I'd like to add something important: clean the transmission oil cooler exterior. On E39s it especially likes to get clogged up and the overheating caused is often the end of that transmission. And if you do longer drives on snow, put it in manual mode so that the torque converter locks up. Otherwise the transmission keeps slipping and heating up, and if there's snow buildup on the front of your car it again blocks the air intake to the cooler -> overheated transmission and potential failure.

I have a 2011 BMW E90 with Xdrive. Been watching your videos and got the same exact ATF fluid. I drained the old fluid, it was thin like water, smelt burnt and black. I replaced the Filter and gaskets, topped off with the Valvoline Max Life at 132k. After doing that it shifts alot smoother, it used to have a hard time shifting from 3rd gear and it fixed that. It's at 140k now and drives strong. Thanks Nate for your videos and advice. I've learned alot watching and listening to you.

Do the white paper towel test against the same new fluid being used. Discoloration is a direct correlation to wear on the fluid. To prevent increasing ATF to breakdown temperature, consider adding an auxiliary ATF to your car. This should not be confused with in radiator heat exchangers which are there to raise cold ATF to operating temperature but do not cool it.
@dogsplantscarsneatstuff1763 жыл бұрын
For most of us the problem is how big the trans cooler should be. I usually try to the largest I can fit in front of the radiator. Seems like most auto trans. rebuilders recommend the coolers also.

Hi Nathan; one point, some years ago I had some trouble with my Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ's auto box, the local auto-box specialist told me to have the fluid changed (hot) as well as the filter, then drive it for half an hour and then change fluid ad filter again; this was because at least 25% of old fluid remains in the torque converter when first drained. Had this done and never had a problem after that, though I always drove reasonably sensibly anyway. Do you agree ?? And Stay Safe everyone !!!!!!!!!
@machtschnell74523 жыл бұрын
Takes about 4 or 5 drain and refills to get to 95% new fluid. On a drain and fill, more than 60% old contaminated ATF remains. A lot better to do a complete mechanical fluid exchange after changing filter and gaskets. ZF recommends about 50K miles while BMW insists it is a lifetime fill.

A lot of people (including Redline (highly respected company in the BMW world)) recommend using Redline D4 ATF (check your year and model to be sure). Even though it is an ATF it is designed/works in many BMW MT. Especially in severe cold weather climates. www.bimmerworld.com/Fluids/Driveline-Fluids/Red-Line-D4-ATF-Quart.html If in a severely hot climate or track use, probably best to go with a “thicker” MT fluid. I used Amsoil MT fluid in my sons 08 328i, we live in a warmer climate with very mild winters. Did need a small hand pump to fill, due to the position of the fill hole. @@MegaSuperMiracle you have to check the sticker on your transmission. I had a customer fill in another fluid an it ruined the transmission. It started making noises. I saw it on the color that it was the wrong fluid. I always get the MTF fluid at BMW only for the reason they'll will sell you the exact amount you need. the trans fills everywhere with pressurised fluid in 2/3 seconds,you dont need to wait for the fluid to get everywhere ,I agree beating on it cold is bad for engine/trans diff etc,but I did enough transmission testing/development with all autos bench testing valve bodies on our own developed test rigs with a matching pump volume its near instantly filled, the pump flows and creates pressure so quickly that some myths still float around and waiting for the trans to 'fill up' is one of many ,when the inhibitor switch dies and it starts when in drive or reverse it drives/moves instantly you don't get a delay and time to shut it off it drives off the ramp

@@NathansBMWWorkshop as I said it will move either forward or reverse,it wont damage anything internally due to fluid not being circulated ,like an imaginary huge air pocket that needs time to fill up? ,at 1k rpms cold start idle speed the fluid is instantly drawn up,as the engine cranks over it is being drawn up at just 250 rpms,so if there are no faults and full to max fluid level it will just move and spin its tyres if you stood on it, low fluid level and other internal faults may well cause a delay to engagement and it moving

Hi vviper, I watch Nathan's videos regardless of the headings, to support him. He has saved me hundreds of dollars, possibly thousands. Arguably, this video is reasonably titled - if we don't look after an auto by keeping the fluid clean and taking it easy on power inputs when the box is cold, it will fail by destroying the internals and it will cost. Ultimately its a business Nathan is running, and, he is obligated by the way the platform works to make a lot of content and the headings as attractive as possible.
