Ciao y'all! My name is Kenya, and I'm an American living in Rome, Italy sharing my experiences and travels while living abroad. After beginning my obsession with Italy at the young age of 9 years old and visiting for the first time during a study abroad/Erasmus vacation about 5 years ago, I hatched a plan that somehow... someway... I would make it to Italy, and here I am!

Hello! Thank you for such a thorough video! I have a question: would you recommend others to move to Rome? if so, why? I ask this because living and visiting a country is completely different
@NaturallyKenya
@NaturallyKenya 3 жыл бұрын
Ciao! No, thank you for watching! I would recommend others to move to Rome if they have a particular interest in the arts, architecture, history, fashion (more in Milan), cuisine and wine! I'm sure everyone can find themselves in one of those categories. Haha! Also, if they love a well-balanced yearly climate. It rarely ever snows in the winter and the climate is very mild. The summer can be hot, but worth it! Also, I would recommend living here if you have PATIENCE, because some of the bureaucracy here for the simple things like a visa are a marathon to complete.

Hi Kenya, nice video, great information. I especially liked the part where you detailed the health system. One thing I’d like to ask though: when it comes to renting an apartment, how do you actually make payments, and who will you be dealing with? For example, in Sweden you would deal with corporate landlords almost exclusively and all payments are made digitally (bank to bank). But, in the Philippines and Dubai you deal almost entirely with privately owned apartments and pay with checks. This means you must first establish a bank account and so on in order to get checks before you can rent an apartment. This is something I didn’t know before setting foot in Dubai the first time, and fixed me to live in a hotel for over 2 months while getting the bank account (things take time, a lot of requirements before you get granted a bank account here). Could you elaborate on how this works in Rome please? I.e who you deal with, and how to make payments? Thanks!
@NaturallyKenya
@NaturallyKenya 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for your comment. So, I’ve dealt with contracts registered with apartment owners and I made a transfer directly to their account as per the terms stated. As my bank account was authorized for international transfers through a partner app, I didn’t have any issues. Some pay in cash directly to owners as well. As with many things in Italy, it depends! Thanks for watching.

What kind of visa is required to apply for the medical insurance? Is the insurance valid in other EU countries (during weekend trips, for example)?
@NaturallyKenya
@NaturallyKenya 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ernest! One of my next videos uploaded will be on the visa types in Italy, which as per immigration law in Italy, all require you to have some type of medical insurance coverage. Some people opt for private medical insurance (in the US, for example) when they come to Italy. Obviously, you can't move to Italy without a visa first if you are a non-EU citizen, so stay tuned! 😊 As for the health insurance, as far as I am aware, as long as you remain in the EEA (European Economic Area), so the EU + Iceland, Liechtenstein & Norway, you are entitled to free/relatively cheap services in other countries.

@NaturallyKenya
@NaturallyKenya 3 жыл бұрын
Ciao Mercy! To my knowledge, there are no American curriculum-based international schools without tuition, and they all are pretty expensive from my previous research (7k - 26k euros per year). Honestly, I’m unsure about the British curriculum based schools, but I do know in general they are cheaper than the American schools. I hope that helps your research!
@ItsMeCourtney
@ItsMeCourtney 2 жыл бұрын
I was expecting Rome to be WAY less then America. It if for sure less expensive then say New York or California but it seems on par with places like Arizona. Looks like I won’t actually save that much especially if you calculate on the exchange rate. I’m assuming this is all based in maintaining a US based job? If that’s the case then yes I can see how this would be worth wile especially if you make 3-4k per month.

So say your looking at a menu in the restaurant and you see that pasta is like €12 do you convert that to dollars ($14.09 )to determine like if you want to spend that amount or does it not matter because you get paid in euros so it’s kind of just $12 and is it good to compare prices in dollars
@NaturallyKenya
@NaturallyKenya 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I used to do the conversion in my head, but now I only think in Euros. I guess I think about it more from Euro to USD if I had to, so EUR 10 = USD 11.03 (right now).

Great information. Do I guess if you had ur own property, it would be much cheaper minus the rent. Do you have any other costs if you have your own place? Also, what has been your own experience with medical care? What are dentist costs, like and expertise? Many thanks 😊
@NaturallyKenya
@NaturallyKenya Жыл бұрын
Ciao Janet!! The price of the property would definitely be influenced by the location, size and if it needs to be renovated. Regardless, in the Centro Storico of Rome, you can estimate an average price per square meter of about 4.000 €/m² to € 7.825 €/m² (based on December 2022 stats) or 370 - 725 euros per square foot (doing these quick calculations on my phone, so I hope it’s correct. 😂😅). That price can be comparable to many of the major cities in the US, so I wouldn’t call it a “deal” in that area, but the further you go outside of the city, the cheaper it gets. With inflation and an economic slowdown, I believe properties have decreased in value as a whole here. In terms of rental yield, I’d go out on a limb here and say by owning or renting, there won’t be a huge profit for property owners. You also will need to consider Condominium, utility fees, etc. In terms of public healthcare in Italy, it is satisfactory, although you may have to wait for an appointment for non-urgent issues. I’d suggest getting private insurance if you want to have shorter waiting times and meet with a specialist more easily. That coverage will also influence price of the dentist, etc. Difficult to say in an overall term. Hope that helps!

@NaturallyKenya

Hi Abdullah. You will 100% need to speak Italian to work as a Civil Engineer in Italy, so start working on that now, OR, like I usually suggest to others interested in coming to Italy, have an open mind and look for jobs and degree opportunities everywhere in the EU/the world, not just Italy. The job market is extremely tough to Italians, even more so to foreigners, so I actually encourage people to apply in more than one location and do a cost of living comparison, based on your budget. So, the national income tax in Italy is progressive, but it ranges from around 23% to 43%. In the U.S., it varies on the federal income tax as well, depending on marital/filing status, there are different brackets. All depend on your taxable income and don't include the state or local taxes. That's another aspect...
