🍴🇩🇰🇪🇪🇬🇧🍴 Five NATO troops from Denmark, Estonia and the United Kingdom compare ration packs.
Commonly referred to as ‘Meals Ready-to-Eat’ or MREs, each NATO Ally has its own unique approach to fuelling their soldiers when deployed. While the UK packs include tea and flapjacks, Danish soldiers are given tightly sealed packs of mackerel fish.
Footage of soldiers sitting in a controlled environment eating hot and cold rations while discussing the merits and drawbacks of each other’s food. It was filmed at NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup in Tapa, Estonia (before the COVID-19 pandemic).

in 1995, when I served in the Estonian Defense Force Army we were issued excellent quality canned meats. An MRE was just a dream for the future which is now here and from what I hear the Estonian MRE's are considered some of the best out there.

So in 1995 thru didn't issue rations? Only some cans of food? The Estonian ration isn't bad but there's some really good rations out there now. I'd put it around top 10-15 somewhere in that range. I've tried dozens of countries. I'll tell you a really good one you should try if you can get one. That's a Polish 24hr. The single meals are good to but the 24hr is best.

A Brit that doesn't eat fish? WTH? Also, Tobasco has a long history in military rations. The son of the owner of the sauce company fought in Vietnam, and thought the food was so bland, when he got back, the company started sending it to soldiers in the field. Eventually, it was made a standard seasoning in US rations.

@@miketaylor5212 The British ration packs of my day had an international flavour to them. There was always a curry to be had. Who can forget the oatmeal blocks - still salivate thinking about them. The Irish stew - just a little pepper and you have a feast fit for a king. Times and tastes move on however. I wonder if what I had even features in a modern British Army ration pack. That wuss with the fish - clearly not been in the army long enough to be hungry enough to eat his own boots with some of that Tabasco on them! Rations, of course, could always be supplement with what can be caught in the wild. Fresh roasted Iguana, snake or Coypu in Central America, Cicada roasted and then slowly heated with fresh picked passion fruit pulped in Malaysia (Would not have dreamed of it if an Aboriginal tribal head hunters nad not intro'd us to it) are pleasant memories of a more active past but if there were a restaurant serving it, I'd be a regular customer.

American. I can understand the desire to have something different. I would be curious myself if I was a Soldier/Marine. Alas, I survived on being a US Sailor stealing the US Marine's MREs. A lot more spices and less rot flavor. Any USN Mess cook on a ship denying about spice, was only using Ketchup for their "tomato" spice. I had KP(food service) duty too. I know their tricks... I remember just having some green canned food and crackers. I don't remember it being tasty but you make do when you are young and hungry. I think I can remember some comments about the cans being WWII vintage. Things have surely changed since the 70s!

I was a reservist in the Australian Army back in the 1980s. Back then, the ration packs were dreadful: Salty, fatty SPAM in a can, biscuits you practically needed a bayonet to break, some kind of electrolyte drink that tasted like the terminals of a Duracell battery, sickly sweet tubes of condensed milk. I will say the hexamine stoves were robust and good. You could live off the Australian packs, but they were nowhere near as appealing as the MREs I see issued to NATO troops these days. Today's NATO rations could get a Michelin rating compared to the Australian rations of the 80s.
