Here we’re going to show you portrait photography tips to turn your portraiture from beginner to pro. After teaching tens of thousands of photography students, what I know is that most beginners can create a landscape but creating a good portrait is much more challenging. So, in this tutorial, I’ll share tips from the pros and show you how easy it is to do portrait photography once you apply that little bit of knowledge.

Excellent video! I find astrophotography a bit more technically challenging than portraiture. But portraiture is more artistically challenging for me. And portraiture is the least favorite photography for me. Not because of the artistic challenge but clients can be extremely critical.

Great video - thank you! Considering the complementary colours was not something I had though of. Did you have someone to hold the reflector? I would love to see a video on how to find people/models to use as portrait subjects for practice.

Find out what interests the model has , start a casual dialogue to break the ice ( no politics ) , and as the model unwinds , start shooting /taking pictures ( don't blast away with your motor-drive, take things easy ) . Even if it means putting on a silly hat to get the model to smile or relax , the photographic payback will be worth it .

Love this video and the resulting photos!! ❤️❤️❤️ I have some questions! I am an amateur photographer, just starting on portraiture. Is there a reason for using the silver reflector with the gold sunlight, rather than a gold reflector? Would a gold reflector create too much yellow light? Also, there seems to be a lot of work influence to “master manual mode”, yet for this shoot you use aperture mode. As a professional, what are your thoughts on the difference using M or AP would make for a shoot like this? Is “mastering manual mode” as big a deal as it is made out to be? Thanks!
@theschoolofphotography
@theschoolofphotography 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Casey, the reflector choice is down to personal preference, I think a gold one would be too orange. As for working manual, more info on that here www.theschoolofphotography.com/courses/beginners-photography-course

Interesting vlog. I was wondering if you had someone there holding the reflector to cast light on the model, while you was free to shoot with the camera, or was this possible another way ? Thank you!

Might seem a silly question but do you have someone holding the reflector for you or do you have a stand? Plus, is silver best as I have dual sided reflector which is white one side and gold the other.

Hi Rob, the person filming me held the reflector but you could prop it up on a stand. You use whatever colour reflector you think will suit the situation. For more info on this, click here www.theschoolofphotography.com/courses/studio-lighting-course-online

Love the video. Everything was very simple as you pointed out. However, a question. You gave the ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture and Lens. But, what was the white balance? You were shooting in the shade and I know that if you shoot raw white balance is not important as it can be corrected in post. However many people shoot only in jpeg and if the wrong white balance is set they could get a colour cast.
@theschoolofphotography
@theschoolofphotography 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, it was shot on AWB because as you say, it can be easily adjusted in post processing. Hope that helps 😊

🤔Whoops. I was doing a random photoshoot of strangers in a park and I used the orange side of the reflector. I assumed I was supposed to match the kind of light you were reflecting. Well, that particular photo came out very orange... So, using silver for sunlight is like counterbalancing the orange light so it hits the model with a more neutral temperature? Is that how it works?

Great quick tutorial. What are you doing for focus? Manual or auto and are you focusing on her eye?
@theschoolofphotography
@theschoolofphotography 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, it's auto focus set to single point. Eye tracking is a mission even on the best cameras out there!
@rensli1
@rensli1 3 жыл бұрын
I had the same question. At an aperture of 2.8 there is shallow depth of field and you want the eyes in focus. So I presume the settings are single autofocus on the closest eye and then recompose the picture?

I don't know who gave me the advice , probably Marc , but between " shoots " when the model is relaxing ( taking a coffee/ciggy break) , is a good time to get some ( relaxed) candid portraits

At some time as a photographer , you'll have to step out of your comfort zone , even if it's to try something new or different , as mentioned in the video .If you want to advance as a photographer you may find yourself in " unfamiliar territory " with only a second or two to make a ( life changing ) decision .Take a deep breath , exhale , then go for it !! .
