A few years back, I heard crocodile rock while at some cheesy beach giftshop, and started trying not to laugh my ass off, to the mild confusion of my dad. First thing I did when we got back in the car was show him this, and while he doesn’t laugh often, this made him absolutely lose it. It was just me and him, laughing our asses off at this dumb mashup, and honestly, it was one of the best three minutes I’ve experienced. Thanks, Neil

@sterlingdragon1237 жыл бұрын
the automatic assumption of irony when dealing with mashups as a genre is challenged by neil cicierega's albums. that's like... if there is any "point" it's that, i think, as shown by the fact that the first song in the two-album experience is samples from All Star by Smash Mouth set to the tune of the high-class, "deep and complex music" classical song "Pictures at an Exhibition: Promenade" by Mussorgsky. the contrast between both the sort of joked about early 2000s/late-90s crappy pop-rock stuff, and the mashup genre itself, and high society stuff like mussorgsky is, i think, carrying a message of there not really being a difference between any of those things, and music can be awesome and enjoyable to listen to even if it is made out of other music

That's the Cicierega effect. It's when you listen to a song, and remember that it was in a mash-up made by Neil himself. Your brain then supplants the lyrics or instrumental backing of the mashup on top of the original song's.

@@PokerBEAST He's pioneered so many things... you know those early internet videos where they'd play a weird song and move some MS-Paint level art around? That's called an animutation and he basically invented it. For a more recent example that a lot of people know but don't know it's him -- Potter Puppet Pals.

I miss the 90's a lot more than Neil does... Because Neil never left the 90's. They say he fell asleep one night marathoning cartoon network groovies he'd recorded on his VCR. He wasn't seen again until he returned three days later, with Silly Putty for a heart and dilute Gogurt flowing through his veins.

I feel like Neil has heard one of these songs so many times to the point where it fills him with unbridled rage, and this was his attempt at some sort of maniacal revenge. The scary part is that I can't tell which of the two he's trying to brutalize.
