Journey to the Chateau

2 жыл бұрын

Patrick and Stuart share their chateau checklist that includes their "must have" and "wish list" items when they are hunting for a French chateau.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

Hey guys. Rewatching this to have your thought better in mind. It’s the analyst in me... can’t help it. It’s great that you actually have features in mind and are aware what is important to you. From my own experience, I can say that, if a building has the room size and height that will work for you, most other things may be managed. As you mentioned, boiserie, mantels and trumeaux may be bought as salvage or recreated, but if you cannot fit or arrange furniture, there is no option. If a lower ceiling is oppressive to you, there is little to nothing you can do. Do not compromise on these things. The rest... 🍀🍀🍀

Hey Doug. Just reading previous comments. We knew what we wanted to about 80% and the rest was negotiable. Who knew then, that we would get more than we asked for. Somewhere in my youth or childhood, I must have done something good……. What a reward. Volunteering a year at an AIDS hospice in Africa, working with disadvantaged communities and the deaf, maybe somewhere I got enough good karma to get lucky, not just with my partner in crime. Thanks for the great comment.

Hello there Maria. Thank you for the lovely comment. We know we might not end up with a chateau with 16 feet or 4 meter high ceilings. Who can pay for heating those rooms….. But when we get our chateau we will restore it with care to authenticity. Stay tuned and again, thank you

I didn’t understand anything about decor . I wasn’t taught . But I loved the texture and quality of them. I would spend hours . My mom loved chinoiserie. Since my adoptive parents were born 1914 and 1926 I grew up with antiques but did not know they were . Just house hold items bought cheap at a yard sale.

Gents, very wise to make 'a must have and wish list'. Being near a hospital, necessary and sensible. Fresh pains au chocolat and baguettes, absolute must have's, can't do without most certainly not in France, obviously!! Good fireplaces, important. Alcoves... yes, wish list. One can always construct them one's self. Trees, yes important! And there are always trees on these estates and otherwise you plant the trees you wish for additionally yourselves. Outbuildings for gites, necessity!! Une allee.... nice, not always available.... Symmetry, yes a necessity, certainly where it concerns 17th and 18th architecture. A sort of a grand stairway and original floors, YES! Paneling, yes!! Stuart, your toile design, gorgeous, bravo!!!! Do you sell it? Thank you both so much for showing all beautiful examples!

@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 I must admit I always plant a lilac wherever we are. But that is more of a shrub. I am in Northen Ontario Canada so our tree options are not as varied as what you will have available in Europe. I do love elms, oaks and apple trees. And of course maples. And I do really appreciate the lovely growth in the spring and the golden needles in the fall of European larch. Basically a lovely variety so that one is not decimated by disease.

@@pv6450 That is such a great reminder. We planted multiple lilacs that froze to the ground 2 years ago. In the 1890’s there were over 500 varieties of lilacs in France. Thank you it’s on the list! Apple trees are on the list. M too as a must have with other fruit trees. My parents have multiple old varieties in their garden in Germany. Larch is such a pretty tree - as long as they are not next to the house. Thank you for your suggestions. Please give us more if you can think of something and I can say, please come visit us!

That's a big list. We searched throughout France and Austria and settled on ours and our must-haves changed quickly. The big thing for us was heating/energy efficiency. In addition to being environmentally friendly, it's also very expensive. So, we don't have original windows (thank god), and lost some period features when the interior walls were insulated (thank god), so we can put some of that back. There are companies that specialize in restoration and recreation (especially for missing pieces). Same with old radiators. There are companies that specialize in taking old radiators and restoring them. That is what we do with ours. The new ones have to be huge to have the same power as the old ones (plus they look nicer and are cheaper than reproductions). Same with original floors. Important for us was original wood floors. Tile floors are easy to get - there are also companies that specialize in reproduction. Converting the usage of an outbuilding can have a big impact on your property taxes so get the balance right. We also wanted to do a lot of gardening - vegetables, etc, but never got around to it because of the enormous amount of work and when we did do it we couldn't maintain it and it was overgrown with weeds. Lesson learned, now we go to the farmers market. It's a tremendous amount of work having a chateau, and even unused outbuildings and remote parts of the park still need maintenance, and if you let it go it can snowball.

Hi there. Thank you so much for your thoughtful and informative comment. We are very grateful to you. Our current house in a mid-century modern rambling ranch with about 650 square meter and 3.5 acres of completely abandoned yard. I'm afraid I agree with you on the windows. we replaced all 34 of ours, did insulation, every efficient furnaces etc. About 80% of the renovation was done by us. We are no afraid of the work. But we very much appreciate your input. We grow some veggies now but also have our crazy Irish Terriers. As for property taxes, we have friends in France that have suggested a specialist they use. Our property taxes on our house were almost $18.000 per year. Going up every year a bit. It's awful. We, like you, are looking for original floors. The radiator tip is brilliant. Thank you so much. We can't thank you enough and hope that, in the future, when we are in France, scratching our heads, we may reach out to you.

@@wenDesigner gosh, I love how you think. Exactly like we do. What is not there, we can build! We have done that a few times. Our current property was completely overgrown with buckthorn. I write a monthly lifestyle blog, which came about from being stuck in the house. Its a lifestyle Blog. I am going KZfaq soon myself. It has been odd trying to keep it interesting whilst doing a 300 day lock-down in Melbourne! But I still find much to write about and do... I agree, there must be a wine involved whilst writing... Hey Robert. If there is an attic above the bedrooms, it's possible to run AC. Forced heat.... Well, us Europeans don't do that well for the most part. There are thermostats for radiators now, that helps a bit. Like you, I think 10 minus to a smaller town and a max of 25 to a larger city with hospitals, people (if one has a desire to see them) and amenities is a must. Love your comments. Thank you!!!

Hey Janet. Does it show that we need to have certain things organized and planned? The result of our search will likely not have all items we want. And of course, certain things can be added. Fountains, a walled garden, etc. But we have had quite an education on our true likes and needs/wants and since this is a huge move, that’s a good thing. Stuart’s Toiles are so pretty. He will give you a link. Thank you so much. Summer house in Maine sound absolutely lovely. Thank you for your great comment! Be safe 🌹

Very nice video. I do think your must have of a boulangerie 10 minutes away is unrealistic and should just be a wish. You can always make your own. And just think, you want to be in the country yet relegated yourself to less than 7 miles from town. There are other things more important than bread on your list. Finding a chateau that is 30 minutes to a hospital won't be easy. Don't let your must have and wish list limit you. Remember the big stuff. Condition of the chateau. Water on site. Some gite outbuildings. But ultimately, i think y'all will just know when you've found the right one.

Hi there and a Happy New Year. All true! I'd love to have a boulangerie close by just because I like most germans, can't help it, I love bread. A hospital and veterinarian are quite important. We passed on one chateau because it was over 90 minutes to the next hospital.. Since we always try to do most of the work ourselves and I can be a big clumsy idiot, it may be important. 😜 Of course you are right, there are big items like condition of the roof and chateau in general and outbuildings etc. Your conclusion is highly likely spot on. Once we see that one property that make the heart jump, for whatever reason, we will know. Bakery close by or not! Loved your comment! 🥂🥂🥂🥂.

Great ideas. I am guessing that by now (I am catching up and watching the videos in order) you have decided on your heating method(s). For whatever it may be worth, I would avoid relying on one heating source. Gas/oil are likely to get vastly more expensive and may even end up being rationed, no joke in a freezing European winter! I would go for a mix of some gas/oil and wood options. Or possibly even solar heating, which I understand can work in winter, with the right system. Thank you for the video!

Hi Dorothy. So glad you like the vlog and that we share the same taste. Finding a chateau is not easy. Having to travel this far makes things much more difficult. Our British chateau vloggers have it quite a bit easier and I’m quite jealous. Moving 9 dogs and furniture is the one thing I am really dreading. We’ll get through that! If we have anything we can share in terms of experiences and tips, we’ll gladly help you when you get ready for your petit chateau. Thank you for your support.

Hi Elisabeth. Thanks for your kind comment. Glad we can get our knowledge out there. I always feel like a bumbling idiot. As for Mid-century to 18th century it is a huge leap - you couldn’t have put it any better. We realized that we had one more huge adventure in us. If we’d wait 10 more years, we might never go. While traveling we often said: wouldn’t it be great!?! Started looking and found chateaux channels. Here we are ready to jump. We appreciate your support more than I can say.

@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 Hmmm...I'd substitute "utterly charming" for "bumbling idiot"! And this world needs as much charm as it can get! You have such a great mix of very organized maps, layouts, and examples combined with the back and forth of genuine conversation. I think if things get too perfect it no longer feels like we are there with you, sharing in the journey. I am usually a very active person but last January had a knee replaced and this September a shoulder, so the chateau channels have been such a great escape for me as I've been cut off from my usual activities (and friends re Covid.) Yours is a great addition to chateauland - on the topic but so different. (And it is extra fun to recognize things like, Hey! That's Terry and Ash's fireplace!) Kudos to you for taking the leap. I'm envious!

@@elisabeth6108 Happy Friday. First: I'm so sorry about the surgeries. That is never fun. Hope you are on the way to full recovery and mobility. As far as charm goes, this world can surely use more charm and more kindness. Rude people make me frustrated. I understand what you mean with too perfect. Some videos lack relatable content for us. Terry and Ash always have great content as do Philipp and Anna. We are really happy that you like our (Stuart's) formate. He wanted to create a vlog that was different. We can't wait to find and buy our new adventure. Moving with all our dogs and some furniture seem like one huge undertaking. Once there, this vlog will be different I suppose. Hopefully you'll come visit some day and find your chateau too......! Thank you for being so supportive.

Hi Roseanne. Thank you and glad you liked the vlog. Until I saw the vlog today, I want,t fully aware, that we had such a long list…. It is indeed our own wine storage. We have a mid-century modern house that is very open. Across from the dining room was a huge built in storage closet. We tore it out and Stuart designed the wine wall. I stained and finished the wood and then we built it.

Evening Patrick and Stuart, Like I mentioned previously buying property, you have to have your wits about you. As you were explaining the "must have" and the "wish list" that is exactly how to go about. With today's electronic facilities it does help us with decisions. I am sure you are going to buy a winner. I have no idea what it looks like on the outside, I am trying to get info regarding that. I think one item you did not mention or I missed out is this - do you wish a moot around the chateau, do you? There are advantages and disadvantages eg. the keeping clean and aeration of the water.. Yet, once you have moved in and cleaning and repairing to your likes you are 95% there to keep things on the go. Many blessings and we trust and hope you will get the chateau of your hearts desire. Kind regards. Au revoir

Hello there Dear Hannah in Normandy! Glad you like the Wall of Wine (life is better with a glass of wine I think). There was a huge built in closet in that spot. It was one project that was just for fun after 3 years of renovations on our current home. We needed that!. Where about in normandy are you? Hi Paranihia. That is a very valid point. We started this journey in the spring before COVID. We have to believe, that there will be a time when this pandemic will be more manageable and the pharmaceutical protection is better. There will always be events. Not necessarily huge crowds. We have friends who teach yoga worldwide. That would be a good group to have. And gites for people who want to be out of larger cities for a while can bring in some business.
