There IS one thing he got wrong though, probably because he is not ship personnel. The guy does not say "verify" he says "Vampire" which means imminent threat to the ship. An exocet missile would provoke anyone watching radar to say the same "Vampire" warning, so it is not something some screenwriter thought "sounded cool".

I was a Radarman that worked in CIC and we didn't have to yell, we had sound powered phones or we were close to each other. Yelling in a panic was highly discouraged. That's the problem with have actual experience, makes it hard to not see the flaws. As for the flooding, it's called dogging the hatch. Creates hundreds of water tight compartments allowing the ship to stay afloat.

I was onboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) famously named after John Paul Jones's frigate in 1779 when he fought against the HMS Serapis, and it was drilled into my head that his famous quote was "I have not yet begun to fight!", I'll never forget it. After a bit of googling "Don't give up the ship!" was the dying command of James Lawrence in 1813 onboard the USS Chesapeake. Just thought id toss a correction about naval history but much respect to Jocko.

In the battleship portion, he doesn't say "verify, verify, verify" he says "vampire, vampire, vampire" which is the call for an inbound missile. If a radar tech in a naval vessel detects inbound enemy missiles, this is exactly what he would say. Vampire X3 then the relative bearing, distance, velocity of the missiles and the time to impact

@@marco7838 It could be useful for U.S. enemies. It might sound crazy, but other countries have intelligence agencies that would salivate over that kind of info. It would give them an advantage because every time someone shouted the phrase, enemies would be aware of the grenade and probably shoot the soldier who is using the grenade instead of their gun. Edit: Also they could use that phrase against you. Imagine being in a jungle and everyone starts yelling out the word. You might not know who is a friend or foe.

The best part of battleship by far was the part of them firing up the engines of the Battleship Missouri. And the old sea dogs schooling our generation to real discipline.

I visited the USS Missouri when she was at Bremerton, Washington in about 1976 or so, it was quite mesmerizing to stand at the helm and look out. If I remember correctly, I think there was only one big gun left on the forward deck. The memorable old ship is in Pearl Harbor now, where she permanently rests next to the USS Arizona. She was finally officially decommissioned and now enjoys her rest where people can still gaze at her in awe, along with the USS Arizona Memorial. I also stayed on board the RMS Queen Mary around 1976 or so, which is now a hotel in Long Beach, California. Both beautiful, powerful-looking ships which saw a lot of water back when they were in service! i was also aboard the QEII with my parents but I don't really remember that; I understand the great old lady is a hotel in Dubai now!

Tears of the Sun was a great movie. My biggest complaint was the team going off mission, but the tactics employed were pretty accurate.

Tears of the Sun... This was such a great movie. Especially watching this on the big screen "BACK IN THE DAY" (Just like Black Hawk Down). Very Action packed. Great Cast too. They also used real African's who actually experienced the horrors of those civil wars. Mad respect for the production crew for that. I really wish Jocko did a critique on the village rescue, when LT says, "We've already been engaged", than takes out his hush puppy (pistol with silencer), and proceeds..

I love this guy. And I agree on Battleship. “This is dumb.” Seriously. Real military history is way more interesting. It’s great how he’s careful with what he says and doesn’t. AND I bet he gives the best hugs with all that muscle. And Owen Wilson’s scene- omg, who’s going to be going over enemy lines with a primary freaking colored parachute? Not exactly stealthy. Hollywood…ugh.

I am a former navy corpsman. In Vietnam individuals did not have a personal med kid. So when we went outside the wire for patrol, raid or ambush....I had each of the guys in my platoon place a large and a small battle dressing; a tourniquet and sucking chest wound patch in their right cargo pocket. I carried what we called a Unit 1 medical bag with more sophisticated medical equipment.
