AMBIDEX - Robot Arm with Innovative Cable-Driven Mechanisms
AMBIDEX is a robot arm resulting from collaborative R&D on human-robot coexistence. The arm uses innovative cable-driven mechanisms that make any interaction with humans safe. At just 2.6 kg (5.7 lbs), it weighs less than the average arm of a male adult. AMBIDEX can be operated at a maximum speed of 5 m/s and is capable of carrying up to 3 kg (6.6 lbs). Because AMBIDEX can be controlled to the same extent as an industrial robot, it has a wide range of applications, from simple carrying to performing complex tasks that require precise manipulation and collaboration. AMBIDEX supports high-speed, wireless, real time control from remote locations using the low latency and high throughput of 5G networks.

3 kg payload... they'll have to get much stronger or the only thing you'll be able to carry is a laptop. Forget using tools to make any kind of effort. Forget using weapons or practicing any martial art whatsoever.
@mcarswell100
@mcarswell100 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheNefastor Some would say that the inability to use weapons or practice martial arts is a good thing when the aim is human-robot coexistence. But on a more serious note, the limit is probably to make sure that it is safe for human-robot interaction, I'm guessing it's the same reason they have limited the speed.
@TheNefastor
@TheNefastor 4 жыл бұрын
@@mcarswell100 actually it's just a trade-off for the high flexibility of the arms. There are compliant robots of the same size that are much stronger, Baxter for example. If a robot is compliant there should be no need to limit its power. Besides, when it comes to hurting people, speed is more dangerous than just strength (remember the kinetic energy equation)
@dhidhi1000
@dhidhi1000 4 жыл бұрын
@Average Joesson The force is not in any way crippled. It's just incredibly hard to make powerful mechanical arms that are light. The stronger the arm, the heavier it is, and thus requires more energy. More energy, more battery, which is also incredibly heavy. There is no easy solution for the mechanics of robotics with the current technology, they are doomed to be weak, heavy and have a small autonomy (can't go much more than 1h without needing recharge).

Boston Dynamics would not bother with such ancient and weak technology. They are focusing more on pneumatics and servos.
@michalsuchanek322
@michalsuchanek322 2 жыл бұрын
@@grayeaglej Boston Dynamics doesn't use pneumatics in anything and 'servo' is a meaningless term here because the Ambidex robot uses servos, just like pretty much every other robot in existence.
@grayeaglej
@grayeaglej 2 жыл бұрын
@@michalsuchanek322 No, a Servo is a very specific thing. Different from a motor, stepper motor, etc. It has specific capabilities and limitations depending upon type. And the majority of robots use stepper motors, hydrolics, pneumatics, linear actuators, or cable drives. Servos are generally reserved for more high end, low quantity, precision units due to expense.
@michalsuchanek322

If you like this then you will all love the originals. Wire cable driven automatons like this have been around for Centuries. Davinci built the first I know of, the Victorians were crazy about them building thousands, Disney imagineers covered Disneyland and Disneyworld in such creations, and most movies made before the age of CGI and even after used such things for their creature effects. Only problem is the inherent nature of Cable, the stretch and give of components, makes these devices imprecise, weak, and fragile compared to other systems so you will likely never see them in an industrial setting where strength or precision is key. Instead perhaps these could replace the guy flipping burgers at fast food places, or assembling lightweight products that dont require precise alignment. It sadly just does not have the strength or precision, and its drive system is too bulky, to be of any use to say an amputee, or in the medical feild, or as a help to the elderly. For now pneumatics, hydraulics, servos, and actuators will remain the dominant means of artificial motion.
