Poa Annua heaven this year. Such a wet winter a lot of the ryegrass struggled leaving the ground bare early season. Then the moisture ensured great germination of the Poa.

Dan, you are worth listening to, my lawn was really spongy last year and when cutting the lawn it was ripping the grass out even though the mower was set on a higher setting than normal. After watching your videos I realised it was all down to the thatch and it had been growing underneath the lovely green surface growth, when I peeled back the grass there was loads of thatch. I followed your videos and cut the lawn short, then raked/scarified, then put some top dressing on with seed and it's much better so far, still got a long way to go, your video's are very educational.

Yeah i see what you mean alot in my career, the soil level is well below the layer isnt it, a rye grass lawn will always be at soil level if taken care off, peters lawn is so firm under foot

Great vid. I remember meeting Iain Dowie in summer 2000 when he was at QPR. Last day of primary school and our teacher knew QPR were using the local sunday league team's pitch (Watts Blake Bearne in Kingsteignton Devon) for their prep before a pre-season match with one of the local sides - probably Torquay, Exeter or Argyle. Think Peter Crouch was there too. Nice bunch of blokes. Still got the signed school shirt somewhere!

Dan. I experimented two years ago and used fescues and bents on front lawn and 40% dwarf rye with creeping red fescue, chewings fescue, strong creeping red fescue and a small amount of bents on the back. Yes front lawn..very hard work. Weed grasses also showed up in the front which made it look worse than the back. I am gradually converting the front to match the back so mixed ⅓ of grass seed I used on the front with ⅔ of seed from back to overseed a few days ago. Next year I will sow the same as the back. Probably done everything wrongly but we shall see..I will share results when it becomes little established.

That's fine job. I don't know about fescue, I have a lawn shaded by my house, it gets no direct sun between mid October till mid March and even then it's for few hours. I don't think anything other than fescue would survive in it. It still thins out during winter but over the years I managed to keep it healthy.

I agree, i really enjoy and keep learning, and yes Mr. Hibbert you are 100% right, i've got creeping bentgrass, and to keep it nice and crisp, i have to dethatch it like crazy and feritilize like a nutter.. i also have Rye grass(Barenbrug golf RPR), which i recommend friends and neighbours... :) hmm seems like we(Denmark) got the shitty rain weather from the UK, keeps raining here :) ooh btw Man City uses Rye RPR for their pitch .. and no i'm not into football :)

Brilliant video Daniel thank you, and perfect timing for me as I'm looking to scarify my lawn in the next week having applied iron sulphate a week ago to kill the moss. I am in Sussex so the weather maybe a degree or two warmer than Bolton - however I am a little concerned the temperature will not be warm enough for the seed to germinate, and I understand the seed could rot if we continue to have rain every other day with lower temperatures. Pitch black. I watched on Sky news and it was awesome, in the truest sense of the word. The sun is completely obliterated, so no light and no heat, so the temperature drops really fast. During totality, all you can see is the corona - the gases given off by the sun at 1 million degrees. We can't normally see the corona due to the brightness of the sun. Hi Dan. I have just top dressed a really wet boggy lawn. We had the ground levelled last spring and turfed shortly afterwards. The lawn did well for the summer and autumn but suffered really badly from compaction over the winter resulting in bare ground and waterlogging in the shady area of the lawn. This week i have aerated with a core aerater by hand, taking out 25mm holes down to 4" and also hand scarified and removed a lot of thatch. Today i have set up the cement mixer put in 50 ltrs of compost to 25 litres of top soil and pre mixed the seed into the mixture. The ground had settled badly in some areas so there were a lot of low spots. I have levelled it all off, some areas to a depth of 25mm in depth. Any pointers going forward or things which i may have done which might not help the lawn to regenerate. I have used A1 lawn seed. I am keen to establish the ground in this second year and hopefully have a more flat and stable standing for the lawn which i can then start working on properly. Love the videos.

My plan was to renovate soon but I’ve just noticed there’s loads of slender Speedwell all over one side of the lawn. The weed killer I used a few weeks back has somehow made it worse!🤦‍♂️ Might wait till I’ve killed it off to renovate!

Really great video! I need to get a seed slotter but my shed is packedd to the ceiling lol. I'm making a lawn right now. it's about 55-60% rootzone sand and the rest is mostly dark fenland silt. Is that a good texture for grass to grow in? I purchased sand and silt separatly as thats all i could get delivered ewithout having a stack of pallets i can't get rid off. It's interesting to see their pure state but mixing it with a rake for 10 hours straight for 4 days is not fun.

@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert Ahh good idea.. It will be too late to change it by then but I can get a goot idea if root depth etc. Also it could be a fun test to see how it grows in pure silt. I'm finishing the last third (2 inches) in about a week and may increase the sand a little bit as surface drainage will allow the water to go down to the roots a little better. I'm not sure if thats a good idea of just stick to water I have been doing.

Wouldnt myself or i would be, to many weed seeds in these top soils as they freshly dug so not weed seed treated

My issue is that most of the videos i see on You Tube are on tiny lawns like this one. Mine isn’t massive but is 4 times the size of this one. I just can’t afford the products (seed, feed, top soil/sand etc) to do my lawn!

If my soil isn’t great (clay) would you recommend field compost No5 rather than No4 to overseed?

Id recommend my drainage in a bag to help that break down and id prob go with 5

The ebay seller is back in stock now so I just bought one. It says 50 sold in past 24 hours. I've bought a 2ft heavy duty rake head from that seller in the past and was pleased with it. Love the mystery of what colour it will be!
