A 1983 documentary I produced on issues facing the Navajo Nation at the time. Looks at economics, the environment, and social issues affecting the tribe. Produced while I was on staff at KAET-TV (PBS) in Phoenix. Program was picked up nationally by many PBS stations.

Hi Joe Ray. This was shot on 3/4” videotape with an Ikegami HL79 camera in 1982 or 83. These two Navajo films were my first ever documentaries. I recently found a VHS copy of them. I was always a fan of the Udall family. They were very smart and on the right side of the issues. I learned a lot about Navajo history from researching these films.

Thanks Eric, I watched your documentary on Navajo Nation and realized how ignorant our leaders were 40 years ago... I was a big fan of Mo Udahl as I set through the Alaska Lands Bill hearings in the late 70's early 80's... Did you shoot this on video or film? Joe Ray

There is no law today that says an Indian has to stay on a reservation. If one wants to join Americans and contribute to the country, (and reap the benefits of modern living) they can do so. So living in squalor in a desolate area is entirely a matter of choice.

Your right there is no law actually the govt put us there in hopes we would die off and many many Navajos have moved off the rez for a better life and when they return they see the difference I do contribute to my country I have a job always have. This video is what someone once called poverty porn it's not just Navajos who live in squalor it's a nationwide problem look in your own town.

@@leanncleveland3777 You are correct- but the government's actions are ancient history. For the past two or three generations Indians could easily left. And if they were smart, they'd never return. The idea of sacred land is ridiculous. Most reservations are arid, barren, unproductive and soul wrenching. Basically Nature's prison. And you are absolutely right - poverty is everywhere. Unfortunately, certain groups capitalize on saying it is disproportionate to them so they can play the victim and get benefits without working.

@@darz3829 I live in the rez and have left it and returned maintaining a job and paying taxes and the way things are going you couldn't pay me to live in a city I like being in the country life is what you make it I would like to see the communities being run like townships and paying taxes for infrastructure and see the tribal govt decentralized so each community can self govern just like a township The reservation is basically a socialist state. Too much govt handouts has made us handicapped

@@darz3829 You don't know anything about the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation is the original homeland of the Diné. The Navajo Nation is the land the Diné people returned to after going on the Long Walk & being held captive. You act like the Diné people are not self sufficient. We are doctors, engineers, lawyers, miners, business owners, some of us even work at NASA, ranchers, are police officers, detectives, reporters, authors, journalists, ect. Your ridiculous comments shows your ignorance!
