Is there an afterlife? Some of the most compelling clues to this question can be found in Near Death Experiences, where people find themselves brought to the brink of death, and yet somehow, they come back with amazingly detailed visions of another world.
Near Death Experiences (also referred to as NDEs) aren’t new. One of the earliest known descriptions can be found in Plato’s Myth of Er, written around 380 BC, which includes an account of the soul’s journey through the afterlife.
More recently, Near Death Experiences have been studied more extensively by Dr. Bruce Greyson, a psychiatrist and professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He co-founded the International Association for Near Death Studies (IANDS), which has reviewed more than 1000 Near Death Experiences. Dr. Greyson is widely considered to be one of the leading researchers in this area, and he presents many fascinating insights in his book “After: a doctor explores what Near Death Experiences Reveal about Life and Beyond.”
In this video we look at 3 astonishing cases of Near Death Experiences: Tom Sawyer, Jack Bybee, and Steve Luiting. We also consider their implications for the nature of the mind, consciousness, and life beyond the physical world.

It certainly gives some peace of mind to figure out that, even if you physically will not be able to see a loved one anymore, you will find them again and are interconnected because, in the end, we are all part of the divine.

Amen! Seperation is a powerful illusion, but even in this reality we experience the deeper, unconscious aspects of ourselves in others through the projection of archetypes, signaling something more transcendent at play in our relationships. Ive found engaging in this process more consciously, honestly, openly, and emotionally with acceptance and without fear, has intensified synchronicities to the point where I know that it's all interconnected. That magic is real, while that sense of loss is merely the ego's ignorance and unconsciousness.

One day I was having conversation with my grandfather. He told me his experience about meeting his fellow friends who died. I ask about how he did that, he says by holding his breath in several amount of time then he can go in to another dimension. I am amazed by his story and today I watch this video. He is 108 years old and still alive. I apologise for my language because English isn't my daily language and I'm pretty sure anyone who read my comment could understand it. Thank You kindly

You chose such a fascinating topic, and you presented it so well, in spite of how complex and overwhelming the ideas of life after death and the nature of consciousness can be. I too have come to believe that consciousness is the fundamental reality during the past several years. However, during most of my education, I was very much a materialist, as this is the worldview preached by all of mainstream academia. I think that my first time questioning this philosophical paradigm was when I first saw patients exhibit "sundowning" while I was a 4th yr med student. It is common for patients with mild to moderate cognitive impairment during hospitalizations to become very confused at night when surrounded by strangers, and yet become completely cogent and oriented during the day when visited by friends and family. I remember thinking that their situation seemed much more reminiscent of intermittent wifi or a damaged radio than a malfunctioning computer. This of course sparked considerable curiosity, and led me to look into how various religions perceived consciousness, as well as trying to reconcile what was taught in neuroscience with quantum physics. While my model is constantly updating as I learn more information, I truly believe that the central nervous system, and to a degree, the entire body, is a receiver for consciousness (or what is known as the soul in most religions.) The interface between body and soul creates the mind, which is analogous in many ways to the operating system on a computer. I think what is really cool about meditation is realizing that the true self is not the mind, thoughts, and body, but something far greater behind all of those things, the eternal "I am." It's quite fascinating to contemplate and has so many interesting implications for our world. For instance, I think that when viewed from this lens, creative geniuses such as Mozart and Tesla not only had far more computational power than others, but for some reason, were also better "receivers," and better able to channel the infinite intelligence of the divine. There were so many interesting concepts you brought up in the video, but I don't want to write a novel here haha - we'll have to discuss them further some other time. Really looking forward to your next in the series - your ability to take something so complex and make it organized and engaging is pretty amazing. Take care bro!

Thanks so much Jonathan for sharing these wonderful and thought provoking insights! I can very much relate to what you've written, as I was also once a skeptic and also internalized the materialist point of view during my schooling. I believe it was a necessary part of my journey to move from skepticism to belief (and it strikes me that you've been on a similar journey as well, and I share a lot of the beliefs you've mentioned here especially in regard to the soul, meditation, and the experience of being a 'channel' from something greater). I really enjoy reading your experiences as a doctor, there are so many fascinating mysteries about the mind and body and the connection between them. Thanks as always for your comments, they add immensely to the discussion. I hope you're well. Take good care Jonathan, and I look forward to your next video as well

I recently finished reading the book The Body by Bill Bryson. Its the scientific history of what we know about the body so far and I found it quite a fascinating read. One of the big takeaways I got after reading that was there is a sh*t ton of things we still don't know about the human body. Yet the maps we have about the body today are like gospel to medical students who have to literally and continually memorize all that information so they have access to it in real time as they diagnose and problem solve the medical conditions they see every day with their patients. I came to the brain as a filter theory when analyzing reality through first principles a while ago and came up with the principle that everything is a map and human beings are map makers above everything else. KZfaq, the internet, books, music and art are all just maps that we create and share with each other. Nearly all human problems stem from us confusing the maps we create as being actual reality. History, like the news is simply a collection of extraordinary events given perspective and interpretations by a small collection of the entire human population. Rare will you find a historical record or a news story with a baby learning to walk or a happy family dinner at the park. "Leaders" throughout history, including the present, use these maps as justification to permanently transform the status quo to fit the map of reality they think is true. I loved the stories presented here. I'm not perfect and I have blind spots a mile wide and I'm open to the possibility that there is a reality we can't perceive until we're at the brink of death. Anything is possible.

Thanks so much for sharing these insights my friend, wonderfully said as always. I've haven't read the Body, and will definitely add it to my ever expanding list! I absolutely agree, and it always reminds me of the quote often attributed to J. B. S. Haldane: "The universe isn't just stranger than we imagine, it's stranger than we CAN imagine." We are certainly map makers, so why not develop maps that empower each other to be our truest and most authentic selves. Cheers to the great mystery!

I think this is a form to distract of real things or problems u had to face, so u would lose your time trying to decorate the name of the 82 moons of saturn, instead of concerning yourself with real problems.

I love this video! I agree with the lowering of brain activity coinciding with the lowering of the brain filter. I've had premonitions and telepathic incidences for as long as I can remember. I've tried to figure out a pattern of when they occur. A few years ago, I realized I was almost in a daydreaming state when I get this information. Almost the same sensation you get when you cross your eyes, feel exhausted after a long day at work and clear your mind at the same time. I also recently saw a show where they did brain scans on a psychic medium (Tyler Henry) and the scans showed something very atypical when he would do readings. It showed parts of his brain would turn off on the scan but when observing his physical actions at the same time, he appeared animated and very awake, conversing with others.

I have been studying the human condition for over thirty years and I have to say that this is the best explanation I have come across to parallel what I have found in my research. Pioneers in this field say that the brain is a receiver of Consciousness that comes from outside our physical bodies. And when there is trauma to the brain the signals it receives can be eliminated to various degrees or completely new signals are received like people being able to speak languages previously unknown to them, along with the appropriate accent or being able to play complex musical instruments, like the piano with masterful skill or even having the ability to create amazing art without having any training or previous skill. As yet it is unclear if these people are receiving signals from past lives that were lived or if it is something altogether different. One of the most profound realizations I have assimilated is that we actually have two different levels of Consciousness operating within us at any given time. First there is what I call the Hominid Consciousness that is Ego based and is fully focused on bodily survival needs like, social acceptance (status), resource accumulation and reproduction. This is where people who display the dark triad traits are fully invested with almost no consideration for the other form of Consciousness. People who experience devastatingly strong drug ad dictions and hard core alcoholics are also in this level of Consciousness which is fully contained and originated within the body itself. When the body ceases to exist, so does this level of Consciousness. The other is what I have learned to call Universal Consciousness which is often referred to as a higher level of Consciousness. This is more outwardly focused where empathy, community social volunteering and Spiritual awareness is displayed. This Consciousness is external to the genesis of the body and is given (implanted) at sometime when the fetus is developing in the womb. It is with this Consciousness that the brain being a receiver of information comes into play. This is where Intuition, true Creativity and unconditional love is originated. Some of our most prolific inventors like Tesla and Thomas Edison said that many of their ideas and insights for their inventions 'just came to them' as epiphanies. I see the Bible verse '... breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.' as a metaphor for this process. We do not see this wording during the 'creation' of the hominids. After reading 'Journey of Souls' by Dr. Michael Newton, I researched on line and found a practitioner of his form of regressive hypnosis in my area and viewed two of my past lives. To say that the experiences were life changing is an understatement. It took some time for me to process and accept the validity of what I personally witnessed, but once I did my whole perspective on life and what it means to be human changed completely. Suddenly I had no anxiety about living and 'doing it right' and the fear of death became non existent. The breakthroughs that i have had since my regressive hypnosis sessions were and still are paradigm shattering. A major one that is related to this video is that I realized that we humans having this experience of life are a dichotomy. We are Conscious beings having this experience in a vehicle we call a body. They are two completely separate entities...one of which decomposes after this experience is over and the other moves on to other experiences. Thank you for this video, it is exciting that this information is getting out to the public; especially since many people who arent privy to this information have a sense of great foreboding about their future.

Think about external vibrations received by the Higher Self or third mind located in the human energy field that responds to stimuli before the brain (Talbot. The holographic universe. Page 174, 192). The vibrations are received and decoded by the subconscious mind (soul) and pass to the conscious mind (ego or personality) as intuition, thoughts, inner voices, dreams, telepathy and etc. research Sperry and his Caltech students experiments with the conscious and subconscious minds when the corpus callosum was severed keeping the two minds separate. Also consider that a traumatic experience or total relaxation causes the parasympathetic nervous system to shut down all nonessential parts to conserve energy: therefore, the neurons release chemical neurotransmitters to bind to receptors and block the electrical signals. The partial electromagnetic hold frees the conscious mind to leave the body into the physical dimension - An OBE. On the other hand, flatline clinical death with total absence of the body’s magnetic field allows the conscious and subconscious mind to leave the body, and NDE, into the spiritual dimension to join the Higher Self. Food for thought - What happens to the conscious mind as the soul continues its eternal journey? What about the Bible genesis verse that states, “ Man became a living soul.”?

Me and my partner came to the same conclusion years ago, independently on each other. It's the only way around that make sense to us, taking into account all the knowledge and most importantly experiences from our lives (note - I also had NDE which completely changed my view of the world and who or what I am; the experience of my perception of reality increasing in the same pace as my body was shutting down was literally life changing, even though it took me years to fully understand what happened to me) 🙂

A fascinating, compelling subject and nicely done in this brief intro video. I look forward to the next one. I think it also raises the question of where do we go when we dream? The whole issue of 'what is consciousness?' is a bit like asking a mirror to describe itself. Clearly our life in human form is not meant to understand this as it seems beyond our grasp but that does not mean it's not real.
@ModernIntuitionist
@ModernIntuitionist Жыл бұрын
Wonderfully said, Peter! Dreams are a fascinating subject as well, and I may explore that subject in a future video. The "mirror describing itself" analogy is very apt. Psychology is unique in that sense in that we're not studying things that are external to us, we're studying ourselves, and as much as psychology often attempts to be a "science" it's impossible to be entirely objective IMO. Cheers to the great mystery!

Posted here is a segment from 'Saved by the Light of the Buddha Within'... My new understandings of what many call 'God -The Holy Spirit' - resulting from some of the extraordinary ongoing after-effects relating to my NDE... Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what some scientists are now referring to as the unified field of consciousnesses. In other words, it’s the essence of all existence and non-existence - the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the actual creator of everything that exists now, ever existed in the past, or will exist in the future - right down to the minutest particles of dust - each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of inner enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves. That’s because chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo allows us to tap directly into our enlightened state by way of this self-produced sound vibration. ‘Who or What Is God?’ If we compare the concept of God being a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to the teachings of Nichiren, it makes more sense to me that the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people perceive to be God, is the fantastic state of enlightenment that exists within each of us. Some say that God is an entity that’s beyond physical matter - I think that the vast amount of information continuously being conveyed via electromagnetic waves in today’s world gives us proof of how an invisible state of God could indeed exist. For example, it’s now widely known that specific data relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects - including an instant global awareness of something or a mass emotional reaction. It’s also common knowledge that these invisible waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars - none of which is possible without a receiver to decode the information that’s being transmitted. Without the receiver, the data would remain impotent. In a very similar way, we need to have our own ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our own life, all other life and what everything else in existence is. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach the core of our enlightenment and keep it switched on. That’s because Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what scientists now refer to as the unified field of consciousnesses. To break it down - Myoho represents the Law of manifestation and latency (Nature) and consists of two alternating states. For example, the state of Myo is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists - including our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them - our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re dormant - our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma - and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ho, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes evident to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory - whenever we experience or express our emotions - or whenever a good or bad cause manifests as an effect from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it merely means that it’s come out of the state of Myo (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ho (manifestation). It’s the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing. The second law - Renge - Ren meaning cause and ge meaning effect, governs and controls the functions of Myoho - these two laws of Myoho and Renge, not only function together simultaneously but also underlies all spiritual and physical existence. The final and third part of the tri-combination - Kyo, is the Law that allows Myoho to integrate with Renge - or vice versa. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects all Life and matter - as well as the past, present and future. It’s also sometimes termed the Universal Law of Communication - perhaps it could even be compared with the string theory that many scientists now suspect exists. Just as the cells in our body, our thoughts, feelings and everything else is continually fluctuating within us - all that exists in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux - constantly controlled by these three fundamental laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of Myo and ho in a single moment than it would ever be possible to calculate or describe. And it doesn’t matter how big or small, famous or trivial anything or anyone may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of the Laws ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ - the basis of the four fundamental forces, and if they didn’t function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. That’s because all forms of existence, including the seasons, day, night, birth, death and so on, are moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation - rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two fundamental states of Myo and ho in absolute accordance with Renge - and by way of Kyo. Even stars are dying and being reborn under the workings of what the combination ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ represents. Nam, or Namu - which mean the same thing, are vibrational passwords or keys that allow us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’. On a more personal level, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives - as well as the environment from moment to moment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is spinning, and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for a minimum of, let’s say, ten minutes daily to start with, any of us can experience actual proof of its positive effects in our lives - even if it only makes us feel good on the inside, there will be a definite positive effect. That’s because we’re able to pierce through the thickest layers of our karma and activate our inherent Buddha Nature (our enlightened state). By so doing, we’re then able to bring forth the wisdom and good fortune that we need to challenge, overcome and change our adverse circumstances - turn them into positive ones - or manifest and gain even greater fulfilment in our daily lives from our accumulated good karma. This also allows us to bring forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that’s preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we indeed are - regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexuality. We’re also able to see and understand our circumstances and the environment far more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. As I’ve already mentioned, everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect - the ‘actual-proof-strength’ resulting from chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo always depends on our determination, sincerity and dedication. For example, the levels of difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, producing a great song, and so on. Something else that’s very important to always respect and acknowledge is that the Law (or if you prefer God) is in everyone and everything. NB: There are frightening and disturbing sounds, and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It’s the emotional result of any noise or sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day, we are producing a sound vibration that’s the password to our true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things - such as your fears and desires etc. The best way to get the desired result when chanting is not to view things conventionally - rather than reaching out to an external source, we need to reach into our own lives and bring our needs and desires to fruition from within - including the good fortune and strength to achieve any help that we may need. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo also reaches out externally and draws us towards, or draws towards us, what we need to make us happy from our environment. For example, it helps us to be in the right place at the right time - to make better choices and decisions and so forth. We need to think of it as a seed within us that we’re watering and bringing sunshine to for it to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit or flowers. It’s also important to understand that everything we need in life, including the answer to every question and the potential to achieve every dream, already exists within us.

Not everyone can take in every kind of wisdom. I once dated a girl in my younger years. Very attractive, very intelligent and sociable, beautiful smile, warm, genuine personality but there was a "chip" of sorts missing in her hardware: music. I was a musician way back then and loved music so very much, still do. Her favorite song was by a female artist I can't recall but the strange thing is that when that song came on, back in the first dawnings of FM radio, I recognized it the first note or two while she always had to wait until the lyrics began to be certain it was "her" song, no matter how many times she heard it. I could see it happening but I just could not understand it. Tone deaf? I suppose so. Ulysses S. Grant said that he knew two songs: one was Yankee Doodle Dandy and the other one wasn't. Those of us who are open to the mysteries of Life, to Synchronicity and to NDEs sometimes do not understand why others reject this great wisdom out of hand. Perhaps they too have a certain kind of "chip" missing in their hardware and are not quite accountable in ways that we are. Who knows. Perhaps they have a wisdom, perhaps they are on a "frequency" that we cannot comprehend. Stranger things have happened.

My father survived a heart attack back in 1996. A few months later, he told me he witnessed the whole scene from above, while it was taking place, with the ER team trying to reanimate him and everything. He could see himself, lying on his back with his eyes closed, as well as the medical staff working on him. Once they’d succeeded in getting his heart beating again, he opened his eyes and muttered to the doctor “Why did you bring me back? I was feeling so well…” To which the doc answered “I’m just doing my job.” My father was a staunch atheist. I wasn’t sure what to make of that story back then because he could sometimes make odd jokes. Today, I know he was serious and now that he passed away 15 years ago, I regret to have not asked him more about his experience. Not only to better understand what happened but also to help him digest something that didn’t fit into his worldview.

Wow, that's truly remarkable, Dalesco! I love reading about NDE accounts. I think one of the fascinating things about them is atheists like your father report wanting to stay there and not come back, which is contrary to all expectations we might have about them. For me, these accounts combined with my own spiritual experiences have convinced me that what's waiting for us at the end of all this is a place of pure love, joy, and acceptance. My father also had a NDE. Thanks as always for your continued support, Dalesco. I appreciate you

I feel that its true, there is some sort of live after Death and it really makes perfect sense that the conscious is the first and then the Brain to filter out informations, also there is the ego/identity that also increases the filtering using bias? And the conscious or more like the real you has less control over your life. Maybe more or less that could explain why some fall for trickery and manipulation? The conscious is the one that does not fall for it, the real you can see through it all, because of the wisdom of many incarnations. The bigger the ego/identity the more one is affected by manipulation, i feel.

I haven’t experienced a near death experience but I am training myself to astral project which is extremely similar. I have experienced it twice once spontaneously and once deliberately. You will know it has happened to you because of the undeniable feeling of the two selves, the physical body you have left behind which you are aware of and that you as a point of awareness are having an experience with out it. I am reading journeys out of the body by Robert Monroe which I think you would find fascinating, I would love to see you look into astral projection in one of your videos.

Is'nt seeing through one another's eyes exactly what we do when reading a book or watching a film? If it's well done, we feel with the protagonist, we understand what's happening, much clearer than we see and understand the things we ourself experience because our ego gets in the way of real understanding. We are always on our side. But if you can lose your ego, just for a short time, you are able to see and understand. Maybe not as clear as when you're dead, that's something else. But clear enough to understand another human being. And see the world through the eyes of a stranger. It happens all the time, but we are trained to dismiss the thought that this is real. But if we stop to question what we experience, it becomes real. It connects us with other people. But there are forces who don't want us to connect on that level. It is dangerous for them. They tell us it's not real, what we think is crazy. It's unscientific. Trust me, bro. I never felt that, it is impossible. I'm a scientist, I know what I'm talking about.😂

I never thought of my experience as NDE....With my hands tied, a .38 calibre gun on my forehead, there was no time for panic so I told myself I wasn't going home that April evening in 1989. The moment I gave myself up for dead, a feeling of peace swept all over me. It felt beautiful. This is just one ND-ish experience. My first near death happened when I was a baby. Mother said she found me dead or almost dead in my cot. My lips were blue and fingernails black, I had broncho-pneumonia. She did not tell me how I came to because the story would hop to the next sickness episode when I had measles and chicken pox at the same time. I wasn't even two years old. She had the chicken pox from me, too, my poor mother. 😝🤣🥰 I had at least 4 more experiences of being in the verge of crossing the threshold, like death interrupted. I must be known to guards at the pearly gates as a cheeky imp who couldn't decide so they let me be. What I mean is that, death is not a sad occasion or a painful experience. I wouldn't recommend or simulate it but it makes one not take life for granted.

@@ModernIntuitionistI have seen the white light; the tunnel; the feeling of being sucked into somewhere...but I learned not to tell because Mother would throw nervous fits of diarrhea. The "power" I got from the flitting between life and death; I would dream of dead relatives or close family friends. Then I would tell my dream to the dead's beloved...an example: I dreamt of my cousin Ferdinand who died of gunshot wound in the head. He sat forlorn on a coconut tree trunk by the beach at sunset. He bade me to tell his widow to visit his grave. And I did...the widow hadn't visited the grave for many weeks. When she finally visited, the grave had been infested by black ants she had to call pest control...Another true story, the widower of my best friend asked me to please tell him if his Sheila would visit me in my dream. And she did. I saw her in a waiting room with plush red seat. She sat uncomfortably between two beings that I saw her in the act of making herself small saying "What am I doing between these two?" The next day I rang the widower and told him my dream. He then told me He was already engaged and asked for my blessing to marry and not judge him because it wasn't even 10 months since my friend's passing...I have many such dreams they have become part of my existence.

For me, you do not need a near death experience or read a book to know you will relive your life and you will see your own actions from the perspective of the others involved. I feel that there are many of us who know that to be true and are served on a silver platter to be mocked by the bullies of this world. Just my two cents.

I mean why wouldn’t there be an afterlife. Look where we are, where did this come from and how can there be endless creations that just come out of nowhere and somehow we have infinite materials to constantly build and make new things with it. You think this all just popped up here by accident and somehow everything functions like an intelligent system all by itself?? It’s staggeringly strange how people think this intelligent existence just came all by itself and there’s nothing afterwards. I mean where do planets come from? How did they get there and how are they so detailed, alive and have their own order? Who mixed the perfect elements together for the sun or stars to be perfectly circular balls of fire that never burn out?? You can’t find order and intelligence without something intelligent creating it.
