I follow you and Dr. Fuhrman: both excellent advocates for eating plants. I enjoy eating an avocado on my rice and beans or on my salad most days, and I like eating nuts most days. I believe that this kind of fat helps us absorb the vitamins and minerals in our food, and that not all the fat is absorbed by the body.

I remember Dr Michael Klaper saying we need between 20-30% fat in our vegan diets. He had had some long-term vegan patients who had developed dementia. All of them had had low fat diets (10% or under). We need to be careful because once dementia sets in - it's too late. Lots of avocado, coconut, olives, nuts and seeds.

One-third of our brains are made from omega-3 fatty acids and without them, our brains atrophy. I say this out of love for my Vegan brothers and sisters. If you're not getting enough (converting enough) from walnuts, hemp, chia, and flax, you need to supplement, or run the risk of serious dementia later in life. The only way to know is to get tested.

yes and most animal fast are not 1-1 with seeds and nuts, either!! you NEED seeds/nuts/grains/etc.

You need long-chain fatty acids for your brain, also known as long-chain omega-3s. The best natural sources of these is fish and algae, and especially small fish that eat algae and plankton. Seeds, nuts, and grains, while healthy for many reasons, only provide incomplete fatty acids. Your body can create a tiny bit of long-chain fatty acids from seeds, nuts, and grains, but nowhere near enough. So you either need to eat fish (particularly small fish like sardines and anchovies), or, if you're vegan, you need to take an algae-based omega-3 supplement. This is especially true as you get older, because your ability to create long-chain fatty acids decreases with age, and you run the risk of dementia.

A very interesting conversation topic! I used to be one of those very low fat vegans, but now that I am pregnant, I intuitively want to eat more well-rounded meals. Entering third trimester, I’ve only seen my belly grow, while arms and legs have gotten leaner if anything. So the body seems to need some fat for building new cells. I can’t wait to hear your update on omega supplements. Just remembered to take mine. I agreed with the doctor to take fish oil supplements, but never did it, as it made me throw up in early pregnancy. Still got about 60 caps to use up!

Not sure if there’s a clear reason for this but if I don’t have enough fat in my meals, my sleep just isn’t as deep and restful. Not overboard of course, but it just seems to settle everything down a bit ✌🏻

Yes if you don't get enough calories in the day your sleep will be off.
