In addition to Dorian Harewood (not Haywood), there is also a cameo of a then-unknown Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs ("Cooley High", "Welcome Back Kotter") and of Chip Fields, the mother of future "Facts Of Life" star Kim. Very informative PSA. (P.S.-That is Adolphe Caesar providing the voiceover. He was one of TV's first successful black commercial v/o's)

Another soon-to-be-famous V/O - NBC's Fred Facey, who was first hired by the network as staff announcer in 1967 and would remain there till his death in 2003 - made a rare on-camera appearance as the instructor who advised the assembled students in class that the course he was to give had been cancelled. You can't mistake his voice as he gives the students the bad news. (He also, five years from this, would appear as Mr. Baxter, the man behind the counter selling Preparation H anti-hemorrhoid cream.) Someone else who saw this says Alfre Woodard also appeared in this PSA.

I remember very well these beautifully powerful commercials when I was young. There was one, in particular, that can't seem to find, showing a woman scrubbing floors so that her son could go to college.

One of our most influential commercials of All Time. Staring 8 Ball (full metal jacket), Cochise AKA Freddie Boom Boom Washington and Chip Fields AKA Kim Fields mom and more importantly Penny's mom.

There were actually TWO announcers in this PSA - the off-camera voice of Adolph Caesar and, in a rare on-camera cameo, NBC New York (and WNBC-TV) staff announcer Fred Facey, as the college instructor who ruefully advises the assembled students (including Mr. Harewood and Mr. Hilton-Jacobs) that the course he was to give had been cancelled. (I am perhaps the first to have noticed Mr. Facey here.) Between this and his later high-profile gigs ("Today," "Meet the Press"), Facey ultimately overshadowed the true "first" African-American to be hired as full-time staff announcer - CBS New York's (and WCBS-TV/AM/FM) Pat Connell, who was so hired in March 1961, 11 months after they first hired him as a summer replacement announcer. (Mr. Connell would remain with the 'Tiffany Network' up to his retirement in the early '90's.)

Really wish education were as valued today like it was back then. In many homes of the day, not getting educated was not an option when the opportunity was there.

Ye, now days teachers only wish that students were so eager to be educated they way they were back then. Sad that getting educated was seen as a social crime, if black, or person of color, way back in the earlier days of this nation.

I don't remember that one, but the one I remember is this-a black woman, who is middle aged (presumably) has virtually no education or skills is shown in a prison scrubbing floors, and she sobs so as she desperately needs money to get her son to college.

j85 no, it's Mr Dorian Harewood from Full Metal Jacket and Roots The Next Generation and The Jesse Owens Story and the other great roles he's been in and the songs he's sang. I'd at least have liked you and others posting to at least get his name right before sending!
