One of the iconic hikes in American Parks has to be Angels Landing in Zion National Park in Utah. It's a steep relatively short hike up into a canyon with epic views and then into "Walter's Wiggles", a series of switchbacks to the real fun, the 1/2 mile of protective chains and 2 foot wide stone path with literal 1000 foot drop on either side. And by fun I mean terrifying. I turned around after 50 yards but @TravelingMel and oldest son made it all the way out and back. There was a steady stream of people making the trek. I consoled myself with the epic views on the way back down. I highly suggest getting there as early as possible to avoid the thickest crowds. There was a steady hurried stream up the hill and it almost had the feel of a pilgrimage. Maybe I'll try again someday but for now I'm happy with this relaxing travel walk through one of the most beautiful places in the US.
EDIT: There is now a permit system for Angels Landing.
Also, there are tons of great hotels, restaurants, and shops in Springdale and the surrounding areas including vacation rental apartments if you are traveling to the Zion area.

From Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zion_Na...
Zion National Park is an American national park located in southwestern Utah near the town of Springdale. Located at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert regions, the park has a unique geography and a variety of life zones that allow for unusual plant and animal diversity. Numerous plant species as well as 289 species of birds, 75 mammals (including 19 species of bat), and 32 reptiles inhabit the park's four life zones: desert, riparian, woodland, and coniferous forest. Zion National Park includes mountains, canyons, buttes, mesas, monoliths, rivers, slot canyons, and natural arches. The lowest point in the park is 3,666 ft at Coalpits Wash and the highest peak is 8,726 ft at Horse Ranch Mountain. A prominent feature of the 229-square-mile park is Zion Canyon, which is 15 miles (24 km) long and up to 2,640 ft deep. The canyon walls are reddish and tan-colored Navajo Sandstone eroded by the North Fork of the Virgin River.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angels_...
The trail to Angels Landing is 2.5 miles (4.0 km) long with an approximate 1,500 feet elevation gain. The hike is rated as a class 3 difficulty based on the Yosemite Decimal System. It begins at the Grotto drop off point on the park's shuttle system, which operates from early spring through late fall.[4] It roughly follows the path of the Virgin River for some time along the West Rim Trail, slowly gaining elevation in sandy terrain. Most of the trail is uphill on the way up to Angels Landing. As the trail gets steeper and leaves behind the river, it becomes paved. After a series of steep switchbacks, the trail goes through the area between Angels Landing and the Zion Canyon that is a gradual ascent. Walter's Wiggles, a series of 21 steep switchbacks, are the last hurdle before Scout Lookout. The wiggles are named after Walter Ruesch, who was the first superintendent for Zion National Park and constructed the switchbacks in 1926.
Scout Lookout is generally the turnaround point for those who are unwilling to make the final summit push to the top of Angels Landing. The last half-mile of the trail is strenuous and lined with numerous sharp drop offs and narrow paths. Chains to grip are provided for portions of the last half-mile to the top at 5,790 feet (1,760 m).

I spent 4 winters in my RV just outside of Zion. It is one of my favorite places in the country but far too busy now to fully enjoy. Thank you for sharing - good memories for me :) There are over 5,000 archaeological sites and many pictographs in and around Zion.

@@CityWalks My first winter there in 2015 at the resort 15 miles to the west, there were 20 RVs there for the winter. By 2017 the resort was 100% booked for the next winter before the 2017 snowbird season ended. I guess I got spoiled feeling like I had ZP to myself :) It is a very special place - so glad it is preserved for all to experience.

Thanks for sharing this walk Henry. I'm fascinated by erosions ability to shape landscapes into natural beauty. I drove cross country back in the 90's, mostly via Rt. 80, which goes through Utah. I was completely surprised by how amazing Utah was, and am happy to see it again in all your Utah walks.The park was a little busy on you walk. Do you think natural beauty is enhanced by solitude?
@CityWalks
@CityWalks 2 жыл бұрын
So glad you've gotten to see the area in it's glory. Yes, I think natural beauty is greatly enhanced by solitude but there are so many of us that it's a challenge to find places like that. Our national parks are seeing record attendance which is a good thing in that hopefully those people will start making natural areas and the environment a priority. But, we are also loving these places to death. It's a strange conundrum. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend Zion and Southern Utah. It's pretty amazing. -H
