We drove the Sky Valley and Pinnacle Mtn Roads in the Du Pont State Forest and the Balsam Mtn Rd in the Great Smokey Mtn National Park this past weekend. Our trip on the Sky Valley and Pinnacle Mtn Roads was in the opposite direction as shown in this KZfaq video. The trip is absolutely fantastic! The Pinnacle Road definitely requires 4x4 with at least rear locking differentials and hill descent control in my opinion. There are quite a few short, really tough, off-road sections as options. I can see why the driver in this KZfaq video got stuck in one of the many mudholes. This KZfaq video makes the road look short and easy, it is not!. And Sky Valley Road has lots of trailheads to explore. I highly recommend the trip! Thank you for your video. It inspired me to go see for myself!

Were there any spots to camp roadside along this route?
@davidhambright822
@davidhambright822 3 жыл бұрын
@@bdsbigzrx Not a one. I am not sure of DuPont State Forest's camping policy but there were no dispersed camping sites that I saw either on Sky Valley Road nor Pinnacle Mtn Road, just parking for the trailheads along Sky Valley Rd. However, Pinnacle Mtn Road looks to be just outside of the park along some portions of the road which makes you wonder what organization would patrol that road. I did see that there were places wide and flat enough to camp along the road but it would truly be a a gamble as to whose land you are squatting on. The Rock Creek Campground is very close to the park, rockcreekcampgroundnc.homestead.com/index.html.

Yeesh, the trail must have really deteriorated since i was last there in October. I went through it in 2wd with a open differential no problem. I do have 4wd but only needed it for the mud holes

@@davidhambright822 you said you went in September(4 months ago)? I went in october and a friend who'd been there before had said the forest service had fixed the road a few week before we came in late October so that was probably it.

I am just starting to explore overlanding and love your channel (recent subscriber). I’m based out of Greensboro and am building an overlanding Honda Element believe it or not. Are there campsites on Pinnacle Mountain or Sky Valley Roads? We are thinking of heading up to Dupont soon to camp and mountain bike. This is a great channel and resource for NC! Thanks!

I was near there not long before you made this video and eyed those roads on the map but didn't have the time to get there with my Outback. One day I'll get there, though, because my son lives in upstate South Carolina. One place you should check out is Horsepasture Road and Jumping Off Rock overlooking Lake Jocassee just south of the NC SC border. It's a gravel road off of US 178, not very challenging, but the view is great and at certain times of the year there are other, more challenging roads open there. Thanks for the ride!

We cross it in Honda civics all the time. By the way don't go in the mud holes, anything off the edge of the road is considered trespassing on either private or state park land and punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Leaving the trail hitting every mud pit on the side is how trails get closed.
@mountainstoseaoverland9855
@mountainstoseaoverland9855 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed that making your own trails in order to drive through mud pits is a bad idea! But the couple of spots where we drove through puddles they were clearly already part of the well defined trail. On our trips we do everything we can to leave no trace and we are often picking up trash in order to leave places nicer then we find them.

Just an FYI, I live here and drive that road weekly. Driving off the side of the road like you did in the mud is considered either trespassing on private land or on the state park of Dupont depending on where you do it. The mud hole you hit was on Dupont. They are strict on enforcing these laws. You just incriminated yourself. Don't advertise others to do it.
