This video helped me to understand the concept of natural stone steps. When I viewed this, I immediately knew what I needed to do. My steps worked out great thanks to the explanation given here.

Beautiful work! I used to be the office manager for a high end landscape company and could watch for hours. I am still intrigued with this process. Love seeing the before and after! Did you use flagstone or fieldstone for the cascading staircase?

If money wasn't the obstical (it is, but we'retalking hypothetical here), what degree of grade change would you say is the breaking point, the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back as it were, for being able to put those stairs in. I have a piece of property about an 1:20 west/south/west of Nashville where the grade change is about 200' in a relatively short amount of space. Getting from the high point to the low point is currently a pain in the short pants. I'm looking for options on making the ascent/descent easier.

It would have to be insanely steep for it not to work. Basically a cliff. And even then with excavation you can still make it work

Very nice! Do you find you don't need to compact the stone infill below the stone stair steps to prevent settling?

Why do you put loose stones below each step? What would happen if you just dug the dirt out and put the step right onto the dirt, and if it was a steeper hill with compacted soil? Thanks

The stone provides drainage. If you used dirt it would wash out over time.

The soil would turn to mud over time and make the steps stink into the ground - we use the stones to better drain the water!
