That theme, NBA on CBS’s, and NFL on CBS’s were composed by Allyson Bellink; she also did ABC Sports (signature, Monday Night Football, Indianapolis 500) around that same period.

Nice, she mastered the Fan Fare in a theme to get you pumped about watching sports as a kid. (Or at least for me). This theme, the NBA on CBS during the 1980s and the NFL on CBS 81-86 were straight classics.

@@ericm242910 don't know if you've ever watched Dean Smith's documentary on Showtime, but if you ever watch it, M.J. described in detail what Coach Smith told him prior to making that shot. Told him basically to "... have fun and just let it happen, and when you get the ball, knock it down just as in practice." The birth of a legend was born, on a team where he wasn't the best player that season. It was James Worthy, followed by Jimmy Black, and Sam Perkins. Damn dude, sorry for going back down memory lane.

I will be 30 in May, but I love this theme! CBS had some of the greatest themes in the 80s - this one, the NFL one used from 1981-86 and the “Pots and Pans” theme, the College Football one from 1984-86 (First used in Super Bowl XVIII) and the NBA on CBS theme. Thankfully, I trade vintage sports games on DVD, so I can hear these themes.
