It is always refreshing to see content creators taking a step back to not ignore things such as these and rather address it (generally) to make sure things are cleared up and not so one sided/too divided. Opinions can be opposites too, but should never be the ONLY nor the reason for large negativity between them.

I have to say that I am one of those people who just go into each expansion liking it. There are always things/systems/stuff/whatever that *I* find to enjoy regardless of other opinions (yes, even in WoD), and I focus on those. And the things that I don't find so enjoyable to me? Well, I put up with them if they are needed to achieve a goal I have (not necessarily an Achievement, just something that I personally want to accomplish) knowing that they are the means to an end, or I leave them be. So I'm always surprised when I see videos or read articles pointing out negative things because for me it's a "what? I didn't even think of it that way" jolt. This is a hobby, folks. As someone who mainly plays PvP in WoW I feel this video. This season was the first I ever really tried to gain rating in RBGs, I've been having a blast for the most part. However the only way I can have fun while doing this is to cut out/avoid the people who focus on negative vibes. Most people expect you to use discord over 1500 rating in RBGs... If one vocal person is super negative, regardless if they are a good or bad player, it ruins the entire experience and people generally tend to play worse because of it. Recently what I've learned by getting 1800 in RBGs is the mood matters for win rates, even before any games start. Most games I've won have started out with a group of people who are laughing and having fun while building the groups. A target caller who can stay fun and chill, who can joke around and stay positive even when things are not going the groups way, they have a good chance at helping the team get a good come back. In my experience, at least in RBGs in WoW, people play better, learn easier and generally have a much better time when the group has good vibes even before any games are played.

Raiding feels like something I want to finish on normal ONCE and then never go back in til the next patch or next expac for mog runs. Players play test the game, players tells devs what is wrong about the game, what classes will 1 shot and need to be nerfed Players make spreadsheets stating how many years of active non stop grinding/farming would take to complete X content. Devs take the suggestions, review them troughfully print them, and proceed to use them as toilet paper. When you go to a restaurant the waiter can ask you "would you like some creme brulee sir". Ive never tasted it, here the "you think you want that, but you don´t" could apply. But if the waiter asks you "do you want a shit sanwich?" I remember in patch 8.3.0 when they added the Great Worm from Beyond in the PTR. People went crazy in the forums saying terrible things about how bad the worms were, even I thought it was a terrible decision by the game designers. And when the patch came out, the worms were barely an inconvenience making me wonder what the heck people were complaining about.
@Amoreyna
@Amoreyna 2 жыл бұрын
IIRC they got nerfed so that they became more of an annoyance instead of an enraging issue, i.e. their range for the debuff was brought way down before the patch launch. So, if you don't know what the original design was, it's easy to think people were just overreacting to nothing when in reality their complaints made the devs make it so that players weren't tearing out their hair because they got a stacking debuff from something they thought they were a good distance away from. I believe there were also some other, more minor tweaks into how the mob worked. Sadly, there are far more examples of players writing well thought-out posts about why something is a bad idea, continue showing why something that is about to happen is a bad idea, and Blizzard does it anyways and it is a bad idea that needs a lot of reworks, tweaking, or just outright removal. Sure, there are numerous examples of people just being negative for negativity's sake but that isn't everybody. In the Worm's case, it did pay off to say something. Oftentimes, this doesn't happen until the problem is live and causing a lot of issues.

I think the problem is when the number of community ideas that turn out great despite excessive developer resistance starts to outpace good developer ideas. BFA was a whole lot of bad developer decisions that were only fixed by fan complaints. Shadowlands is looking to follow a similar path. When people start to think the fans have good ideas and the devs usually have bad ideas, that can build momentum real quick into people thinking the devs have no idea what they're doing. That said, I only think Blizzard ideas are turning out to be continual duds due to insufficient development time and testing (and possibly too much scope), not because they're incompetent. When every system is rushed to launch, it almost always REQUIRES fixing.

Hiru, you made some excellent points with this video. Negativity bias is a very well documented phenomenon, and it's something you have to constantly battle against especially as a manager in an office environment. What we also find typically happens is even if someone isn't necessarily having a negative experience themselves or have experienced positive ones - if someone with a more dominating personality comes in and starts expressing negative views, it can spread and impact others. Where once you thought positively of a certain action or outcome, it can quickly turn to negative. We face that same dilemma in the world of warcraft community - there are people who have very dominating personalities or high viewer account, that are outwardly negative towards the game almost at all times. Both Preach and Asmongold are a perfect example of this. You mentioned Asmongold as having "fair criticism", but generally this only occurs in the videos where he's not streaming; watch his streams and you'll see him continuously spew forth negative comments about the game, how it sucks, how Blizzard is incompetent, how they are lazy, etc. Preach is in a very similar light, where almost every one of his views are taken negatively. In both cases what I see within them is something that is extremely common, which is burnout. It's something that is inevitable and happens all the time, and when it does the usual trend is to become outwardly negative towards whatever you are burnt out over. Preach, especially, exudes classic symptoms of this - if you watch the interview he did with Ion, any time Ion spoke he would be rolling his eyes and being sour about the entire thing. It didn't matter what Ion would have said in those moments, his immediate reaction was always going to be negative. When you have these people in your community it spreads easily to others. It's quiet surreal in that you have these same people who will champion and celebrate the decline of Blizzard under some misguided premise that if they fall hard enough, they will learn from their mistakes and "go back". When the most likely scenario is that if the game fails enough, it just goes away forever. Never realizing that their own negativity contributed towards it.

When he open up the chat he was chocked that ppl was so much angry with Ion's responses and he felt obrigated to make a similar mindset over the situation. So you can see that even the one who has the social stats of influencer can be, sort of, influenced by the negativity wave. Very interesting.

Or - and stay with me here - they leave because the game goes in a direction they don't like. Shadowlands =/= Vanilla. Sure, the universe the game takes place in is the same but the mechanics, story, list of daily crap and system and upon system the game pushes is vastly different than what was played 15 years ago. There's a lot of fallacy in just assuming that because someone has done something for a long period of time they are simply bored of it, lost interest, what have you, and it often gets turned into justifying bad decisions or ignoring criticism. Or that people just don't want change at all. While humans don't necessarily like change at times, that doesn't mean they are against it. I personally left after more then ten years because I truly did not enjoy the way the game was being developed, along with Blizzard's methods and outlook, the latter being long before the lawsuit and unearthing of some very troubling things the company had going on. I doubt I am alone in this, while other may have left due to just growing bored and moving on. Given that WoW has been hemorraghing subs for some time, it's probably a good idea not to just think that people move on because they played too long. The reality is that why players leave is far more complicated and involves a good many parts even if there is just one thing that pushes them in the end to cancel.

I've noticed this too. I made a video highlighting the problems with Shadowlands. I think I bought up some of the good during it, but over 90% of the comments are negative about the game. It's like people can't give credit where credit's due. If I recall, I gave constructive feedback in my video, nobody ever bought that up. Negativity bias can be a good thing though. For example, when talking about issues outside of gaming, like real issues, like climate change (Trying to save the planet), I think there's a good reason to be outraged. I agree it's stupid to have a bias to say "Whatever evidence I get to stop a global catastrophe, I'll use it, even if it's true or false.". But that is an example of a positivity bias right? Because someone wants to believe something is good, just because it sounds good, but not necessarily because it is good. I debate a lot of ethics outside of KZfaq. I definitely see the negativity bias. I do a lot of animal rights activism and talk about veganism online. I've met many people who just don't even bother approaching it with any hard evidence, and don't concede let alone provide any arguments in favor of animal rights or veganism. I get sick and tired of debating for that reason, it weighs down heavily on me. I can kinda understand how the developers feel if they have that same issue. Something I noticed about the world today, that I've already talked about even long before anyone else noticed it I guess? There's a lot of negativity around everything. Just like you said with the bad news being seen as more truthful. The truth is, we need to get on with life, but we can't keep living by being at each other's throats. Rather, take a neutral approach, which I've done since every topic. I feel less depressed, less angry because of it. It's helped me find some positives in the world. Also don't forget, there's a massive mental health crisis across the world, of course people are going to be feeling down. We should try to make each other feel better, and treat/solve any problems we may have. Speaking personally, my suicidal depression can only be solved if someone would get me the fuck out of my house, get me a decent PC setup, and I'd like to be somewhere quiet. So far, nobody has done that. So as far as I'm concerned, suicide is inevitable. I don't know when or how, but it will happen.

I personally just get really tired of being called a blizzard shill when you make extremely reasonable points about problems from blizzard's perspective. One example of this was a botting discussion about Classic WoW, where someone suggested to just ban characters that performed bot-like behaviour. I suggested that that wouldn't work as some players might follow similar routes to farm herbs, so it'd cause a lot of unfair bans. Immediate response was that I was just shilling for blizzard. This holds true for almost any discussion ever about the game, except r/competitivewow where people are actually reasonable.

When I think back to BfA, only a few things stand out as bad. Stormsong Valley just felt too long. The Kraul area was awful, I always got lost. I vowed to never return until I could fly. Same with Nazjatar, having a lot of verticality in a zone is just not fun to navigate. I don't know why Daily Quests came back. World Quests were just better versions of Daily Quests. When World Quests first came in, everyone loved them. No more running around a daily quest hub, then realising your quest log is too full to take them all on so you have to either ditch old quests or do multiple trips. Were WoW players really so sick of World Quests after only 1 expansion that they wanted Daily Quests back? And the introduction of Mythic+ leaderboards utterly killed casual Mythic+. If you didn't grind Mythic+ a lot, you didn't get in the top 200 and thus didn't gain any raider.io score. I point blank refused to download that addon, just like I refused to download gearscore back in the day. I used to enjoy working up my keys. I think the best I've ever done is a +12. Like I said, casual. I'd usually do a +8 at least each week in Legion. I greatly enjoyed Mythic+, until the leaderboards killed the casual scene. Other than that, I had no particularly strong opinions on BfA. The new NPC behaviour on the treasure islands was interesting, though the islands themselves weren't quite as advertised.

The same thing has started to happen to Shadowlands in absolute droves, but this time around its more so about the lack of content in a timely manner. The impatient grow louder and over all its been turning me off from coming back to the game. Maybe it has something to do with the players and the devs encouraging to play the game nonstop 24/7 instead of taking a break when your satisfied with what youve accomplished until the next big patch. I'll be back for 9.1 but im absolutely gonna mute all the news going through its release because I just wanna have fun man, I dont wanna listen to the constant negativity for months uppon months on end over the exact same points over and over. Funny how so many people complaining about a lack of content have less than 10k achievement points, have no PvP rankings and have done the raids at Raid Finder tier at best, if at all. @@oscarrios9967 Honestly, I think the devs have done great in SL to not encourage 24/7 play. It seems like the playerbase is concerned that there isn't 24/7 content. Breaks are good, I take them in my work, during bike rides, playing games, playing with kids. WoW is not that expensive, but people act like they've paid to be entertained all day every day. $15/mo works out to $1/hr if you play about 2 hours a day, two days a week. There's almost no other entertainment that is that cheap. Turning off the channels that just make you hate something that you want to love is just good sense, and so is taking a break if you're not feeling something. We can explain the negativity bias as to say "for things to work well is their default, expected result, so what should be seen as positive is just the norm while the negative isn't " For example, your microwave cooking food. You don't praise the efficiency of the machine or how well it cooks but you'll be sure to remember whenever it stops working or malfunctions, nor would you recognize when it surprises and works better than expected bc you don't set up a bar for it to overcome, rather a down arrow where it either works normal or bad However, you can accept the existence of the positivity bias as well, when things that work normal, then turn bad and you overcome that problem, you feel happy, even when the statu quo of such thing would be to just "work as usual" If i "lose" my keys and can't find it for hours, then i find it I'll feel relieved and maybe have a burger to celebrate finding my keys , despite the fact the keys missing and appearing doesn't change the expected result: not loosing the keys on the first place Currently for wow players, it doesn't matter if Blizz makes good on wrongs they did or if they listen to players and change something for the better x they'll always ask more and bring back old hatred , they'll say "it should have been on launch" and "too late Idc anymore". Just checking the Wowhead comments or bald/Bellular comment section, compared to Soulbreezy or MarcelianOnline comment section show the immense disparity between people for the exact same Content. How the 2 first channels thrive on hate while the latter , on gameplay and guides. Even someone as objective as Izen Hart , that mostly posts just data, sheets and analytics over his own opinion, still gets the occasional doomsayer, but mostly fun people that like the stuff they're seeing. Which goes to show, who should one believe? Those that make videos solely for ad revenue like Bellular nowadays with the clip channel or Asmon with clip channel just reacting to everything, not even playing but tagging himself as "wow Content" so he doesn't have to compete with other much larger audiences on Twitch like Just Chatting ? Or those that blindly love everything for the sake of it, that can't take a word against their game, or the rare breed of the middle, that likes the game they bought but can acknowledge faults , yet don't hyperbolize those as "unsubscribe" reasons like some people did for the customization when it was announced not to be developed further on this expansion?

There are also two separate issues related to the current "climate" of WoW negativity. Firstly, the vast majority of people who hardcore shit on the game like it's a 9-to-5 job either a) don't play the game at all or b) they don't play the feature they are negative about. From one hand, you can see how they wouldn't be able to form a comprehensive critique from literally zero experience. On the other hand tho, why do it at all? Why does someone like Bellular or Asmon shit on the game non-stop when they don't even play it? Watching Marcelian or Izen Hart is fun because they focus on playing the game FIRST and THEN they discuss how some aspects might work or not work from that perspective while Bellular or Asmon just shit on the game using the most recently trending catch phrases like "wow is made for metrics" or now the "we are beta testers" etc. But why? And here's the second issue: these players don't want to play WoW anymore but somehow they feel it is part of their identity now to be engaged with this game. For content creators like the ones mentioned above this means that they might lose their actual income if they don't engage with the game. I personally 100% believe that neither Asmon, nor Bellular nor even Preach want to play WoW anymore but they feel like they cant just quit it because of cashmoney. So the next best thing they can do? Well, they can shit on the game while they don't even have to play it and make big bucks. Personally I find this pathetic. For the average players it's a bit more complicated. Older players simply cannot understand that the WoW they used to play 15-13 years ago is simply outdated for current standards. Classic showed us this pretty clearly. They keep hanging onto this notion that "old WoW" was superior and thus every single thing that is not that is shit. These feelings get amplified by the insane amounts of "this sucks in WoW" videos and their comment sections and suddenly these players feel like they are in the right to shit on whatever they want. It is just tiring at this point. And yes, you can dislike aspects of the game or you can dislike the game overall. But shitting on it like it's a full-time job? There are issues if someone does that. And it ain't issues with the game.

Simply put: addiction. I considered myself kind of addicted to this game up until Shadowlands dropped. I'd sub and play pretty obsessively for like two months at a time, then quit for several months until I'd resub for another two months, repeat ad nauseam since like WoD (I started in late-BC, skipped most of Cata and MoP, came back fully in WoD). But by the time Shadowlands came out, my computer simply couldn't keep up with WoW anymore -- BFA was already a bit of a struggle to run, but then with Shadowlands my machine simply had no more room for the game files anymore, and upgrading is very costly to me plus I know next to nothing about computers anyway, so it was easier for me to just... not resub anymore and drop the game.

I like Preach, but he most definitely does not have all the answers. He views the game through his lens, so he tends to speak to that viewpoint. The main issue with WoW is they have to cast a very wide net to catch enough players to generate revenue, and that often puts groups that are diametrically opposed to one another at direct odds with one another. I do give Preach credit that he doesn't try to speak for groups he doesn't understand (like PvPers for example), but he still only understand part of the game.
