In the central part of the delta of the Selenga River, the Kabansky reserve is located. It has been under the protection of the Baikal Nature Reserve since 1985. The fore-delta serves as the main filter of the river. Water is carefully filtered through dense thickets of aquatic plants. In the foredelta there are many shallows and islands where birds nest. Cormorants, sea eagles, herons, greaves, glaucous gulls - every year scientists conduct a count of colonies.
The delta begins where the river divides into branches. From the sides, the delta is limited by the extreme channels. The delta also has external borders. They are long sandy spits separating the delta from Baikal. Sand deposits brought by the river are called hags here. Their landscape resembles a desert. Constant winds almost do not allow greenery to gain a foothold. Birds fly here, but they rarely settle on hags. This is the last barrier of the delta. Between the sandbars there are small gaps through which the river water, purified by all the filters of the delta, enters the lake.
