The biggest boat I've ever "captained" is a bass boat, but it's unbelievable how much I have learned through this series of Furuno videos. Not only did the Furuno folks easily explain their technology, they did it in such a way that I picked up on bigger boat concepts that I'd have probably never learned about just sitting on a tiny-by-comparison bass boat. They're truly an amazing company. Everyone involved in the NautiGuys build keeps me interested and makes me want to learn more and more!

2 big radars, 3 huge horns, all you need is 2 oversize anchors and you can show up in any marina 😀 All joking aside, Furuno has created awesome equipment, making it very easy for the operator to understand what is going on and how to program it. I love the idea of a self correcting rudder in following seas. Don't have that on our boat and that sometimes can create very interesting maneuvers. Very interesting video. Thanks.

25,000 hours is only 2 years. Sometimes you can turn off the radar, but if you want an alarm of an incoming threat (automated/assisting watch) while at anchor, you'll still want it on. If you did turn it off for 12 hours a day, that's about 5 years.

I am an echocardiographer by profession. Alot of this radar stuff, especially "doppler" Is exactly what we do daily in our jobs when looking at the heart with echo. We use doppler in order to see leaking valves, or holes in the heart walls. For us, it represents itself as red and blue on our screen, which shows directionality of blood flow. I find this very interesting because its basically what I do for a living in human hearts.

I knew rain can interfere with radar, as a recreational sailer. It’s scary when you can’t see what’s out there! Doppler is a term used in many fields. A good example to understand Doppler is the siren of a fire truck. As the fire truck gets closer to you, the sound has a higher pitch and sounds more frequent. This is because the sound wave is getting shorter as it gets closer. If you notice, once the fire truck passes you, the pitch gets lower and doesn’t seem as frequent because the sound wave is being sent while the truck is moving away from you. It takes the sound longer to get to you and return. The sound wave gets wider as the truck moves away. It is going slower. Try throwing a ball to someone behind you from the back of a pickup truck. It takes long if it gets there at all. If you are moving toward the person, the ball will get there much faster. The radar probably knows how quickly the return of the signal is by how fast it gets back. If the vessel on radar is moving away, the antennae knows this because each radar signal sent out takes longer to get back to the antennae. I’m sure the radar can sense this in milliseconds. The opposite is true if a vessel is coming toward you. The radar sends a signal, it bounces off and the radar knows how fast it came back. If the time to return the signal gets shorter then the vessel is getting closer. This is used by telescopes with measuring whether a star or galaxy’s light is moving toward us or away. It is used in medicine too and probably many other technologies. The difference between a signal moving away or moving toward you is known as “doppler shift”. I hope didn’t make this harder to understand.

31:28 I learned anchoring without that tech and to still not disturb my future neighbors. It's fairly simple. You rock up in an anchorage, pick a spot and ask one of your future neighbors how much chain he has out. If you deem it enough to be safe, you check the direction the other boats are pointing, go in that direction, drop your anchor the length of your neighbors chain ahead, then reverse back to your picked position. When the wind changes direction, all boats will swing in roughly the same pattern around their anchors, so you should be safe. If the other guy has too little chain out for you to feel safe, pick a different spot, preferably far away from him as he might end up dragging... ;-)

I believe it was discussed on another Chanel, but does the sensors on both the top and bottom of boat get calibrated to say where the bottom of the boat is. I understand you will have a depth type sensor, but is the gps calibrated to the bottom of the boat depth. Or doesn’t it matter? I assume the company building your boat would sort that out. It might have been discussed on Sailing Ruby Rose ll or possibly on Life On The Hulls. Love the show and what is going into your boat (ship), as well as how it is being planned and put together. But your touring other boat factories, and places like on this show is pretty amazing too.

Yes, the sensors get fully calibrated and set for each individual boat. The hull displacement is entered in to they system to assist when calculating the AI Routes to ensure you navigate at safe depths. Is there some sort of black box flight recorder equivalent that your boat will have? All these system they mention will be on your boat makes it sound like an aircraft. Also, since you guys have such a deep vessel will any sensor tell you how far down the bottom of your keel or hull is within the water, and the distance between the ocean floor and y your hull? I imagine that changes depending on the load on board at a time, or water salinity etc..

So what Victoria is saying is 'Thanks Furuno, I'm the captain now.' Get Furuno and lose a husband. Demoted from co-star to deckboy, not even deckhand, lead deckhand or bosun. Just back up engineer and deckboy. We all know Rico is irreplaceable. He is the captain and a successful husband, businessman, cameraman, and comic relief. No Furuno could replace him.

Question: it sounded like the radar can listen or ping, but not both. Simplex vs duplex… so why can’t they have a device that can listen and send at the same time. They have several feet on the array, so why not both at the same time?

Curious on the depth on the sonars and resolution on a non stable boat. Also would two 3d sonars in a x solve the narrow scan problem?

The DFF3D Multibeam Sonar can see down to about 1,000 feet depending on water conditions. You would not be able to have two of these units on one boat, as their were be interference with them working on the same frequencies.
