How come after 30 years of training I still don't understand this idea? Though I've been saying this forever. In real life the opponent doesn't stand there waiting for you to do your move. Its all split-second decisions and I don't care how much you work out in the dojo practicing like this will never work very nice in theory but not practical. For any technique to work you have to fight full speed and full contact just like you do on the street. Anything else is useless

@@minkymalka Its okay man, don't force yourself. If you can't do it don't trash it. Just like my friend who doesn't know how to do math, he said he spend time doing it but he didn't really try to understand it at all. He kept saying to himself he won't use it in his life, so he didn't really put in the effort. When he do revise he kept doubting, so at last he learnt nothing.

Rising Phoenix Martial Arts well sir I am so impressed with your ability to be humble I can't stand the people on these KZfaq, it's mostly usually there's a lot of people who just disrespect martial arts traditional especially but for you when I read your comment I was very moved I've been in martial arts since I was four years old and it's always been very hurtful to see when people who don't understand Concepts principles and techniques of martial arts try to act like they're a expert in something they have no clue about and then try to argue with you about what they said you are truly an expert in my mind with your ability to let go of your ego I'm so glad there's people like you out there thank you so much for this writing of this comment

Jeffrey Wise a good question ..... I look at other martial arts 🥋 channels, arts that are far more practical and less harmful to your joints but as I did karate and tkd styles for 10 years I still have a compulsion to look at them .... but I started training 40 years ago and even then we were questioning the karate idea and now if I could do it all over I would go with mma/ jiujitsu/judo/kick box ..... I hope that answers your question you nosey twat

the wide stance give more power and balance. every strike in karate is suppose to be with intent to maim. it not a sport so the movements will be more willful. the strongest mind win in any senario.

Well, It's karatedo and not intended to be purely utilitarian. Like chado is not simply based on overcoming thirst - it is a vehicle to engage the "way". Although with that said, we do see how many karate technique have worked their way into the practical mma world. I have sustained a practice for 49 years because I find great depth in the pursuit of this art and how the principles extrapolate into everyday living. I think this was also the approach of Funakoshi sensei. Somehow folks equate karate-do with a fighting science..I would disagree. I must say however, that I have defended myself on two occasions and it seemed to work, but that is not why I practice.

I think he coved the point pretty well in regards to attacking should it be be needed and made the point I felt has not to be so clinical when doing so , I thing he would fair pretty well in a street situation as well as up against another marshal arts practitioner , And I am sure he as studied other forms of marshal arts has it's a passion

@Jeffrey Wise I’m a karateka myself. I know about karate (and other fighting sports). I also know about its limits. If no real hard fighting techniques and spirit is added to it, it is not worth too much. I have seen so many guys in dojos thinking they were it and could sustain real street fights, it would get painful at times... Karate vs MMA ? Well, karate is one part of MMA. My perfect training session ? I suppose it could look like pure traditional training for warm up, and then transitioning to more hard core fighting, ending with sheer street fights with protections while trying to use karate techniques, short fights with karate techniques reviewed and applied for each configuration. And even using video to realize what people do wrong and how they can improve their reactions, becoming more technical, more precise, even before some nut attacking like crazy. For’instance : 30 second fight with video, telling one guy to attack like a nutcase and the other one to respond with karate techniques - watch the video - what have you done well, what could you do better, what should you do - back on the tatami, trying to repeat the attack and the counter attack from what has been advised - again and again. Sen no sen. Working on various attack styles : from drunk guy, from fast guy, from muscular guy, from vicious guy, from two guys, left handed, right handed, etc, etc... Have you been in a fight before ? It’s sheer chaos...

The relaxed heavy characteristic was inspired by Shigeru Egami sensei of the shotokai,...but it is of the same nature as many Chinese martial arts. It seems that many paths lead up the same mountain...at least that's what I've been told. Have a great journey fellow traveler..

@@shotokankarate9690 well said and respected. However, many people pursue martial arts for confidence /self defense so do you not think that much of the "traditional" arts that end with do would be pursuing an honest evolution by making their self defense more realistic realistic?

@@truthserum9456 yes, and in a thoughtful dojo that is part of the practice. Ultimately however I think it is the individual that is at the heart of the matter and not the institution. I never was a big Bruce Lee fan but I think he was on the right track placing the spontaneous creativity of the martial artist at the epicenter - a good dojo simply gives you tools to construct your own experience. Seems to be the Zen of it.
