Once one of the most popular tourist attractions in Texas, Aquarena Springs was beloved for its underwater mermaid shows and flying pig performances. But, as modern theme parks moved in nearby, Aquarena’s kitschy entertainment was eclipsed, and little by little, the park fell to ruin. Now, the park is getting a second life as a nature center.

Yea no matter what they say about the place now, I'm not happy and I refuse to go back. I miss the sky ride and sky tower. The sky ride was the last Von roll sky ride in Texas. The sky ride deserved better then the chopping block. It is a historical tram and there is less then 10 in USA. We had a piece of transportation history and Texas State destroyed it!

The State could've done a LOT more with Aquarena. The restaurant was well known and a favorite of many. It could have been used for a culinary arts class, the hotel could have been used for Hospitality Management classes, the springs could still have been protected, but the park could still be operating in concert with the state university.

It was actually a mellow and beautiful theme park. It wasn’t disgusting and ridiculous like theme parks are now.

Hi NBC News, I am working on a student project about Aquarena Springs and was wondering if I could use your home footage? This would be strictly for educational purposes. I would be showing it to my class and later posting it on KZfaq where you would be credited. Thank you for your time, Brynn

I just rewatched the cult classic 1978 movie piranha I am only mention this because in the closing credits it mentions this resort being used in some of the movies footage and I was wondering if this is correct as all that it said in the credits is acknowledgement of Aquarena Springs resort and nothing else so I am unsure if I am correct????

Yes, portions of the movie were filmed at Aquarena Springs. Other parks were filmed in New Braunfels in what was Camp Warnecke, now part of Schlitterbahn Resort.

Totally correct. I had school friends who worked in the movie as extras. All of the last scenes of the movie took place at Aquarena.

It was an awesome magical place. I guess this is what happens when environmentalists and drab academics take over, back to the stone age, nothing but a dilapidated, overgrown demolished memory. I loved that park!

jeffy john You sound like a child whining about some toy. The park has no chance with the amusement parks and water parks in Texas now. It wasn't attracting enough people. There's no point keeping a failing park around. At least something positive is coming from this.

On one level I fully realize that but I grew up here. It was a wonderful place from the 1920s until the mid 1990s. The nearest parks are in San Antonio, however I still think it could have made a go being close to austin and in San Marcos.

It was a grand place in its day. It does make me angry. This is what happens when liberals and dry academics start running something.
