Deciding on wheels and tires for your newly acquired Subaru Outback Wilderness? I, too, was in that same boat and looking for that perfect setup that added a little bit of pop to the vehicle and pushed those tires out a bit without having to install a set of wheel spacers. Although these wheels don't match the vehicle's bronze color the way I would like them to, the stance is unbeatable, and the aggressive look gave me exactly what I was searching for.

I can't get over how much better it looks with the beefier tires (poking out)! We just bought a 2024 Forester Wilderness in the Crystal black silica and I absolutely love the car! Think it would look better with something besides the Geolanders. Love your Subaru Outback and all of your content!😊

As An Engineer, offset wheels is always better than adding another element like a spacer. Spacers can increase the runout on the wheel mounting surface and accelerate bearing wear.
@messmeister92
@messmeister92 7 ай бұрын
So can offset though. Say your OEM wheel is 7.5” + 55, and you want more poke. So you get a 7.5 wheel with +35 offset. That’s the exact same thing as adding a 20mm spacer. The key is making sure that the back side of the wheel is as close to OEM placement as possible.

I love the way it looks. I have a 2022 Ice Silver OBW... and I really like the color... but I think it's too cool of a color to work with bronze wheels (which is a shame - I really like bronze wheels). So I went with the ubiquitous Method MR502 in black (with a +38 offset... with 15mm spacers). I love the stance, but I had to stick w/ 245 width tires because the 265s rubbed. So. Hard. Maybe I'll try the heat gun approach when these tires need to be replaced. Thanks for the info!

I have 17x7.5 LP1s with +35mm offset as well, with OEM hub bores (hubcentric). The factory wheels have a +48mm offset. For people who aren't sure how much farther away from the engine the wheels (like mine) will look: 48mm - 35mm = 13mm So, the higher the positive offset number, the closer the wheels are to the engine. +35mm offset pushes the wheels 13mm farther away from the engine than the +48mm offset OEM wheels.

Wheels look great. Congrats. A few comments regarding the Outback specifically. It has an independent suspension, so the biggest issue is the suspension travel. When a wheel lifts, it will not lift the whole body, at least only a limited way. A bigger diameter wheel will not have the same effect as on a solid axel vehicle. The gains will be minimum and might be a too big compromise regarding ride quality, acceleration, fuel economy, etc. The second issue is the way the transmission works specifically in a Subaru. Up to 15 mph or 24 km/h, there is no lock-up in the torque converter. That means, at low speed, in more difficult situations you will never have the full torque to the wheel, even if the turbo is quite capable. If you have a lot of unsprang mass, makes a not ideal situation worse. I would go for a taller tire, but trying to keep the mass as low as possible, for ex keeping the same width but increasing the sidewall ratio. The most effective way would probably get just by raising the car and also mounting thinner front and back stabilizer bars, this will allow more droop and also for the wheel to raise higher when need it. Probably not available, but something like from a Impreza might fit. There are some folks who removed the rear stabilizing bar completely on Outbacks. The effects are amazing. Probably it would do more for off road performance than a 2 inch lift. After doing this, of course, changing a lane , at a 80mph on a highway needs some caution, you need to be very smooth. Also negotiating some windy roads, you need to adjust your speed and be a lot more careful . There is always some price to pay. On a Jeep Wrangler, or even something that has at least the rear as a solid axle, like an FJ cruiser, they have low gearing, conventional gearboxes, things are a lot easier. Some of this I discussed with a couple of automotive engineers that I know. Suspension geometry is a complicated thing, and a lot money goes into researching it. And many aftermarket companies don't have this kind of budget, specially if it is not a model where they have a ton of sales.

Would you provide some links to additional info on this low speed torque converter slippage in Subarus you are describing? This is the first I've heard of it, but it would explain a lot of experiences people have while trying to crawl up steep hills.

@leeloo21231234 6 ай бұрын
@@esthes kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5p9fJRqptLQcmQ.html there is this guy that explains a bit and has as source Subaru Canada. . Things are a bit more complicated, the idea is at crawl speed, something happens with the subaru programing, there is some speculation, maybe it is related to the temp, or to protect the chain, but something is going on that limits the torque sent to the wheels at very low speed for sure. When you have and issue with low torque, having an increase in unsprung mass, does not help. (aka wider and taller tires much heavier, like some 10 ply aggressive mud ones ) . What works on a jeep/pick up with low transfer gearing, solid axels and plenty of torque does not translate to a Subaru. My path would be lift, not exaggerated , keep the stock size wheel, maybe lower weight tire/rim combo, as close to stock as possible, thinner stabilizer bars, what ever helps flex. The nice thing is you get to keep most of the very good highway drivability and fuel economy. Of course, no solution is perfect for all. Each solution has some advantages and some cons.

A less positive offset equals a more negative offset. On this vehicle you can't really go past a +25 offset due to rubbing which is less positive then the factory +38 offset. So you will need a lower positive number to create a wider stance.
