ABOUT ME:
I’m Liam Harrison, Bolton born and bred. I’m a lover of Golf, life and laughter.
Started Golf 12 years ago after packing in football when i was 28 due to a back injury.
I started the KZfaq channel as a laugh and a Wim, to make me practice but that went out the window as i started vlogging, loving being on camera but more so the interaction with my #golfmates.
In 14 months i have seen the channel evolve and become the only real golf community on KZfaq which i am extremly proud of.
I would like to thank all the #golfmates that have been with us and supported us and the channel from the start. Also not forgetting our new #golfmates that may have only just come across the channel.

When I play a course that I have never played before, I look at the longest par 4 and subtract 230 from the tees until I'm at 150 yards or under .that's the tees we play. Don't beat yourself up!

I'm 68 and I have seen my handicap climb from a 7 in my prime to a 12 now from the white tees on my course. So this is the first year I have moved up to the "senior" gold tees. Still very much a stigma to it, but it now allows me to hit the same clubs on my 2nd shots that I did when I was a 7. My handicap from the gold tees is presently an 11, but I think with some play I can get it back down to a 9 or 10 and not beat myself up. It's hard from the blue or white tees when you only hit your drive around 220, when you used to hit it 260+. I think I need a swing like OMP. He looks really good.

It's tough to admit you can't hit it as far as you used to. I often play with my Dad and one of his friends, who hit 200 or less off the tee. They insist playing the white tees which is the same as I do. I can usually out drive them by 30-40yds. I'm not a long hitter by any means but the course we normally play there are a couple of par 4s they can't reach in regulation. If they played the forward tees they would at least have a shot at those greens in regulation. I mean there is one par 3 they often hit driver from the tee because it usually plays 190+ from the whites. Nobody should have to hit driver on a par 3.

Liam-first as you state this course is GORGEOUS!!!! Second, agree completely about golf being fun and playing from the proper tees. One of my favorite things is to watch the swings on the first tee of other players and which tee they play from. The course is reasonably long but very challenging. Most play from the incorrect tee as many should be playing from the most forward tee, not even the White tee as its too hard. When I see players at the tips, I’ll watch and mostly chuckle when I see 3 tee balls in the crap to begin! We are all playing for FUN-no one is going to make whatever tour. Put the ego aside as golf is hard enough. THX for all the great content! Brian

My Club has 5 tee boxes, play off the next to longest, 6800 most of the time. But 20% or so of the time, we mix the tees up (Per Hole) making a Some par 4s reachable, Shorter par 3s, longer par 5's. I think this format is not only fun, but also improves your game facing different bunkers, water hazards into play, and forcing you to use course management and improves your shot making as well, as you encounter different yardages and lies.

I personally like to play from the tips when i play by myself. I also have an avg. drive of 280-290, good day 300+ handicap 5, but when i play with my friends who do not hit the ball as i do we play from closer tees. when i play myself and i get paired up with someone, I just play from where they feel comfortable. it should be enjoyable for everyone out playing. It baffles me to see guys play from the tips when they cant drive it past 220 or they have massive hooks or slices and they just struggle all day long and slow play tremendously. they get frustrated with the game and throw tantrums. then it just makes it miserable for everyone else around as well. thank you for your videos. I think you're totally right; however, I think that courses guiding you to a specific tee box based off you're handicap shouldn't be done so much. For example, I'm 21 and a bogey golfer, but I hit the ball quite a bit longer than most bogey golfers. My driver distance is about 270, so it's other areas of my game that increase my score. But some courses will tell you that if you're bogey or worse, you should play the front tees. If I did that, par 5s would turn into par 4s that I'm hitting shorter irons or even a wedge into on my second shot (assuming I hit the fairway). I usually play the middle tees because of this. I don't want all the par 3s to be half swing pitching wedge when they're all inside 130 yards. But I won't play the tips (unless I know the round will be really slow) just because I can hit the ball far enough either, because I get a decent amount of mishits and I'd like to hit at least a third of the greens in regulation. I think it's kind of a mix between your handicap and how far you hit the ball.
@compa4929
@compa4929 4 жыл бұрын
I agree tee selection should be more about driving distance than handicap. My Dad is about an 18 but can only hit about 200 max. Avg is probably more like 190. So any par 4 that is 400+ he can't reach in regulation normally. So he is loosing a shot on those holes from the beginning.

Greetings from America. My daughter is on the JV golf team at her high school and I’m a beginner (again) afternoon a 20 year break. We settle on the forward (red) or gold (second back) at most of the local courses depending on how challenging. I like the rule of figuring out the tees from reaching a green in 2 on a par 4 (if you do 2 good shots for your level of play) to pick what set to play for the round. My worry is what to do next year when she starts playing off the whites! By the way, in the 20 years that I stopped playing, the terms men’s and women’s tees had largely disappeared. From Akron, Ohio.

Let them play from the tips. You play from your tees. Everyone is happy. Most people who play recreational golf from the tips are either very good (rare) or are stuck in some sort of denial loop. A good golfer would not be party to penalizing you for your game. A fragile ego type might get into a snit, but those types aren't fun to play with anyway.

@@Thursdaym2 I am a high handicap I've played almost 2 years. My best score is a 92. I struggle with 5 iron and 4 iron. Which are usually clubs that high handicap players will struggle with. I am inconsistent with creating the club head speed needed to get the ball to reach the distances there supposed to. As far as fairway woods go I hit them ok but not nearly as well as my 7 or 8. You got to realize that not everybody are mid handicap players.

This is certainly one area that sets golf apart from other sports. Giving enjoyment to all skill levels. Liam, this is an excellent video. In addition to matching tee boxes to your skill, many courses here in the USA are putting what they call HYBRID tees on the card. In other words, if many of the back tees too difficult but forward tees a bit too easy, they have started adding hybrid tees (on the scorecard) where you would play blue tee on one hole and then could be a white tee on the next hole.

Excellent advice. I don't play enough to be much good, and I play with much better players than me. Now I could play stapleford, but frankly I'm not interested in 'winning' when I play more shots than them, it's nonsense. So I just play my own game, knowing I'm going to get beaten but occasionally I'll win on a hole. If I'm playing badly (which I usually am) I just stop scoring because it's demoralising. You have to decide why you're playing, and for me it's the joy of the good shots, a nice walk and some cheeky banter. Getting stressed or upset about a rubbish score is madness in my opinion. Why play a new hole with a long face because the last one was awful? You ought to be able to enjoy every shot, and that's the biggest challenge in golf. Forget the score if you aren't any good, just enjoy the golf. Just my take on it, but I love every game, even though I never win.

Heres what I was always told Use Average 5-Iron Distance Here's a guideline for choosing the distance at which to play a golf course: Take your average 5-iron distance (be honest!), multiply by 36, and choose the tees that most closely match that yardage. Example: You hit your 5-iron 150 yards. So 150 times 36 equals 5,400. Choose the tees closest to 5,400 yards in length. If you hit your 5-iron 180 yards, then look for tees around 6,500 yards (180 times 36 equals 6,480).

I couldn't agree more. My club in Italy has a championship course which is quite quite long. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. 7 tees. 2 pros, 3 mens and 2 women. The pro tees are so long that the pros won't play them! The men's tee that everyone plays from are the yellows. However, only single digit handicappers should play them. From the yellow tees, most of the par fours are unreachable even for a good golfer. That means they are 3 shot holes and really par 5's. I play the green tees. Still a challenge, still long but much more fun. Two years ago I shot the best round of my life. 7 birdies for a 65. Fun. If I had played the yellow tees, the score would have probably been near 80. Not fun. Play the tees that you are capable of playing, particularly on these ridiculously long modern courses. FYI, I hit drives in the 250 range so not a short short hitter.

In portugal in February on our last day we all played from different tees, hc 2 to 10 from back tees, 11 to 18 next tees, 19 above next tees, ladies red. However in Myrte Beach in May the Ladies played of second tees, men played next tees up. This was because the red tees in MB are very short and makes the course and holes much shorter. They also change the look of the holes and what looks beautiful from the next tees look rubbish from the reds. So ladies played tees around 5500 and men 6200. I no longer refer to red tees as Ladies they are just forward tees. Why make life more difficult for yourself. Enjoy the game that is what it's all about. On the last day at TPC MB we moved forward a tee and ladies played of red and men of yellow, which was much better for everyone. Better scores coming in and lots more happy golfers. Did I mention I got 40 pts here and won!!

This video is a perfect indicator of how golf can send you mad!! My golf course is a classic example of golf breaking your heart or being the best day out ever. We have blue tees 5678 yards made for pure enjoyment for high handicap golfers. Yellows, 6200 for daily use whites 6400 not a prayer its not just the length but like in the video anything short say of the tee and you are feeding the fishes.

Great video Liam. I was once told that to find your perfect length course, plus the right tee to play off to give you a challenge and to stay competitive off of your handicap, You should measure your average Driver Distance off of the tee (being honest with yourself!!!) and multiply it by 27. I average 240 yds off of the tee with my Driver. That gives me a course yardage of 6,480 yards long.

That's all very well but what if your playing partners all hit it massively different distances off the tee. A four ball all playing from different tee boxes. Absolute carnage!!!

I played off the back tees about a month ago with one of the pro's and a couple of his mates who were low handicap, although it was a challenge for me it wasn't as enjoyable. I agree that you should put your ego aside and play from tees that will make your round more enjoyable, it will still be enough of a challenge.

We have White tees for comps. Yellow for general play and Green for winter. Sometimes the Saturday Banter Boys play off the whites for a change. The yardage on each hole is marginal on each hole but as some of the Tees are off set you need to manage the ball a little more

Regardless of what other people might think front tee back tee who cares...we’re all friends#golfmates..for the better golfers out there it’s a great challenge fair play rise to it..personally I wouldn’t play a course like that purely because I’m not good enough at the minute only been playing for just over a year...I know I’m never gona be a pro I expect that but I’d like to have a bit of confidence and consistency to my game and with the help of the #golfmates and golfvolgs uk that will happen!!keep up the good works guys love the videos!!👍

It all depends on a realistic assessment of my abilities. I try to play from the tees that give me a chance at par. I also try to heed the advice of OMP and play the shot that I CAN make rather than the one I MIGHT make.

Great point Liam, shame you didn't play 1 ball off the back tee then one off the front one. Played the hole with both balls and see what you scored with each ball Great point though mate👍⛳

Reading some comments, I thought that the USA the R&A and us SAGU are now on one common system. We are red blue white and yellow. Your handicap is calculated from which ever tee you play of on the day. That’s the slope system which I think America has had for some time.

What does chicken tonight mean or McKenzie Liam? It's a different language for me 😂 golf is more than 90% played between the ears, all depends on your mental state at the time, some holes will fit well other's will be tougher, that's why it's the greatest game ever played 👍 Btw you made a few good swings near the end 💪

I've always thought they should label tees by driving distance instead of "seniors", "ladies", "players", etc. Too much stigma.
@reillywalker195

Just labelling the tees by colour would be sufficient. Golfers can pick which tees to play from based on how they feel about the yardages of each hole and any forced carries there might be. The same golfer might play from different tees depending on which clubs they're using, too, such as a short set or a hickory set.

Liam, what irons are you using? I used to get 15 yds difference in carry when I was using regular shaft 2013 mizuno jpx ez game improvement clubs. I've switched to the mp25 with x-stiff 130g shafts. Only reason I mention that is now my carry on normal to good hits is really consistent. I no longer have those 190 yd 6 irons out of nowhere. I do believe the golfer is the one who controls how good the shot is and not the clubs but in my own experience the switch has cut down the huge differences in carry distance. P.S. Going over greens on a good strike that you don't expect is usually not good :-) Thanks...

I've never understood this obsession of some golfers to only play on White tees or whatever is the most macho of the spectrum. Courses have their Course handicap and a player's handicap adjusts to the rating of the tees they play on. Let's take a male 18 handicapper on my home course. Whites: 23 strokes. Yellows: 18 strokes. Blues: 15 stokes. Reds: 11 strokes. Playing from different tee boxes changes the course and the way you have to play it (at least on my home course) and I tend to do it now and then. I don't mind playing on the ladies' tees... apart than loosing seven strokes of course. But that actually makes it more of a challenge from time to time. Changing it up makes the course go from 4514 m / 4937 yds from the reds up to 6035 m / 6600 yds from the whites. So be brave, tee off from a different tee box than you're used to doing... tackle the abuse from the mates with a shrug... "Life is Life"

Liam the guys are play with here in Michigan chose a distance for 18 holes and play the color (American) closest to the distance but you can play it forward and your handicap changes with the sloop.

I agree wholeheartedly Liam. Some Club competitions where I play from the whites , I am competing against some who play from the yellows. It’s a handicap thing. But when there is 60 yds difference between the tees it makes it bloody difficult to compete. I’m beaten before I start, taking a driver off the tee for a par three is a joke!

I pitch up to courses alone quite a bit and get paired up with quite a variety of players. One big frustration is when a couple 20+ handicappers want to play the tips on tough courses - we spend 5 hours looking for their balls in the trees/rough/lake instead of just playing a round of golf in 4 hours..... Wrong tees = slow play, clogging up the course for everyone. Handicap of 6 or less, tips, 7-12, blues, 13+ whites, beginner, ladies. That will help everyone have fun on the course!
