Nazo the Hedgehog vs. Turbo Mecha Sonic

Buckle up, kids. We're going back to 2006.
Boy howdy have I been gone for a few minutes.
Hi. In case you don't recognize me from the dust caked on my person, I'm Omega. I've been working on this project for like, two years if not more. Much of the reason for my untimely disappearance was due to fluctuation in motivation, which can destroy any passion project as swiftly as Frieza does planets. Anyhoo, It's finished now. Turbo Mecha Sonic from SMBZ vs. Nazo the Hedgehog from Nazo Unleashed. These two characters are part of two simple Newgrounds series' on the surface, but they both have been an inspiration to many in the field of internet animations, including myself. I went ham on this one, guys. I really hope you like it.

At this point, I'll not lie to you and say that I've got more videos up my sleeves or that I'm going to be uploading more frequently, because chances are, both of those statements are false. What I CAN guarantee, is that I probably won't ever stop animating entirely. It's far too much fun. While I can't give you a schedule, I can give you a statement.

The fact that you brought in nazo's VA is amazing. No body can do nazo but him. He gives off such a level of power intellect and fear in his calm but bravado tone in base form and then a sense of insanity and sinister aura in perfect form.

Trust me, I was bouncing in my chair when I got his voice clips back! He is well worth commissioning for any project because of his vocal versatility. I was going to use voice clips from perfect cell for Base Nazo and Imperfect Cell for Perfect Nazo, but I decided in post production to see if I could get in contact with him just for kicks. Low and behold, he was happy to do it!

Amazing animation. Now on the topic of who would actually win, Nazo clearly stomped this fight because he used all 7 chaos emeralds and the master emerald while Mecha Sonic was only able to use 4 emeralds. Plus we have yet to see Mecha Sonic at his full potential, though with the reboot, hopefully Metallix shows off his true power soon, but as it is now, Nazo wins

Exactly. I thought it unwise to use all 7 chaos emeralds for mecha sonic simply because we haven’t seen what he’s capable of yet, but at the same time, Nazo still has a hyper perfect form with the energy of the super emeralds that would probably trump mecha’s super form.

If I remember correctly, Nazo drew power from (negative?) energy used by the Chaos Emeralds, thus kind of making the 7 emerald scenario moot. If Mecha got all 7, he would utilise their energy, and Nazo would use that energy to power up. And since Nazo seemed to increase more than shadow and sonic did from the same energy, the same can likely be mirrored to Mecha, thus Nazo would still win when Mecha has 7 chaos emeralds Or I just misremember it and my argument is dumb.

@@aQrator I would have to agree with this. While we have not seen what Master Mecha sonic is capable of Canonically, what we HAVE seen is base Nazo being able to knock both Sonic and Shadow out of their Super forms when they were drawing energy from the Chaos Emeralds. It would be highly unlikely to say that Base Nazo could do the same to Master Mecha Sonic, but it is VERY likely that perfect Nazo could. Nazo does not simply draw power from the emeralds in the way that Sonic, Shadow, or even Mecha Sonic do. Nazo's entire being is an embodiment of Negative Chaos force. This alone puts Nazo leagues above anything Mecha Sonic has been shown to do canononically, and while we cannot directly compare Master Mecha sonic to Perfect Nazo, Common sense shows us the only logical way the fight would go.

This was a truly entertaining battle to watch. Both are similar in power, but very different in personality. Mecha Sonic (Metallix) is utterly insane, unable to hide his blood lust and desires to destroy all and achive full power. Nazo is a tactician and keeps a level head, but does show his true colours when push comes to shove. Compared to Mecha, Nazo isn't blind fury, but actually uses his wits to achive further power or just to screw with his opponents. Being able to scare Shadic by reminding them of their ring count and even using Shadic's own usage of the Super Emeralds for himself were both really clever moves on his part, while Mecha Sonic would prefer raw force as seen when he fought Team Mario, the Axen Rangers and the Koopa Bros at the same time. Each got to show off their most iconic moves like Mecha Sonic's head stomp-ride (with a pose) and Nazo's Chaos Torrent. The end result truly fits as well. Despite Mecha showing serious power in his series of origin, a Chaos Emerald Super Mario and Super Sonic managed to go toe to toe with his Semi-Super Form. Considering how he's using more then half of the Chaos Emerald's power, there's only so much extra might Super Mecha Sonic would have. Nazo on the other hand waits for his opponents to rush out their attacks and uses him impressive durability and healing capabilities to mend his wounds. In his newly discovered Hyper Perfect Nazo form, it took (Hyper) Shadic & Hyper Knuckles to take him down. What an ironic way for Nazo to finish Mecha off. . .reciting Mecha's own threat directed at Team Mario in the past with his own spin. Original line by Mecha: ''Monster? I'm not a monster. I am a god!'' Nazo's line: ''Monster? I'm not a monster. I am perfection!'' And it truly fits both characters. Akin to Cell, Nazo is obsessed with becoming perfect but assures his mind is just as perfected as his power. Mecha Sonic is pure chaotic evil, desiring to become a god and conquor/destroy every universe in his wake no matter what. But at the end of the day, Mecha's own stradegy of raw force was hurled against him with Nazo's superior power, brought up by the hedgehog's own wit. Stellar animation lad! A round of applause for you and all who worked on it!

You've put this battle into better words than I could have in the two years it took me to animate it! I'm SO glad that you recognized and appreciated all of my little references to SMBZ and Nazo Unleashed! In the end, I understand that this is a very niche match up, with only a select few growing up with both characters as I have, but to that select few, this battle is nothing short of a childhood acid trip. I'm so happy to have pleased a fellow die-hard fan as much as I have! You've made my night!

It's actually infuriating this doesn't have more views....a mix of two of the most badass, iconic and nostalgic flash animations from Newgrounds meet more than a decade later, BEAUTIFUL animation, WITH Live and Learn playing the background, the original VA of Nazo coming back, AND this doesn't even have 100k views!?!?!? And a Maplestory character as your profile pic to top it off....what am I back in 2004?

I actually didn't expect it to get hella views just because it's quite a niche matchup. For extreme fans of both like you and me, it's a nostalgic acid trip, but for those who have not seen SMBZ or Nazo Unleashed, it's nothing more than two sonic OC's in a sprite fight. If anything, I hope that I can introduce people to these two fanmade mediums because of what an impact they had on animators like myself and beyond. It's natural for me to hope that it gets more popular as time goes on, but hey, the video is still young. Perhaps if it is shared enough, we can break that 100k view mark! Just not sure if the KZfaq algorithm is entirely on my side here. Regardless, I appreciate your kind words, and I'm so happy to have pleased you with this!

I love how the first half of the fight takes place in marios world like the entirety of super mario bros z, and the second half takes place on angel island, like the second half of Nazo unleashed

This was pretty fun to watch. The animation did look a bit janky at times, and it was awkward how some of the character's voice lines did not match their dialogue boxes, but the action was pretty good and those recreations of scenes from both series were clearly made with a lot of love.

A big thing that makes me wanna see this match up much later as opposed to now or a few years ago is that SMBZ is finally back. We never really saw what the full extent of what Mecha Sonic is capable of with the emeralds. Really good animation!

Yeah a lot’s changed! Mecha Sonic and Metallix are different characters, and Mark Haynes has said that Metallix would do much better against Nazo. Just not sure where he scales since we’ve seen so little of him!

The animation was great. Can't say I was surprised by the victor. Nazo was very clearly toying with Mecha Sonic in his base form, considering that he was able to fight toe to toe with both basic Sonic and Shadow and their super forms. This, of course, was helped by a swift healing factor on Nazo's part. Not to mention that Nazo has far greater destructive potential than Mecha Sonic ever did. To make my case, let's conpare each one's strongest attack against each other. Super Mecha Sonic's greatest attack could easily destroy the entirety of Yoshi's Island, but herein lies a problem. The size of Yoshi's Island hasn't been remarkably consistent within the Mario games, so it's hard to determine the explosive yield necessary for this attack to destroy the island in one shot. My guess is that the attack has to gauge in anywhere above a minimum of 27 kilotons of TNT. Not to mention that Sonic directly stated in episode five of Super Mario Bros Z that Mecha Sonic took a considerable amount of time destroying his home world, thus kind of negating his destructive potential. In stark contrast, Hyper Perfect Nazo was capable of conjuring up an attack capable of destroying the entire planet in an instant, putting him more on par with Dragon Ball's famous feline deity Beerus and his signature Hakai, destructive spirit energy capable of destroying anything, even the body and soul from literal existence in seconds! And several times in the Sonic series, Sonic's planet has been shown to have a diameter similar to Earths. For such an attack, you would need to use an approximate of several dozen exatons of TNT at the bare minimum, WAY more than anything Super Mecha Sonic is able to conjure up.

The only issue I saw with using him was that he is by all accounts featless since Mark never finished. If Metallix comes any closer to being able to put Nazo away in the reboot, we might be talking rematches.

Omhadon KNOWS how to fake a laugh, let me tell you! I had never worked with him before, and I had written “menacing laugh” in the script and hoped he could nail it in the Nazo voice. That man threw out more genuine laughs in his voice clips than I have genuinely laughed in 2020. Moral of the story: he’s a freakin’ treasure.

Fun fact : Nazo was actually hyper sonic but had been adopted by the internet after being abandoned by SEGA after the sonic3 and knuckles lock on game.

Incorrect. Nazo was a design for super sonic in sonic X. However, they decided to scrap his design and just use the regular super sonic design. Later he was adopted by Chakra-X and made into the fan character we know him as today

I always wanted to see how a fight between them would play out. And yeah, this makes sense given Nazo displayed much more power in his series than Mecha. And that ending was so beautifully cathartic. Mecha was just a robot pretending to be a god. But Nazo, already was one.

Thanks a lot! That was the plan. Nothing can top the original of course, but I really wanted to immerse these characters in the world as best as possible, since the original SMBZ world is so lively and gripping.

I loved every bit of it. This is great! 👍 Inspired by both super mario bros z and sonic: nazo unleashed... no wonder. Also great music choice. I recognized bowsers final theme from the first mario bros game on the wii. That level was a blast. This video is a bunch of good old times put into one vid. 😚👌

Hey! I’ve been meaning to try and get ahold of you! I saw your question on stream and was never able to answer it. My favorite animation of all time that I have made is still probably Chuck Norris vs. John Cena. It isn’t the best animated thing I’ve ever made, but it was so fun to make and so incredible to see when it was finished. Nothing I have made since then has ever made me feel the same way.

PD: Did anyone knows whats the remix of the final bowser battle that sounds in the animation? I can't find a version where they play the bells alone. Nice of you to notice my little editing tricks in sound design! Since you've proven yourself clever, I'll let you know exactly what I did. For the base of the song that plays while Nazo transforms, I chose this remix and replayed the drum beat at the beginning three times for dramatic effect: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9F3m6ujm8fFYok.html For when Nazo tears off Mecha sonic's arm, I used timestamp 0:10 of this remix, and blended the final bell toll in the remix with a separate bell toll sound effect, pitch-shifted to a single E note. Remix: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sK6agNJ_trSbo2Q.html Bell Toll: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l5Ofisd7muCrY58.html For the ending, I wanted something that felt final, and, like you, I was having difficulty finding the tolls on their own. Since they were played in the remix several times, I thought it fitting to end on them tolling one last time, free of music. Since this DOES NOT happen in any remix out there, I took those same church bell tolls, and pitched shifted them myself to play the tune. B to G to E, being mindful of the timing of the music and making sure it matched up to the OST. I appreciate it when people notice the little things that I do in sound design, so thanks for being so observant! Hope this helps!

I would absolutely die if Alvin wanted me to help with SMBZ at all, but he’s been doing this quite a bit longer than I have and is much better than me. Doubt he’d ask me for help for the sake of stylistic differences. SMBZ is his baby.

Meh... I kinda wish that with all 7 emeralds being there it had been both of them reaching their final forms. It seems a little strange that Nazo could use the emeralds and Mecha Sonic couldn't since they were out in the open (assuming this is going by Nazo's world rules).

Nice profile pic! And honestly the reason I didn’t include metallix from the reboot is because we don’t know much about him yet and he’d be tough to animate. If you mean master Mecha sonic, mecha’s original final form with all 7 emeralds, again he is not technically canon yet since he was never included in the original series.

We all are. Mecha Sonic certainly seems unstoppable when it comes to the typical characters he bullies. What’s important to understand, though, is that he IS beatable. He would’ve been eventually defeated in SMBZ had it continued, and he would be defeated by someone as powerful as Nazo. What’s also important to note, is the fact that we DO see him as unbeatable. For a 2006 sprite animation villain, that’s insanely impressive on Alvin’s part. Thanks for watching!

I feel like if both were in their final forms, they'd both have been pretty even. Considering what level the two were at before (if you work the power scaling of both series together), Nazo should be roughly about on par with Mecha Sonic. I admit though. I was kind sad that they let Nazo into his final form, but didn't let Mecha Sonic into his final form. It sorta felt like there was more opportunity there that got wasted. But it was a great animation. Don't get me wrong. Seeing these two titans and pinnacles of sonic fan series duel was amazing. The animation was great and really fit the mood of the fight. I only hope someday we get to see more of these two. And seeing Nazo's voice return was amazing as well.

Master Mecha sonic would’ve been included had he been canon to SMBZ and if I had more source material to go off of. Since he never appeared though, I only used the strongest forms for both characters. I still find it extremely unlikely that Mecha Sonic would pull out a victory even if I gave it to him, though.

@@levitation5271 Well, I don't know who would have won that fight, but it would have been a more even fight rather than Nazo just completely beating down another super form. But since we don't know how strong the full powered Mecha Sonic would have been, we really couldn't say who would win (I admit, my money would be on Nazo since he was planet-level, and we don't know that Mecha Sonic would have been powerful enough to destroy an entire planet). I just know it would have been a much more even fight rather than being completely one-sided like it was after Nazo transformed. It got kind of boring after Nazo transformed and Mecha Sonic couldn't do any real damage to him. Also, the form is canon to the series (at least the old series this version of him was based on, the new series is a whole different beast), considering that was the intended final form for Mecha Sonic had the series continued. Alvin did use it in the Beat up Sandbag collab, and he alluded to it in the series itself. It's definitely canon, the problem would have been that we know nothing about what it's capable of and how powerful he was in that form.

Hei Darkfire Exactly. It was tough for me to animate something with little source material to go off of. Also, just pointing out, one of my reasonings for Perfect Nazo still winning even if we were to see Master Mecha Sonic fight him, is that when Nazo achieves his perfect form, he is leagues above typical chaos users entirely. Think about it. We saw Perfect Nazo utterly obliterate Super Sonic AND Super Shadow in Nazo unleashed, and while Master Mecha Sonic is likely more powerful than both of the hedgehog’s super forms, it’s extremely unlikely to say that he is superior enough to one shot their super forms as Nazo did. Nazo is not simply a chaos user like Sonic, Shadow, or Mecha. He does not draw power from the chaos emeralds to become more powerful. He utilizes and CONTROLS chaos, because he is an embodiment of chaos. So yes, while we might not know what Master Mecha Sonic is fully capable of, considering his limitations as a chaos user, it’s unlikely to say that the result would change even if I prolonged the fight further.

@@levitation5271 I'm not arguing the results (I agree Mecha Sonic was gonna lose this fight as it stood). I'm simply stating that how the fight against Perfect Nazo was handled was uninteresting. Once it turns into just a straight up "You're my bitch now" moment where Mecha Sonic can't even hurt Nazo, there's no point even finishing the fight at that point. I'm just saying that the fight could have been more interesting that way. That's all. I know the result would still be the same, but I just think the last part with Perfect Nazo suffered because that sort of story is boring based on how it was executed.
