Thank you Erich. The Photography School videos are a bit of a work in progress and although they don't attract a huge number of viewers I plan to keep the project going.

Andrew, thanks you so much for this! I've learned quite a bit from your "photography school" and feel that i understand the concepts, but going out to practice I've just thought, "where do I start". This gives me a great guideline!

Congratulations on the 5000 subscriber milestone! Not sure why there's a dislike on this video... the advice is solid to get you to a starting point for taking the shot. I was going to comment about how you missed the third component of the exposure triangle, but you did indeed discuss ISO at the end :). Would have liked to see it brought up at the beginning when you were discussing setting the "universal starting point". You mentioned setting the aperture to its widest and then adjusting shutter speed to get the light meter centered. I think it would have been helpful to, at that point, mention that you also set the ISO to its lowest value as well.

Hi Jonny, thanks for the feedback. That did actually occur to me too...after I had already finished uploading! It's a topic that I covered pretty comprehensively in the previous video but I agree it could have reiterated it here. I will watch the comments and at some point I might even do an updated version.

Congratulations on reaching 5000 subscribers; you're certainly are my 'go to' photographer here in Oz. Your celebration with this topic was most welcome too; it has sharpened my modus operandi to where to begin my shoot. One question Andrew; when I purchased my 14-140 lens I watched several KZfaq tutorials which highlighted recognising my lens' 'sweet point', in my case F.8 or F.11. Do you agree with the need to find 'the sweet point' and mainly operate using them? Mike in Oz

Hi Mike. Pretty much every review on any lens concludes that the lens is sharpest at f-8. And I'm sure it's generally true although I often wonder if the difference in sharpness is something that will only be detected in lab test and whether it really makes much difference in the real world. Anyway, my answer is a practical one. If I have a choice between shooting at f-8 at 125th/sec, or shooting at f-4 at 500th/sec, I would generally prefer the sharpness that comes with the faster shutter speed. If there is a lot of light, enough to allow me to keep my shutter speed up AND reduce the aperture to F-8, I will sometimes do that. And if I am using a tripod and shooting a stationary subject I will often reduce the aperture a few stops. But the reality is that my universal starting point is very often the approach I continue to take.

5:08 what lens do you have on the camera? I also have a Lumix G9 & the 100 - 400 lens, do you use the same method when shooting wildlife on that system?
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 3 жыл бұрын
My Photography School series is designed to apply equally to all cameras, it is not just about the G9. But to answer your question, I have the 100-400mm and the Olympus 45mm on my G9, and several different lenses for my other camera.

Isn't the USP kinda like shooting aperture priority and opening the lens as wide as possible? The camera then decides itself the best shutter speed?
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, a different way of getting to a similar result. But since my entire 'Photography School' playlist is about shooting in Manual mode, that's the focus of this video as well. My manual approach also lets you take control of the exposure using the lightmeter and the shutter speed rather than using exposure compensation in AV. So like I said, another way of reaching a similar result.

@@naturesimagephotography Interesting, thanks ! I think I'll stick with my aperture priority technique when I want to get a quick picture as it seems a bit faster to set up. But I'll definitely try to shoot manual with you technique when I have time to think about exposure!

The video is for people who have followed the series so far and want to move onto the next step with a simple starting point for shooting in Manual. Obviously some people prefer to do things the easier way. However if you shoot manual exclusively, finding your settings becomes much easier and quicker than you might think. I am not trying to convert anybody who is already happy doing things their own way.

Where is the light meter information on the panasonic g9 camera?

When you switch the camera to manual, you can see the light-meter in the viewfinder and the rear screen, at the bottom of the display.
