I find it natural, that one would learn to sign for their partner! I would definitely learn it for my good friends. I wish it was just part of school education. Where i live, the world of the hearing and the world of the deaf/hard of hearing are completely separated. In my 24 years of life I have only once talked to a deaf person! And i am a very extroverted person and tend to talk to everyone in my vecinity...

I'm from England and I'm pretty sure this is not common to many schools here, but my school did run a series of lessons on disability awareness. There were sessions on adaptive technology, recognising inaccessibility - eg curbs where there could be ramps, heights of light switches, narrow doorways, certain colour patterns which were bad for some people (I'll be honest, that one I can't remember too clearly but I think it was to do with autism?), etc. One of the sessions was about BSL and we learnt some basic signs. It was a really good week and I wish every school did something like that (but obviously with whatever sign language is relevant to their geography).

Idk if mental illness is seen as a disability, but my partner has learned a lot about my triggers and how to comfort me when I'm in a bad place. He's incredibly understanding and doesn't put any pressure on me to do things that mentally healthy people can do but I can't. The hardest thing for me was to learn to trust that I don't burden him, and also learning to communicate to avoid misunderstandings, that could spiral into intense anxiety. Getting into a serioua relationship for the first time almost "forced" me to take responsibility and work on my mental health to try and get better. It motivated me because suddenly my illness affected someone else's life so much. I know I am lucky to be in a position where that is possible and I am very grateful for that.

Yes! This! Went through the same things with my first love who is still my love. I feel unbelievably lucky to have him and I know he feels the same about me. It's such a blessing to have someone to grow up with. But it's important to remember if they weren't there you still need to work on theses things and to learn to love yourself so you don't rely on their love to motivate you.

hi! im the person who asked the jealousy question, thank you so much for your answers, im definitely going to look at ways i can transform and redirect thar energy in the future. i loved this video! im hearing, but i have a chronic illness that causes me lots of pain & fatigue, which can get really difficult to deal with. my girlfriend (who is able-bodied) has been absolutely amazing, and has tried to learn as much about my disability as she can from me and other people. she always makes sure i remember to rest and am not pushing myself too far. her encouragement was the last push i needed to get a wheelchair, which will hopefully reduce the gap between what is accessible to me vs whats accessible to her. i think open communication has honestly been the most important part of it. being able to share my experience and be listened to, and her being able to ask questions has created the understanding we have. talking through times when my disability feels like a burden has allowed me to grow a lot and strengthen our relationship at the same time. it requires effort on both sides and creative solutions sometimes, but when you find a person willing to do that with you it can be absolutely magical

I remember a year back when I met Chella and MaryV for a brief couple of moments at a pride event in New York in American Eagle. I watched many of their videos and followed their work for months by then, and I really thought that I would be accomodating for Chella's hearing. But then, after meeting Chella (he was the first person that I met that is deaf) I realized I had so much to learn about trying to make the environment for deaf individuals more welcoming and accomodating for them. I was extremely nervous because they made a huge impression on me navigating as an artist. I spoke ridiculously fast, and when he asked me to repeat myself I spoke extremely slow to try to make it easier to read my lips. (If anything that made my lip movements a lot less clear looking back, and to this day I fear that I insulted them). Watching and following videos has inspired me to learn ASL. And although I really don't know much at all, I was able to help a table (as a waitress) using bits and pieces of ASL to make their experience better. I only met Chella and MaryV once, but I hope I can meet them again because their patience and kindness made me want to combat my communication barrier for deaf and hard of hearing individuals rather than just avoid learning something new, helpful, and intimate for others. All in all, thank you for sharing your perspective with the world, and for meeting and dealing with me despite the fact that I struggled to take into perspective all the things that make a difference in your two's world. :)

I go to sign-language classes because I love it and I think it's important to know how to comunicate with deaf people. My teacher usually make noises (like step loudly in the floor) so she can get our attention. I think it's amazing that even though she is totally deaf, she manage to do sounds for us. And our way to get her attention is, like you said, tap her, make movements... I love comunicating with her

Hi Chella and Mary V! I literally cried during this video (don’t worry it was happy tears!) because Chella, I relate to you so much! To the point where we even have the same brand of cochlear implants 😂. I am 20 years old. Just like you Chella I was mainstreamed. I lost my hearing when I was 4 for unknown reasons and doctors told my parents not to teach me ASL so that I could continue to speak. Just like you I am able to vocalize and everyone around me forgets that I am deaf. I am learning how to advocate for myself and this video taught me A LOT. I do not have any deaf friends and it can be very frustrating at times when I’m in groups or ask someone to repeat themselves. I also just feel so alone in this journey at times because of my disability and inability to be able to talk to someone who can relate to me so I often isolate myself. Keeping up with your journey and being able to relate to you has really helped me so thank you so much for educating me and the world. You are such a role model for me. I would love to be able to talk to you and this is a long shot but maybe even be friends. My Instagram is @madison.balint. I hope you see this and just again thank you so much.

Hi! I asked about communicating in the dark :) I felt so happy and grateful to see my question in the video! thank you for including it. Here I can also explain my tap system, the Instagram question box is too small.... So I'm hard of hearing when I have my cochlear implant in and basically deaf when I have it off, which is how I sleep. My partner is hearing. Usually we'll lay in bed for a while and talk before I take my implant off, but after, it's usually me that still wants to say or ask something. If I ask something I try to phrase it either as a question that can be answered with yes or no (or I don't know) OR I sort of give options in the question, if that makes sense. Open questions don't really work with the tap system, but it's usually not that kinda question. So if an answer is yes, we tap twice, if it's no, we tap once.. In the beginning of setting up the tap system we kept forgetting which tap went with which, but my way of remembering is this: Yes/affirmative/positive is kinda like a plus, '+', which takes two lines to write, and a no/negative it's like a minus, '-', so just the one line. Sometimes the answer is I don't know, so then it's three taps. If it's a question like, say 'Do you want to take the bike tomorrow, or the bus, or walk?' you tap the 'option' you mean. So if you mean biking you tap once, the bus twice, or thrice for walking. If my partner didn't hear or understand the question he draws a circle on me with his finger, kinda like a repeat symbol. It's not based on morse code or anything (though we are considering learning it) and it's not a perfect system, but it works for us :) Thanks for sharing how you guys navigate this in your lives, it's really chill and interesting to hear your experiences. x Melissa

Omg omg omg!!!!!!! I think it’d be really cool if you guys and this other KZfaq couple met. Either in person or zoom video chat 😅. They go by, “Sign Duo”. Though one couple is completely deaf and the other is not, they still communicate through ASL and have been since (I think) high school/college? Hope all goes well. Love y’all already ✨❤️❤️❤️❤️🤟🏽

It's nice that you want to help others in the way you both do. Being hearing impaired impacts on daily life, and it can be difficult to cope with it, more so I think if you have been able to hear in the past. In big cities, there is more of a chance for a club or social place to meet others with the same kind of condition, where I live, our only club closed down as it is a small town. Plus, being a small town there is not a lot of hearing-impaired people who want to join a club. So, it is thanks to people like yourselves and others plus videos that are at least bridging a small gap.
