You should do a video on recommended cages and accessories, what to avoid and look out for. I think it would help many new owners and it would ensure that they will properly care for them too.

May I say, it looks nice but to prevent quarrels among the 3,there should be more than just one possibility for the gerbils to reach the other part where the wheel is.

You should definitely get a lid they cannot access, unfortunately you can enrich your gerbils lives to the max but they’ll always be interested in escaping if there is a way to 😅

Awesome video! What was that plant the they were eating on 2:23? Maybe you could do safe and unsafe products or wood. Or a gerbil checklist for what to get. Just suggestions:) Also, is a 9 in wheel fine for gerbils?

I really need advice, I got my first and only pair of gerbils about 2 or 3 years ago. One of them was squinting a lot and not acting her self sadly I don’t have a vet in the area that helps with rodents. So I kept a close eye on her and made sure she was eating drinking extra. It seemed like she was getting better, then I found her dead in her little nest 😢. It’s been a few days and my other gerbil seems fine, happy and active. Do you think I should try and get another gerbil for her? Right now I’ve been adding things to her cage and adding more tubes and stuff. please don’t attack me for this but they have habitrail cages(they have 5 large cages with tons of stuff to keep them busy :) )
@finsandwhiskers
@finsandwhiskers 4 жыл бұрын
The only Emma considering the space is unsuitable as you know, I wouldn’t get another gerbil. 😔 Plus it will be even harder to avoid territorial disputes and could lead to some serious fighting. I really recommend getting a suitable cage, you can make a bin cage or get at the very least, a 20g tank

I saw a previous comment that you got your large tank from a pet store and I was wondering how much it cost? My mom said maybe after quarantine is over with that I could possibly get a pair of gerbils and a 55 gallon tank (whenever the $1 per gallon sale is going on) but everyone says bigger is better so I’d like to consider options!
@finsandwhiskers
@finsandwhiskers 4 жыл бұрын
It was around $30! A 55g is great for a pair 💕
@kctyphoon
@kctyphoon 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure where anyone finds a 55 gallon for $30 new in a store (maybe used on Craigslist?) - but petco i think it was , had a sale for some tanks and i got a 40 gallon breeder for $50 (normally closer to $100). There’s a bunch of different 40 gallon tanks, all with different dimensions but the same capacity. The best one i think is the 40 gallon breeder tank. It gives a larger footprint and is bigger but more proportional in length and depth. (Meaning Its neither too shallow or too long. But its wider and deeper than a 20 long. Taller too, but not too tall ). They make 40’s that are also the same depth as 20 gallon longs, but twice the length. Not very deep but very long.. i would compare length and width (depth) of a 40 gallon breeder to a 55 and see how the actual dimensions compare to prices. 40 breeder is a good sized tank for them, (its not small, trust me). but yes, OBVIOUSLY anything bigger gives them more room.. Good luck.

Claire H any 20 gallon long tank would be the bare minimum for 2! A 40 would be nice for them though. You can find tanks at any pet store for aquariums in petco or petsmart etc. You’ll want a lid as well so they don’t escape. You can use mesh or egg crate

I know people dont like metal screen wheels, but I’ve never had any issue with mine. They always liked it, none ever got hurt by it, (that I’ve ever seen) and nothing gets stuck inside the thing. A tiny drop of oil (you could even use some type or natural oil like vegetable or olive but its such a tiny amount needed you can really just use anything) and the wheel is silent. I think mine has been going for 3 years now. People have used them for decades before all this expensive plastic and wooden stuff came out. People sometimes really overthink things, and others are just trying to sell ya stuff.. just my 2 cents.

It’s really to avoid the chance they develop bumble foot or get their tail stuck too. Pet care is always evolving and improving! I imagine it a lot like if we had to run barefoot on stones or rough terrain. It wouldn’t be comfortable and why would you do that?
@kctyphoon
@kctyphoon 4 жыл бұрын
Here's an idea - MAYBE - the tried and true metal wheels became "dangerous" when companies that make them finally realized if they told you it was dangerous, you'd be willing to buy a dozen of the wheels that get eaten, which they charge more for, instead of people just buying the one wheel that lasts forever? A nerf ball can be called dangerous if someone was marketing an alternative.

thecasualtrollingpuma While there’s a chance nothing will go wrong with your gerbil and wired wheels, accidents do happen. As pet owners, we are responsible to minimize the risk of any injury as part of responsible pet care. Even if a gerbil ‘should’ run with its tail up, that’s not to say that will always be the case. Sometimes they slip up on controlling their speed. Gerbils are also jumpers and climbers. It wouldn’t be strange for a gerbil to be curious about climbing on top of the wheel or jumping and getting its tail or feet stuck. As for my analogy with human and terrain, I think you misunderstood. Stones and rocks are natural terrain that gerbils are used to. Wired wheels are not. Solid Plastic (not thin like the wodent wheel) and wooden provide a solid and sturdy surface. Wooden being the closest to natural, as I myself prefer.
