@@user-kp3ug6mc4j It's not a question of which's darker, you clearly don't get it. By the time of Neal Adams, Batman was Adam West's goofy Batman, and he brought the character back to its roots, as a serious and darker character. What Miller did was just push that a little bit further, and add his great storytelling to it. Do you understand now?

Neal Adams is one of the last legends left from the beginning modern comics. He deserves the credit he receives and probably more. He was with marvel during the first decade when comics were forever changed and he was part of redefining dc. So thankful I e gotten to talk with him a few times. His art at dc is what really pulled me into seeking out comics at gas stations and grocery stores as a kid.

I discovered John Byrne first in 1975 with Doomsday +1 and was amazed at the incredible draftsmanship then later on in the early 1980s, I bought The Art Of John Byrne and heard the name Neal Adams. When I searched for the artwork I was so stunned, Neal Adams' art (realizing his career goes further than John Byrne) is a species of it's own kind.

😏 Yeah, I remember at a local Wizard World convention in which he was a guest of honor some years ago they were having an art auction trying to get people to bid on a Deadpool piece that some big name artist had done, (Capullo maybe? This was some years before the Deadpool comics had taken off like they have and long before there was any mention of a movie.) Neal was walking around holding the piece trying to get the bidding going on it, “C’mon people fifty dollars? Let me hear fifty! C’mon now! I’m Neal Adams and I’d be proud to own this picture!” 🤨 He really went all out but it just didn’t sell for all that much. It’s a true story I swear.

I'm not sure I agree with him. I worked my whole life to get to the point where I can draw photo-realism. However, people aren't interested in my art because it's too boring, it's like looking at a photo copy, it's not art. Art that captivates people is art that possesses a unique style. And so now I'm trying to figure out how to develope a style.

Concerning the 'Style' comment. I think he was making a quick comment but really, it could be a 15 minute video with not just his opinion but the take from fans, industry and the hindsight of the entire comics community to properly discuss the topic. There is truth to what he says but it goes deeper than just that.

I am a huge Adams fan but I am not impressed with his current comic book artwork. He seems to have lost a lot of the subtlety he used to have in the 60s and 70s. I must disagree with what he said about style. Art is the *selective* re-creation of reality, and necessarily so because perfectly re-creating reality is pretty much impossible. Style refers to what the artist thinks is important about reality that needs to be re-created. Look, for example, at the obvious differences between Jack Kirby's mythic, almost god-like heroes, and Steve Ditko's much more realistic if slightly cartoony take on heroes and characters. Sure, I was blown away by Adams' style as much as anyone, but there is still a place for Carl Barks and Dan DeCarlo and even, dare I say it, Keith Giffen and Rob Liefield. Their styles aren't 'wrong', just a different representation of reality.
@JackTse
@JackTse 5 жыл бұрын
i think he said it in a quick way but i think if had wrote it out, it would be easier to understand and to move forward with. i think he is saying that style is the result of straying away from photo realism but there is a lot more to unpack that is not the purpose of the interview.
