In China and other Asian countries, they are very community oriented and would not do that, as opposed to many Americans who are more individually motivated. Not saying one is better or worse, they just have a different way of viewing the world. That said, traditional small American neighborhoods used to also behave this way as well but somewhere along the way that has become lost. I dont know why.

In the US, the ice cream freezers would probably be emptied and the cash box would vanish. That would have been the end of the ice cream store. We used to live in an apartment in Maryland and a neighbor often stole our newspapers from our front door.

That’s so interesting that they still live nearby and didn’t fly off elsewhere. 😝 My family has the reverse of your story. Someone else’s pet lovebird escaped or was set free and showed up at our bird feeders and kept clinging to our window screen as though he wanted to be brought inside . We let him in and got him a cage in our kitchen. he never ever left the cage , even with the door open , he was a house bird for life , hahaha.

In the states the shower is usually built by applying concrete mortar over the subfloor, with a shower pan liner embedded for additional water proof. We are remodeling our home in New Jersey because if the shower pan expired, you can get water damage on the downstairs ceiling, and wooden subfloor becomes rotten and you can get mold. Black mold can be dangerous for children.

Thesis done!!! Yay, congratulations! What a relief and sense of accomplishment. Are revisions still pending, or is it done done? Do take the time to explore China on your bike as you mentioned in your recent interview. I hope Wei can join you. A long bike ride in the country sounds idyllic and will make for lasting and great memories down the road. You only get one ride around the world. Make it the journey you want Katherine. All the ice cream you could want? Now that is dangerous! PS, sorry to hear about your knee. Perhaps orthotics would help if flat feet or high arches are an issue. Sometimes, time off is the best solution. Look forward to your future adventures.

The outdoor fitness equipments actually do exist in the US, just not as common. They are along a fitness trail in a little village I live in, population 2,500. The heating lights in the ceiling also exist in the US. In some very old homes, 100 years or so. The heating system consists of the boiler (albeit a natural gas fueled newer one) and radiators. So the bathrooms are not warm enough. Hence the heating lights in the ceiling. I do enjoy living in the sticks in the US as an immigrant. I'm not a fan of a suburban life.

Okay: let´s share. Some houses have a tube in which they throw the dirty clothes. It lands in the washing machine room in the bottom. People here use dryers. Or they hang clothes outside if they have a garden. In cold countries, we have "air room" as to save energy. Sometimes rats enter them. How? a mystery. Many people plant in high plantations in their garden and thry to be a bit autonomous. This is close to or inside cities. In the mountains everywhere. You ll find high plantations made of metall, or wood.

Katherine, there are two other key differences indoors: (1) the stove in a US kitchen is mostly electrical but is mostly using gas in China (2) almost all US homes have a big oven but that is extremely rare in China.

my first stove in china was like a first love of mine, they are so much more powerful and superior to gas stoves in US! it was in my first apartment which was massive bargain for rent (so certainly not as nice as the one in this video haha) and overall pretty shoddy, when we went to see the unit the last tenants had completely DESTROYED the stove like beyond recognition so it was replaced by the management there before moving in… best surprise ever, it blew my mind when i first moved in (after cooking on hotplate in dorm for some time ha) the flame is huge and boiled anything so quickly, all the sudden i could whip up vegetable soup in what seemed like no time, that stove was SO MUCH more efficient to use than any stoves in the US… when i came back to US to visit my parents eventually, i tried to boil something on their american gas stove it seemed to take so long i genuinely thought i was losing my mind, could not believe it had always just been like that!

Love your videos! One thing I have to point out is that in Nanjing and the surrounding areas, it's a bit difficult for clothes to dry in the summer, especially during the raining season. It can often smell moldy. In Beijing and the northern areas your clothes will literally dry in a few hours, which is great. Also, the package delivery system can be different in each gated community. Not every community has a storage area with lots of ice cream.

Fun fact, those exercise equipments are almost exclusively funded by lottery money. China technically has only two sanctioned lottery operators, both are considered part of the government apparatus. @@kats_journey_east Yes I was referring to squat toilets. I think your apartment is newer and in a tier 1 city - hence more likely to have modern facilities. I remember watching Gweilo60's youtube video of his home in Nanning and he had a squat toilet. I think the use of a squat toilet is likely one of the biggest cultural shock for most Westerners. The Toilet Revolution (厕所革命) started in 2015 by President Xi will likely see the demise of the squat toilets from public washrooms and I believe the improved WC norms will be adopted in all homes across China. Since Wei wanted a dishwasher, I guess he is designated for more dish washing duties then. 😊

@@philipshim4768 Squat toilet is either in very old apartment, or public toilet. Now in cities, I think 90% aparment is with western toilet. Toilet Revolution is not meant to convert squat toilet to western toilet but improve the facility and cleaness. People prefer squat toilet in public because no need to contact.

@@philipshim4768 Squat toilets are never that common in households, but only in public facilities! Ppl prefer public squat toilets coz it seems more hygienic (as Mike says no contact) hahah!

@@philipshim4768 Nanjing is a tier 2 city, also generally there are no squat toilets in apartments built in the last 30 years in China, even in tier 6 cities. They only exist in schools, some old public facilities and extremely old apartments.

Stray dogs in the US are now rare, but stray cats are still a fairly common sight in some parts (I'm in FL, and used to live in NYC)

yea, I've never seen any stray dogs in the US. But for stray cats, I could say almost half a dozen of them would visit my backyard in Brooklyn almost everyday

Love watching your videos and how you document your life in China, so much fun to watch them. A minor, if random thing, that has intrigued me is your Union Jack pillow. I would have thought you’d have a Stars and Stripes pillow being an American. What’s the story behind that pillow? Greetings from Canada.

Glad you like the videos 😎🌻the story about the pillow is pretty boring haha, we are renting this apartment and that pillow as well as various others came with it 😂😂 it’s not actually mine . I only own one sofa pillow , my Kim jong un pillow , I think he hasn’t made an appearance in a video yet . Maybe it’s about time to bring him onscreen🤣

Drier is definitely getting more popular in China. Most my friends have driers at home now. Driers are lifesavers!!

That unit with heating bulbs can be switched between 2 or 4 bulbs and high/low intensity. (I put those in my house in China) I guess in your house they took the cheap/easy "shortcut"and only put the 4 bulbs on/off option on 1 switch. When you want the 2/4 switchable option you need some more wiring and switches, using 4 bulbs at the same time is too bright, in most cases choosing 2 bulbs is bright and hot enough.

dryer cost too much electricity it is cooler to use UV sunlight to kill the germs, secondary is if is still humid in the winter time it actually improved a lot of indoors air humidity.

There are street cates in Canada as well. Studies show that they kill lots of animals, including birds. I think the cat in the video was trying to catch birds.

The level of trust is not possible here in major US cities. Heck, not even in the suburbs. People routinely get packages stolen from their doorsteps. That mailroom would be a porch pirate’s wet dream.
