I've just watched Helena's version of this. The common content shows off the different styles and approaches not only in the image but in the videos as well. It really brings home how much our imaging is individualized, even though we are all shooting the same subject! Thanks to both of you for working together on these and looking forward to the next one! Oh, and nice to see and listen to you on Shawn's latest chat show. That's another fun thing.

I built my first rig for starting out with DSO's in November and have only had one night of imaging due to the weather in the Pacific Northwest, but these videos really make me excited for heading into this journey. I'll be starting with an Ioptron Starhunter goto mount, a Skywatcher 72 ED doublet, an Askar FMA180 triplet for extra wide angle to add some options, and an h-alpha modded Canon T5i as the camera. I know it's not overly advanced, but even my first night imaging Andromeda and knowing I was able to capture another galaxy was really rewarding. I'll consider whether a general narrowband filter will be useful for me at some point down the road, but my city also has moved exclusively to LED streetlights which may complicate things.

I love using a selective colors mask. Thanks to you. It makes processing so much easier. I’ve actually used it a lot lately and gives so much flexibility it creating contrast and definition. I got 7 hours hso on the horse head and was using selective color and accidentally made it look almost exactly like a broadband capture of the Orion Nebula. And speaking of that, my 7 hour capture of orion in narrowband hso now looks very close to a broadband capture. Except for the running man next to it cuz thats a reflection nebula. It was weird seeing just a orange glow inside the dust cloud where the running man should be. Then I realized…ohhh…just like the triffid.

I prefer Helena's take. Subtle colors and contrast directly play on the tenuiousness of our position in the cosmos. It feels thin and light - plays on a reality of the density in Nebulas and space. It plays on a human reality. I can appreciate Poppy colors and contrast. As a style, it lends itself to an intsense wonderment and awe. Much more forward a presentation. For me they both achieve similar things in different ways and often enough that is dictated by the viewer's mood. I do enjoy these collaborations. Do something with Astrobiscut! Congrats you two -:)

Incredible images! Nico, yours reminds me of the old black light posters from the late 70s and early 80s. You should check into getting that image converted to a black light poster...for yourself, of course, not for mass production. Gives a nice retro vibe to something so modern and technologically advanced.

Nico, I've dug out my 5 year old Celestron Nexstar 5 SE and looking to use it, along with my Sony A6000 or older Nikon D300, and computer to put together a deep sky capture setup to use in my backyard here in the St. George, UT area. The learning curve is very steep and your videos have been of help figuring out how to go about using what I have instead of buying gear I can't really afford on a retirement check. I can put the scope in EQ mode with the built-in wedge so that should help with getting longer exposures, but how much longer is a mystery. My backyard covers a strip of sky leading from NE to SW but there is a slope up to the NW so I can only shoot higher objects. If I go out to the street I can shoot E to W too but have to deal with security lighting and streetlamps. Luckily I live at the edge of development so skies are darker to the East. But the area is developing really fast, in fact the fastest in the US. I used to be a member of the Orange County Astronomers but this was back in the early '70s. John Sanford was a member and also my photography/astrophotography instructor in college. Have you heard of him? He was well known for his astrophotography back then. Celestron gave him one of their C8's to use. Astrophotography has sure changed from the days of using film and hand guiding a scope for hours on end. Anyways, excellent results from your collaborative effort with this young girl who is already doing far better work than I ever have or could possibly do.

I was messing around with hubble recently, I'm new to PI myself but I couldn't figure out how to get the stars back to a natural colour, they're a blue colour. I tried following a starmask video and using pixelmath to add them into the image but it would either replace the image with the starmask image or just replace it with the orginal stretched image. Starnet wouldn't remove enough stars, I had a load of small stars left in the background of the Heart Nebula. Any advice?
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 2 жыл бұрын
What I did here was create a pure SHO image with pixelmath and a HOO image with pixelmath, and then combined those 50/50 with pixelmath (0.5*SHO+0.5*HOO). I find that gives fairly nice star colors. After that, use Starnet++ on the image with the 'create star mask' option checked and it should create a version of the image with just the colorful stars on a black background. You can then 'screen blend' this on to your finished starless image with this pixelmath formula: ~(~stars*~starless).
