Welcome to Amity Tracks. This is a channel where we discuss a wide range of music related topics. The focus will be on music from the 1960’s through the 1990’s, but not exclusively. Classic rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, jazz, blues, folk, country, soul…all genres are fair game. From time to time we may dabble in other popular culture, such as film, history or sports. But music is primarily what we do here. The focus is on the music and the artists. We hope to encourage an open and dynamic community with fun and informative discussions not only in the videos, but also in the comments section. Please note that, while disagreement and discussion is welcome, no personal attacks or out of bounds comments will be tolerated. We want to be a part of the positive larger vinyl community and other like-minded, music focused communities.

Nice job. If you asked 100 different people, you would get 100 different rankings of Neil's catalogue. He's sort of the ultimate artist in that way. He follows the muse wherever it takes him, no matter what, and you gotta admire that, even if it sometimes results in bad albums. My favorite period is 1968 to 1973, I think that's when he was at his absolute best. But I love a lot of his later '70s stuff, and '90s stuff, too.

Nice work!! I’ve grown old with Neil Young’s music. Lucky enough to see him tour Tonight’s The Night in UK - a year before album release. Support that tour was bunch of fresh faced guys called the Eagles. Later saw him tour Trans. Still play Everybody Knows album probably once a month - my number one, but that’s the beauty of these lists.

Good rankings and I like your top 3. I saw Neil play a live solo show after Freedom came out and it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. His guitar sound was out of this world - distorted echoey and massive

Great job. I have seen a few of these lists throughout the years and nobody came close to getting it right, in my opinion. I think you did a great job and definitely nothing touches Rust Never Sleeps. I would have had Comes a Time in this list and swapped out Stars 'N Bars. Was nice to see a real fan. I haven't been a fan of his later stuff, mostly pure drivel. However, the ones you mentioned in these last 15 were epic works. I have/had them all in albums and cd formats. Unfortunately the ones I don't have anymore were autographed albums that disappeared mysteriously. Although I still do have a signed bootleg which is one of my most cherished albums and memories. I was lucky enough to see him 4 times and meet him on two of those occasions. Great guy and great musician. Thanks for putting this together, it brought back a lot of good memories.

That's really cool. I've seen him about 5 times (once with that shortlived group he called The Restless back in 89, then twice with Booker T & the MGs, once with CSNY and once solo acoustic). I'm seeing him soon with Crazy Horse, finally. Never met him though.

💗Eldorado. The argument for 50 years has been Everybody Knows this is Nowhere vs After the Goldrush. BUT: What gets overlooked is his soundtrack for Dead Man, which is finally getting recognized as best film of the 90’s.

Man, you're delusional. Anyone who proclaims the soundtrack for Dead Man among Neil's best and calls that execrable film "the best of the 90s" is way off the deep end, approaching the rocks below. And NY hasn't produced a decent album in more than 25 years.

This is an excellent ranking vid of Neil, like seriously how good is this artist he's comfortably one of the greats and he's my favourite too! I love the inclusion of Freedom as your 3rd favourite, that is a belting record that I reckon is highly underrated to be honest. My top 10 Neil records for myself would have to be: 1. On the Beach 2. Zuma 3. Tonight's the Night 4. After the Gold Rush 5. Rust Never Sleeps 6. Everybody Knows this is Nowhere 7. Harvest 8. Greendale (I know highly controversial!) 9. Sleeps with Angels 10. Harvest Moon 11. Freedom 12. Ragged Glory 13. Re-ac-tor 14. Time Fades Away 15. The Visitor (and it really has grown on me it used to be quite down there)

Cool list. Brave man having Goldrush and Harvest outside your Top 5 lol. My top 15 would be quite similar, although i would have Broken Arrow and Prairie Wind in there. Love those 2 albums. Glad you mentioned Bandit and Razor Love in the last video - two of Young's greatest songs imo. If I had to pick a fav it would be On The Beach, as i think it's just perfect songwriting, particularly on side 2 with Ambulance Blues. But really I wouldnt argue with anyone who chose any of your top 10 as their fav. Stuart

Loved your rankings. Your top 3 was quite different from mine, but all three of those records are 5 star records for me. The guy just has too much material. I thought it was great to see Freedom in there. Such an underrated one for me. I picked up that ORS box to finally have Ragged and Freedom and Weld on LP and was pretty blown away by Freedom. I'm picking it out for regular rotation again after watching this.

Thanks! Freedom has been a favorite for me since it came out. That was one of my most memorable concert experiences. Neil was touring for This Note's For You, but at the show I saw in Houston he had already sacked The Bluenotes and played a lot of Freedom, even though he had not released it yet. That was the loudest concert I have ever attended. I want to do a most memorable concerts video or series, and will expand on that story. I am convinced I lost some hearing that night, but it was worth it.

Very nice list. And as a longtime Neil Young fan since After the Gold Rush, my top ten list has mostly his earlier albums along with Harvest Moon. (You mentioned Linda Ronstadt doing backing vocals on one of the albums. So far, nobody on KZfaq has done a Ronstadt ranking. You ought to do a Ronstadt top ten.)

@@amitytracks I hadn't twigged you were a History teacher. So am I! What are your thoughts on Neil's 'history'? You love 'Mideast Vacation', yes? A lot of those 80s things were steeped in the politics of the time. 'Comin' Apart At Every Nail'? 'Union Man'? A 'grumpy' millionaire isn't my choice of political commentator. That said, live music is better (as you have shared with 'A Treasure'/Old Ways and 'Bluenote Cafe/This Notes For You') bumper stickers should be issued.

Asking because I don't actually know, but wasn't "Sweet Home Alabama" actually a reaction to Neil's song "Alabama?" I'm not sure about the chronology and too lazy to look it up right now. --- Regarding #1 picks: I find that 'After the Gold Rush' has the best flow and feel as-an-album of all. But it's just one fine song after the next. By the time "Cripple Creek Ferry" floats into view I feel like my soul has been washed somehow. An all time top ten album to my taste, none of his other albums are.

The top albums are roughly correct except for El Dorado. It's more important to assess the peak and the long decline of NY's career. He produced numerous classic songs and a few classic albums, but his muse left the building about 25 years ago and his albums since then have been an offensively bad collection of undistinguished "songs" lacking any decent melody or lyrical content. Neil seems to be devoid of a creative filter and just seems to churn out more garbage with no self-awareness or editorial judgment at all. That's been the case for virtually all his albums in the last 25 years--slack music, often embarrassing non-songs, produced because the self-indulgent Neil Young thinks it's fun and his "fans" need another dose of undistinguished trash. .
