What are the rules of golf on the tee box?
I met up with PGA Rules Professional David Rishworth to find out. We look at when a ball is in the teeing area, what happens if you hit from the wrong tee as well as looking at reteeing options after a poor tee shot.

The last note was really interesting. I caddied when I was younger and had a player drive the ball directly into the tee marker and it ricochet directly back and plugged behind the marker. Based on what I think I heard he could have tee'd the ball back up w/ no counted stroke? That's funny

Nice vid Hannah. Does the 2 club lengths allowed have to be the club you intend to use for the tee shot (on a par three for example) or is driver ok for any hole ? Also does the headcover have to be removed when measuring ?

I believe it is the club you are using. Can keep headcover on as long as you don’t use it as measurement it has to just be the length of the driver

The USGA rules don't specify what club so I assume you can use any club just like when taking relief (always use driver to maximize relief). It wouldn't make sense to have to be the club you're using on the tee - what if the wind changes and you change clubs - does the size of the teeing area now change? I would expect R&A and USGA are the same on this.

Hannah In stroke play say I tee off the wrong tee block and realise my error or my mates tell me, do I get a shot penalty when I tee off again on correct tee?

Yes it is a two shot penalty

Years ago my club held a series of study sessions on the rules. At the end we were given a test and, if we got the answers correct we became accredited rules officials. Do you have something similar in the UK? Surprisingly, we only got about 5 members to come along and, if memory serves, 3 were accredited.

If you play from the wrong tee box or outside the tee area but you do rectify it before the next hole. Is it still a 2 shot penalty? (And match disqualified if not rectified at all)

@@hannahholdenNCG thanks. I’ve heard of situations where somebody has been confused by a sand box thinking it’s the tee area when it’s the other side of the marker. And opponents have kept their mouth shut! I’d always say something. No point winning a match from that rule!?

Not sure about the very last point of you intend to hit the ball and duff it if it remains in the tee area that’s still a shot isn’t it?

It is still a shot but you can tee it up before you hit your next shot

You would be hitting 2 from the tee box after duffing the ball and teeing it up again!

I am a bit confused. Surely I can tee off from inside the left-hand tee marker (as a right-hander) rather than just two club lengths from the right-hand side marker? I have NEVER seen that you only have two club-lengths from the right (for right-handers) or left (for left-handers) tee markers. If this is true, I’ve lost every match I’ve ever played……

It's both tee markers not just one side. Basically you have a rectangle from outside of markers and 2 club lengths back .

I was confused at first as well - the tee marker in the background during the first example is from a different set of tees (yellow). Hannah would be hitting towards the camera from the red tees (the other red tee marker is out of shot to the left). Pause the video at 0:40 to check. It would have been clearer if they'd set up on a tee box where the yellow tees weren't in the camera frame.

Honestly that TaylorMade logo is very annoying to see. Don’t get me wrong because I love TaylorMade but I don’t think having that logo in the video is necessary even if you’re sponsored.

Sponsorships require visibility. Absolutely "par for the course" to see such logos on YT videos. It's not like the logo is bright pink and flashing. Hannah knows what she is doing.
