@@tonyoverstill7587 NBK is the tip of the iceberg of what I’ve seen this dude be late to the party on. He seems to collect for the dopamine hit and the channel, rather than for a life long love of films. Yet, I still watch lol. I have always loved hearing others opinions on films. But I don’t understand some of these people who collect the movies for any other reason than loving the actual film. Not the box, the FOMO, how it looks on the shelf, etc.

For anyone that has watched this movie at least a few times, understand exactly what it is, and what they are about to participate (the viewing of) in, this 4k was done extremely well, they gave it the proper love and care it needed, and it has never looked better, details never seen before, clarity that makes this actually stand out .. thank you shout factory for giving us an amazing piece of artwork, well done 👏

I think part of it is you missed the start of the tabloid TV generation. For example the insanity of the OJ Bronco speed limit chase live on TV. That’s what Downey’s character is sending up and that is lost. This is definitely a movie that a certain generation will see diffidently than later ones.

I saw it in the theater when it came out. Got the Director’s Cut 2-tape VHS set, then the Director’s Cut DVD, then later the theatrical cut DVD. For those of us who like the movie and especially the soundtrack, this is worth getting to hear Nine Inch Nails’ “Burn” in the last scene before the end credits roll, instead of the alternate music. In fact, I’ve never heard it in the Director’s Cut! It’s also worth it for me since I never upgraded to the blu-rays, and the Director’s Cut DVD is only 4:3 letterboxed.

I have to respectfully and wholly completely disagree with the review. I first saw this film when I believe I was in 8th grade and absolutely loved it then and it's been in my top 5 of all time ever since. The editing choices and ugly cinematography are supposed to bring the viewer into the psychosis of the antagonists, Mickey and Mallory. The film feels psychotic bc the two stars ARE psychotic. Oliver Stone said he basically just said "f**k it" with holding back and went for broke in terms of the violence factor. I know they had trouble getting this to an R rating upon release bc the tone was so dark and twisted. Anyway, I think this is the type of film that could ONLY have been released in the 90s bc only then were we open-minded and weird enough to handle it. I think the assessment would have been different if Ken had seen this years ago as a teen.

I think this movie is an absolute masterpiece. So happy with this release. I felt the same as you when I first seen this movie at 14 years old, but through countless amounts of viewing, I fell in love with it. The movie was originally written to go along with QT’s Earlier movies…especially True Romance. That’s why QT hates it. I think Oliver knocks it out the park with this script.

One of my favorite movies of all time! I remember when this movie first came out I heard people hated it and we're walking out the theater and told me how stupid it was. I know Oliver Stone does not make stupid movie so I kind of knew what to expect going into the theater. I absolutely loved it! I think your problem is not knowing what to expect before you watch it. Some of my favorite movies I did not like but God better through multiple viewings. I think you'd enjoy it more with a different mindset.

I totally get where you're coming from Ken. This is a weird film for me, because I actually respect it for the style and bold artsy choices, and think it's really well done. But at the same time, it doesn't have a whole lot of rewatch value for me. Case in point: the last time I saw this film was probably in the 90s (I've seen it a couple times). But I bought the director's cut on blu ray well over a decade ago, and I still have never watched it since owning it. I just don't ever find myself in the mood to rewatch this one. So when I heard this was coming to 4K, I knew it was an instant pass for me. I'd rather spend that money on Pumpkinhead LMAO!

Hi Ken! 👋 I think it’s one of those “you had to be there” type movies. Sort of like Pulp Fiction, when this movie came out there was nothing like it and if you’re just now watching it in 2023, it doesn’t hit the same way it did then. Both cuts are wild, but the directors cut is a lot of people’s preference. Also picked up the Steelbook because it used original promotional art

To each their own. I really loved this film when it came out. I probably watched my laserdisc once a week. Though a lot of people, especially at the time, loved the film for the wrong reasons and it almost became a parody of itself just because of the reaction. I hadn't seen it in years but picked up the 4k steellbook and it's stood up to the test of time for me. I probably won't watch it as often as did back in the day, but it's definitely worth owning in 4k for me.

The secret to understanding NBK is that it's a big-budget Roger Corman drive-in B-movie. Oliver Stone directly says so in the commentary when the blood hits the windshield in the opening credits. That's why it's so over-the-top and cartoonishly unrealistic in it's violence and setpieces. It's intentionally trying to replicate the various low-budget styles of late 60s/early 70s exploitation/Grindhouse filmmakers most of whom cut their teeth working for Roger Corman's New World Pictures. For years I never understood this movie's reputation--yeah, it's really violent, but the violence isn't realistic at all--until I saw the commentary on Blu-ray. I like it a little better now because I was a huge movie snob in the 90s. I bought the BB exclusive steelbook because I'm a sucker for those particular steels on films I'm willing to own. Still haven't opened it yet.

He actually did do the screenplay but Oliver Stone tossed it. QT wanted his name off but his agent suggested he not do that since Stone was pretty much at his peak and it would look good to have his name attached. I saw it when it came out I liked it a lot but never thought the look was all that unique as plenty of underground films from the 60s did stuff like that even music videos but it hasn’t really stood the test of time and it seems dated now.

I like the movie myself but yeah it's not one of my favorite Oliver Stone films. Still I give him props for trying to do something different, many scenes are in black and white, shot on video, film grain to no film grain so in certain parts the 4K transfer looks stunning. I thought the pharmacy snake venom scene which was all green looked outstanding in 4K. The whole point of the movie is criminals turning into celebrities by the mainstream media, which ironically still happens today.

To me, it’s a social commentary of the times, a bit more relevant now considering that people do idolize serial killers, they get Hulu and Netflix documentaries glorifying what they did and we know how insensitive it is, but like everything we draw a blind eye to it. I wish you got to see this when it first came out, I feel you may have a better appreciation for what Oliver Stone did. I am confused to why you were mad over the stylistic choices. It’s a product of its time. Dangerfield killed it in the movie being such a scum. It was like he was channeling Joe Spinell from The Undertaker, Maniac, so on and so forth.

I was 5 - 14 in the 90s, so yeah, Power Rangers was on the rotation of what I watched. If you don't like the channel or my thoughts, there's other channels and film experts you'd probably appreciate more. Go there.

Ouch! You really missed the point of the movie. The editing is deliberate and serves the narrative. It’s more relevant now than ever.

I don't feel like I missed it. I just didn't care for it. I appreciated what it was trying to do.

I've just never really liked it. I watched it when it first came out then a few months ago. I think it's the whole psychedelic thing.

The movie is 100% shot on film. Why would it nor be worth a 4K upgrade ? All the stylistic choices still look better in 4k. The blu looks terrible by comparison

I think it's a stinker. Have watched it 3 times since it was first released, and it definitely hasn't grown on me.

I didn't care for it. I've seen it at least 20 times or more. I would force myself to sit through it when I was a kid and even liked it on occasion. But I can't in good conscience say I truly like the film. And the older I get the more I pull away from it.@@NYC_Goody
