In this scenario they would have had no choice but to de-escalate, giving legitimate reason for external forces to be alongside Russian forces without a war footing to watch over them.

Ukraine can take a lot of that blame on itself as well. Just look at its history since the collapse of the USSR, the corruption, playing Russia off on the west and vice versa to get what it wanted for its Elites who've robbed the country blind for over 30 years. Especially, its former President Kuchma and his Oligarch son in law Viktor Pinchuk, who by the way has the Pinchuk foundation (a whitewashing organization)who's attendees have included Bill Clinton, Niall Ferguson, Kissinger, Tony Blair and a whole host of other prominent westerners in an attempt to cleanse the reputations of these 2 scoundrels.
