Journey to the Chateau

2 жыл бұрын

See how Patrick and Stuart rescue this neglected and crumbling house. With lots of DIY and hard work, they transform this building into a beautiful and amazing home. They share the "before" and "after" images, along with demolition photos and all of the details of this mid-century modern (MCM) style rambler ranch construction. This is another restoration and renovation project that they did together while learning new skills and experiences along the way in preparation for their future chateau in France.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

When house hunting I am correct in saying never expect too much. We all have different levels of lifestyles. If you feel attracted to a house, do your homework thoroughly. There will always be changes, you are now the owner, you will make paint colour changes, flooring, the list is endless. It just doesn't happen overnight, in a fortnight maybe a year if you are very disciplined and you wish to be done as soon as possible. A home building is like baking a cake, the end result is in the icing, elaborate , and the finale the cake stand. I think the house is lovely, so much can be done, added, changed and the end result, the polished gem. I was visiting related family and I thought if this was my house I would do this and that and suddenly I stopped and realised I am a guest here, complete your own first before you wish to make changes to their property. It is so good to have before and after photos, changes will be more appreciated. It was a super talk on the pro's and cons of a home. We all can do with good advice especially from people with experience. Life is amazing, a journey that seems forever as there are always challenges and victories. Go well until next time.

What a deep and true comment. I can relate to all and have to admit to somethings you said. I have stop myself sometimes thinking about what I would do differently. I got quite good at that and instead seeing other homes as an inspiration. I am happy that we are very handy and can do many things ourselves. We are ready for a new chapter and to let this home go to a new family to make it their own. Be safe and blessed. 🌹

When we moved, my then 10 year old daughter asked what kind of house we were going to buy. I told her that the right House would talk to me. As we viewed many candidates, she kept asking: Is it talking to you? That’s what you two do and that’s why your renos come out so well. BTW, those intercom systems were awesome!

I've favored colonial and victorian styles with commanding staircases my entire life. Now my heart yearns for MCM, which is a radical change for me. The before pics of your home brought back memories of my childhood. You did exactly what I would do, tearing down walls, opening up spaces, and elegant lighting, which is like jewelry for a home. So beautiful! ❤

Hi Arlene. Thank you for your comment. It is too funny that we have the same experience. We lived in Victorian or early 1900 homes. The we bought our first home together. Contemporary. Pretty but not enough character. Then we were all excited to renovate this MCM. It needed real work and as you said, jewels like light fixtures. Once we were finished, who knows why, we had the idea to go for 17th century……. Life is fun when we engage and follow the flow. Glad you like our renovation. 😘🥰😘

I can only imagine how you'd beautify a chateau for modern living, while preserving and conserving judiciously. I look forward to your finding a place that suits your needs, hopefully this year. I suspect we're in the same generation, born in the 60s therabouts. I'm certainly not expecting to live another fully productive 40 years, but hey, fingeres crossed. It could happen.

There is no drama which is more dramatic than a new old house. But that plumber! A reasonable person who could not locate a door, would wait until he could reach the house owner and ask about how he should get in, before cutting a hole in the wall! Tradesmen! I slept on a hardwood floor next to one of our girls when we wasn’t well and was not allowed to jump for 3 nights. I walked like I was 120 years old but it’s what one does when we love our fur babies. The air conditioning you put in - well I’m in love with you! The kitchen is fabulous. Large, food flow and against the advice of professional planners. We are happy here but we needed another big adventure with our dogs. Huge hug and be safe. 💖😘💖

Your ranch rambler reminds me of the homes I grew up with in Southern California. They were everywhere. But it wasn't until I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area that I saw true Mid Century Modern: the homes built by Joseph Eichler. Construction was post and beam, walls of glass, open plans, and concrete floors, often paved with terrazzo. One of his most iconic models included an interior atrium. And during the same period, fifties and sixties, Alexander homes were being built in the Palm Springs area. They shared many of the same traits as Eichler homes. But often with flat roofs. Today, Palm Springs has become the mecca for MCM with many vintage furniture stores and a festival celebrating this particular style. All that said, I love ramblers and have reworked a few of them myself. What I particularly like is that you can make them as eclectic as you like. I adore a mix of antique and modern. And with MCM you're almost obliged to furnish with the iconic furniture of Knoll, Herman Miller, Eames, and Bertoia. And rambl,ers can take wallpaper where as in MCM it's almost taboo. I loved the blue wallpaper you used in the entry, I believe it was. Just perfect. And the kitchen redo is a tour de force. Patrick and Stuart, well done. I look forward to part 2.
@patrickjourneytothechateau8243
@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there Ralph. Hope all is well. The Eichler MCM are sometimes too restrictive for my taste. Love to visit but am happy it’s not mine. I have the same reaction to many chateaux that are too big or too ornate. I have been to Palm Springs many times and loved the MCM architecture there a lot. For me, ramblers are so livable because they are not too restrictive. Like you said perfectly , an eclectic mix can achieve a great home. Many chateaux that are in one family for many centuries, one finds that eclectic mix. We hope to do that in France. I’m curious what Stuart shows next week. The rest of the rambler. 🥰😘🥰 love your comment. 💖🌹💖

Hi James. That was an eye sore, those mismatched sides of the stone wall. That is a solid stone wall with its own foundation. The house has now the flow that it originally had. We are hoping to bring the same passion to a chateau. Our flooring wizard is amazing. He has done floors for neighbors here too. They had these astronomical estimates and he did the job for half. And perfectly too. I know a few "plumbers" myself. So sorry we know exactly how you feel. Thanks for the great comment.

What an adventure indeed. You two are very well experienced in demo and renovation. I see you two like a challenge. A chateau is waiting for you somewhere. Looking forward to seeing what you two can do to it. When the picture of the original kitchen oven popped up... I said, YES! I have an ancient General Electric Hotpoint double oven too. It's black as well and looks very similar. It is a few years younger and smaller though (our ranch house in Dallas, TX was built in 1977 - I have lived here for the last 23 years). I love it so much. I refuse to change it until it breaks down completely which has not happened at all. I occasional have to buy new elements, but it works like a trooper. I prefer the old nobs anyway. No crazy buttons and electrical mother boards that burn out in 5 years. Funny, our house also had an intercom system wired throughout the rooms. But it did not work either. We kept it on the wall for a few years before we decided to take it out when we renovated the kitchen. Wonderful video. Looking forward to part 2! ... by the way, your front entrance wall is stunning.

Thank you, Maria! I know what you mean about your oven. It seems like a waste to get rid of something that keeps working for you, and we have had many new appliances that fail just right after the warranty runs out. Coincidence?? Hmmm.... 🤨 Thank you so much for watching!!

Hi there Maria. Hope all is well. This house was a bit of a nightmare and exactly what we wanted. I think you are right, we are ready for a 5+ year chateau renovation. The oven would have been great but it was truly burned out completely. Prior owners didn’t clean it at all for 12 years 🤮 sorry…. I almost threw up opening it and I grew up on a farm part of the week….. completely agree with you and Stuart. Older appliances, if they work, are a treasure. Not built with an expiration date. Great that you live in a gorgeous home. I can only imagine, with your eye for details. Part 2 will be fun too I guess. But we can’t wait to get to France. We had -7 F this morning……. 🥶🥶🥶. Be safe and again, thank you for a fabulous comment! 😘

Ohhhh I forgot, the wall in the entrance is a 3 D MDF board. We glued and screwed on the boards. Speckled and sanded a lot and then Stuart used airbrush metallic blue to spray the wall. It is really fun to walk by because of how the light plays with the ridges and the metallic paint. 🥰

Darling Ginny. I agree. Had a bad reaction to the state of the house. Thank goodness we saw the potential. I know what you mean…. Exactly. That 50’s and 60’s style was for the most part awful. We might book some therapy sessions together to get that out of our system. I was thinking Brocante therapy. 😉. We both like the rambling ranches because they were often a combination between modern and antique interiors. Was always my favorite. Glad you liked the vlog. My least favorite at least here in the Midwest. I have been to a few in Palm Springs and they somehow had a different feeling to them. But certainly not inviting or comfy! The rambling ranches are more fun because they were always less strict as far as decorations went. The one thing that is outstanding in the huge ranch homes like our besides the space are all the windows and the light is fantastic. In any case, very much enjoyed reading your comment. Be safe! 👍🏻

But the result is a home we love. And we are happy to leave it to the next chapter. So excited to plan the next trip to France….. once we have a bit of a lower Covid rate. Excellent point about house hunting in the rain allowing one to see leaks (and flooding)! am totally with you about fake shutters. Snowdrifts in the screened-in porch=mid-century mod version of the house in Dr. Zhivago. Love the cobalt blue wall--is it glass? Acrylic? Other? I play a game called Design Home (not a cartoon). In addition to the puzzles, players are given houses in various styles to decorate. My virtual reality chateau is in progress and I completed a mid-century modern house as well as other residences. There was an option for turquoise wavy glass walls in the tropical house. It is a lot of fun.

Great result! You really transformed this neglected house and its terrain. The floorplan brings up some questions.You have a laundry room and a utility room. Is the utility room what we in the UK call a plant room (with all the technical equipement for water and heating etcetera)? Because of the position of the doors, it doesn't look to be a mud room. You also mention that the wall at the side of the utility room is south facing. Then you wonder why that bonus room has been closed off by the utility room. It's now more or less a hall you cross to get to the garage or utility room. I don't know how the weather is where you live, but in the UK we love to have south facing rooms. If you could move the utility room more to the middle of the house to where the closet is, you can create a nice sunny room with garden views . Of course now it's just the two of you living there, and a change of lay out is not really needed. But perhaps a suggestion for the new owners to give that part of the house more light and a better flow?
@patrickjourneytothechateau8243
@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marlene. Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Indeed, the room is the plant room. Learned a new British term! 🥰. You are completely right. The whole house is basically 90 degrees wrong. Clock wise turned the entire East side would be South. All those windows and sliders from the family room to the master bedroom would then face South. Now, we do have gorgeous sunrises that we watch every morning. But we often wondered why they chose this orientation. Your idea is great and we might have started planning, if we wouldn’t search for our chateau in France. Glad you liked the results. Be safe and big hug. 🥰
@marlenebos6140
@marlenebos6140 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Patrick for your reply and explanation. Interesting you mention the position of house on the plot should have been 90 degrees different in order to benefit the most of the sunlight. In fact I had written that same remark but decided to retract that comment as it sounded really negative. Also I wasn't sure I had interpreted the plan correctly. When you buy a house already built, you have to work with what is there. You can improve and optimise and that you surely did. How nice it all turned out! Morning sun is definitely wonderful and certainly pleasant to enjoy. Can't wait to see where you will end up in France and how you will transform your chateau.

Sounds like our search for an RV. So many high-end, disasters. We fortunately found a 2006 Damon Tuscany class A-4 that is top of the line. Those travel trailers called Chateau are so NOT, and everything new is shoddy craftsmanship & cheap materials. I have a heated "basement" holding tanks, in floor heat travertine tile, Corian countertops, leather sofa and captain chairs, couch and dining slide-out, huge bedroom suite with 2 slides,and a double wide shower. 1st class. Omigosh, so many shacks to find the castle. Live MCM, but our house burned down & we are at retirement & not rebuilding.

I‘m at a loss!

Check it out!

Was machst Du beruflich? Mit Deinem Sinn für Einrichtung und Design..... Falls das indiskret ist, bitte ignorieren! 👍🏻 Bleib gesund und nochmals vielen Dank 😘😘😘

I see you slipped an ornate chandelier into your MCM. A little chateau practice? I can see why a chateau isn't going to faze you. That house was a daunting project with beautiful results.

Hi Elizabeth. Yes we did sneak that in. We did a lot of research and in the true MCM that would be a huge no but in the rambling ranches people often combined MCM with antiques. We loved that. I had to leave a smaller chandelier in Chicago that brought from Paris myself, so I wanted a replacement..... Now we have this huge monster (I adore that chandelier) and have to get to overseas at some point.... Great comment. Thank you

@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 It is things like that that give a place personality and make it a home rather than a house. It is one thing to remain true to a house or period architecturally but another to let the house rule you. I never understood, for example, Frank Lloyd Wright houses where he designed everything down to the dishware. What kind of person allows themself to live within someone else's vision down to the cutlery?? I don't care how "brilliant" he was thought to be! A home should be an exuberant reflection of the history and personality of whoever lives there. The chandelier qualifies! Look forward to seeing it in its future home.

@@elisabeth6108 good lord you just made laugh out loud. I couldn’t agree with you more! Who lets any designer or architect dictate their home? I have met people who buy a move in ready home….. And they don’t change a thing… 😳 I can’t wait to get that chandelier to a setting where it fits. I found it on Craigslist. It was in a house only 2 minutes drive from here. Kind of meant to be. I lived in Oak Park and as much as I appreciate architecture but those houses are too unapproachable for my taste. Thank you again, love you comment. 🥰
