The main territory of the Baikal Reserve is located in the central part of the Bolshoi Khamar-Daban ridge. These are one of the oldest mountains on the planet. When they formed, life still existed only in the ocean.
The path to the reserve lies through the village of Taezhny. From the village another thirty kilometers up the river Temnik. Temnik is the largest and one of the most beautiful rivers in the reserve. It separates the Big and Small Khamar-Daban ranges. The southern border of the Baikal Reserve runs along the river. Along the river there are several forest huts, where the inspectors stop on the route. In mid-September, scientists
conduct a count of deer in which the rut begins. Marals and red deer live in the reserve. And above the forests in the mountain tundra live reindeer. The region is so inaccessible that people almost never come here. The rut will last until winter. Then part of the deer will leave the reserve to the other side of the Temnik River to the Small Khamar-Daban ridge. It is farther from Baikal. There is less snowfall and it is easier for deer to find food. Deer leave the reserve for hunting grounds. And not everyone returns from there.
