It's intimidation and fear of looking stupid. It paralyzes people. And academics know that. If you use obscure words that people don't understand and speak with the condescending tone of a lifelong academic you can intimidate people into submission. Even if you're wrong and the other person is right they will still submit to you because they're so scared of looking stupid. And the bigger your ego is the bigger your fear of looking stupid is. They actually proved this in a study where they put a group of children against a group of CEOs and the challenge was who could build the tallest structure out of popsicle sticks in 30 minutes. The children ended up winning because they had no egos and considered every idea while the CEOs were too scared to throw out ideas because of their paralyzing fear of looking foolish.

I was moved by Felix's jump, not because of his proximity to space, or the technology involved. Had to do with the human spirit and determination. Takes balls to go up there, jump, break the sound barrier (the point of the jump was to break the sound barrier, not jump from space, just so happens that you kinda need little to no air to free fall at those speeds) then land on your feet like a boss. I'm a "normal" person, but no one got exited due to the "space" aspect of the free fall. Has to do with the speeds he reached, and the control he exuded. Unless I'm more intelligent than most, and I'm giving the majority of people too much credit lol.

On a huge dose of crystal lsd, during the 'harmonic convergence' (was that 1988/9?), I had a wormhole experience with three other humans. I met who appeared to be a man I thought and still sometimes think had some sort of map to more of them. That entire summer was filled with fantastic improbable experiences, many of them bending my perspective of time space. I came home and tattooed a set of three rainbow triangles on my ankle. Just sayin. ;)
