound of the language, and Duolinguo to help learn some vocabulary and grammar in a fun way). I am currently learning Russian and Ukrainian...similar in some ways, but quite different!!

There's a MEME in Brazil where a guy say "Mamilos são polêmicos" that means "nipples are controversial " - Thats why the podcast have this name(Nipples) because they talk about controversial subjects. Beijo do Brasil kkkkk

I was impress to see that "ser" and "estar" were on top of your list! Amazing work. However you might notice you wrote "to be" in both of what they mean and they are not the same at all. "Ser" is a permanent condition, fix, immutable. "Estar" is a condition that is temporary and can be changed. For example, you are beautiful. "Tu és bonito". "Tu estás bonito" which basically translation into the difference of being naturally beautiful and the effort to be beautiful. I know that English and french don't have that difference. Good job spotting those two verbs!

I just finished reading a book called "Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes" by Daniel Everett. He is a linguistic anthropologist who has done much of his work in the amazon with the Pirahá tribe. He learned how to speak Pirahá and Portuguese while expressing the importance of respecting and learning different languages.

Thanks for this mind opening video! I love languages and talking with people in their native tongue, even if it just a sentence or two. I've studied 15 languages (more or less) and always found the learning part to be so boring and tedious. And that might be the reason I can speak only 4 out of those 15 well enough, plus my mother tongue. I'm intrigued by your way of learning a new language and am definitely going to give it go!
