Thanks for the video. I served on the Tamaroa in 1985 for a few years in New Hampshire. She's at the bottom now off the coast of New Jersey. RIP to the Fast Attack Tug WMEC 166

There were two cutters commissioned in 1980. One was the Ute and I forget the other name. The other one was hit by a Japaneese fighter off Okinawa WW2. I rode her for 2 weeks in the early 80' to bring them up to speed on Law Enforcement off Key West.

Thank you for your videos. I served aboard the Tampa out of boat camp from 1986-87, Northwind 1988-89, and Valiant 1998-2000. Northwind was my favorite ship, Arctic East Summer 1988. I was a Radioman/Telecomms Specialists, made Chief, went Direct Commission Officer Program (C4IT) and retired after over 21 years as a LTJG🏄🏄🏄👍🏻👈🏻

Buddy of mine got the Northwind out of RM school. Met up with him the following Spring of 82 at GITMO for REFTRA. I have a Northwind hat hanging on the wall next me as I type this. 73's Edit: Forgot to mention, another buddy (I was his Commsta Honolulu sponsor, showed up at NMO in the mid 80's as a RM3. He retired a few years ago as a LCDR. Same path as you, just stayed in for 26 years. He was old school and it got to the point he wouldn't get "invited" to some of the meetings because of how CG comms was heading. So, he got fed up and retired. Just recently, I would listen to Sector Detroit's marine broadcasts. IMO, not only an embarrassment to the Comms world, but to the CG in general. Even listening to the weax bcst out of NMN is a joke. They could have at least stole Jim Cantore's voice over and made it somewhat interesting.

I served on the Tam 1970-71 out of Govenors. Island. My first mission on her was to tow a disabled Navy ship from sea back to harbor. Smiled a lot during that one. People probably know her because of the movie, The Perfect Storm. Here’s one not known by the public. One night 5 Coasties (one from the Tam) mutinied. Pulled a gun on the poor swab on watch, with the purpose of high jacking the 166. What were they thinking? They were shortly apprehended. I was 19 and because I was recently issued a govt driving license, was given a 45 and instructed to transport one of the would be mutineers to the Brooklyn Navy Yard where he would then be sent to a Philadelphia Naval prison. I was told if he got away, I would do his 3 years. For the first part of the ride, he kept begging me to let him escape. Though I had no intention of shooting him, I told him if he tried anything I’d shoot him. I said I wouldn’t kill him. I would just put one in his knee cap. That silenced him. The rest of the time on Tam was mostly enjoyable. The Tam. The only Coast Guard submarine. Sunk once by the Japanese in WWII, 3 times by the US. Wait, make that 4; counting her being put to rest; serving as a man made reef.

The 3 little pigs > Ute, Tamaroa and I forgot the third. The Ute was in Key West and welded to the dock. The hull was so rusted, it was ordered not to sail

The military sure got their money's worth on these old ships. Seems like the newer ones are being decommissioned before the paint's dry.

I think the Escape was actually CG commisioned in Jan. 1981, not 80. I was coming out of boot camp and some in our company jumped the billet thinking it was a new cutter. Later, when they found out it was actually a damned old seagoing tug, everyone broke their balls about it. Toot Toot!! I got the Dauntless out of Miami Beach. Good times, busted so much weed ,Reagan gave us a ribbon.

Escape was actually a salvage ship. I served on her 1961-1962. I guess I take exception in calling her a tug.

What a beautiful ship , ♥️🇺🇸♥️ 🇺🇸 made in the USA, this Coast Guard cutter has the same knuckle bow , that we had on our 81-footer, after refitting the shipyard it was an 84 footer, we didn't have a deck Cannon but we had an M60 portable motor tube , twin mounted port and starboard M60 machine guns 8-man crew each man was issued an M16 and a 45, we also carried claymore mines and fragmentation grenades for sinking the vessels that were penetrating United States coastal Waters with illegal drugs, and or human smuggling and trafficking, during the Ronald Reagan administration the Coast Guard was search and Destroy combative military force which we need to reinstall to the United States today, as always semper paratus David Staudohar USMC USN SS USCG ret ‼️🇺🇸
