Neil Young is universally known as one of the most prolific and enduring artists in music history, and as two close friends and huge Neil fans we decided to sit down and hash out our personal top 10 albums. Big thanks to my good friend Luke for doing this video with me.
This was a fun little video to make, we kept our lists a secret to keep things interesting and we had some fun little banter about these records and why we love them so much.
Thanks for checking out the video, comment below your thoughts and share your albums, or whatever else you'd like to say!

Wait, do some people seriously not like A Man Needs A Maid? I’ve always thought it was one of the best songs off Harvest. So full of emotions.

the lyrics are pretty outdated, the songs super cheesy, just never was a good song in my opinion. Harvest has so many other better tunes than that one

@@crowetv9964 "Live at Massey Hall" has a great version where Neil performs A Man Needs a Maid/Heart of Gold as a medley suite. It's a refreshing look at the song, as the orchestral sound of the studio version can be a little overwhelming and bombastic.There have been occasional complaints about sexism in the lyrics, but I think that's a bit misplaced. The lyrics are no more problematic than "Cowgirl in the Sand", and I think have been misunderstood. Also, imho, Stars 'n' Bars has some great songs but is inconsistent. Then again, "country rock" is hit or miss for me, so it's a matter of taste.

You guys had the same final 3. Just in a different order. And I love all 3. Music is life. I'm detoxing and this video has been a blessing. Gonna throw "On The Beach" on now! God bells you! My favorite is "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere." "Round & Round" slays me to this day. Makes me want to cry... I think "Through My Sails" off Zuma is one of the most beautiful tunes ever.

Top 4 or 5 Neil albums often switch places but the one constant at number one for me is TTN. An achingly raw and honest piece of work. The fragility and almost falling over the edge vibe on that album always blows me away. They just about keep it together after recording with the aid of Tequila and joints etc. And it shows. So much atmosphere and heart. Not his 'best' vocal performance ever but my God it's my favourite. You can feel the hurt and desperation in his throat.

Great video!! My route to Neil is maybe a little different. I've been listening to NY's Decade triple vinyl for years but I've just started exploring, and love his live albums. I've been listening to Songs for Judy this week and Tuscaloosa. I've got Tonight's the Night on now. Oh my - its fantastic. I feel lucky I can really listen to so many albums for the first time.

ON The Beach is Number one for me...Do you know how it was recorded ? Just the history of the recording tells it all. Ok there it is: Neil Young was recording Tonights the night in the other studio and he needed air, he was smash by the whole happening and the pain and etc. So he goes in the other studio and he just starts playing , improvising words and clear his body and mind of everything...just in another state of mind his recordind his sub-conscient...Than after he worked the album and refuse to put out Tonightand put out On the beach first... Only after he accepted to put out Tonight...At the same time he didn't do any interview for 2 years...i ended up alone at the microphone...

It's very different going through and make a top ten like you do, young persons, and us that we lived the 70,s at the time...when the music arrived with our youth, when THE MUSIC was THE CULTURE. Not one thing cultural among others cultural thing. So making a list for me who is 63 got an emotionnal involvement totally different because stuck with what was happening at the time around and in my life, following him trough concerts and interview....I will give you an example: I live in Montreal and Neil was making a show in TO but not coming to Montreal. So on the train again to Maple Leaf garden, smoke our heards off , sit and then hear for the first time HEY HEY MY MY and songs from RNS...It wasn't out yet and hearing live for the first time is THE thing...now everything is seen trough the era and the leitmotiv of:It is now and here. Not 45 years later. Like the only show at The Bottom line NY (solo) of 74 and On the beach is played almost entirely...now guess my list with the emotional involvement lol

“I never knew a man who could tell so many lies. He had a different story for every set of eyes. How can he remember who he’s talking to. But, I know it isn’t me. And I hope it isn’t you.” Also “you’re only pissing in the wind. You don’t know it, but you are. But there ain’t nothin’ like a friend who will tell you that you’re just pissing in the wind.” Both from “Ambulance Blues” from “On the Beach.” Written when he was just 24. Favorite artist of this 65 year old’s life.

Agree with 99% guys and really enjoyed your video. My top ten would have to include his first one tho. Probably because I found it in a church jumble sale in the mid nineties and played it to death for a year maybe, then forgot about it until quite recently when I've been getting back into Neil in a big way. Saw that same record go on ebay for 200 recently so I'm glad I looked after it (it's an early pressing which was recorded in a way he didn't like - so subsequent versions were mastered differently)! I also like making up my own albums and I've done one of the Buf Spring songs and demos which holds together so well I love it. Like, how cool is 'Sell Out'?
@greglapointe1311
@greglapointe1311 4 жыл бұрын
The one that was selling on Ebay for 200 was probably one of the first pressings that didn't have his name across the front. I picked up one of those years ago but I know I didn't pay anywhere near that. I agree, I really like that album and Sell Out is a cool little song. There are 2 versions of that song, an edited down version and a longer one.

I absolutely detested On the Beach when I first heard it. But, as with many of his best albums (including Time Fades Away, Tonight's the Night and, in latter years, Americana), it's now at the top of my list and would be my Neil Young desert island album. It's not an album for surface dwellers, but once you open up to it, no album by Neil or anyone else will take you as deep.

Psychedelic Pill is a unique choice. I'm in my 60s and seeing Neil with Crazy Horse was always on my bucket list and I finally saw them at the Austin City Limits music fest in 2012. This was an enjoyable watch - thanks guys! And I concur with your Top 3, with Tonight’s, Rust, and Gold Rush rounding out my top 6 (interchangeable order). “Live album” as a category... sure it technically means “recorded live,” but 99% of the time (in rock and pop) it implies a semi-greatest hits collection, with some deep cuts and the very occasional new song. To call “Rust” a love album may be technically correct, but it’s an album full of new stuff, a legit “part of the canon,” and the follow up “Live Rust” is much more of “a live record” as traditionally understood. Love the love for the highly-underrated “Ragged Glory”! Better than the more-praised record from around the same period, “Freedom” (which does have some excellent songs but suffers from crummy early-digital sound, something audiophile Neil rarely fell prey to). Another underrated gem from a few years later: “Mirror Ball,” Neil with Pearl Jam. They obviously love Crazy Horse and do their best to create the raw roar, and they get pretty close. Songs are very good. Better than its near-contemporary “Sleeps With Angels,” which again got more critical praise. By the way, gotta tease you a bit: how can “I could’ve put this one higher” apply to every record? Then you... I mean... that couldn’t... oh well, fun video 😃

Can't say I've heard all of Neil's LPs. but most probably as I have been a fan of his music since Buffalo Springfield. I thought "Life" best of the Geffen Era. His very 1st "Neil Young" solo effort. Both deserve a mention. Freedom, Prairie Wind, Chrome Dreams 2, Le Noise, impossible. Would take a mighty long time to rank. Would have to be done by Era. No way you could leave out Gold Rush or Harvest. Too much great stuff, all the different bands. Totally ridiculous. International Harvesters rank high. And on and on and on..whew.!

Man needs a Maid .. just ignore the lyrics (except for the line that ends like a 'Beggar going door to door" and the a way Neil sings it is kinda cool. Theres a word in not very good at all, and can i be more sick of Heart of Gold.. Out on the Weekend is better and more interesting, imo, after 25 listens

PHYSCHEDLIC PILL is the best Neil of the 21st century, 'Walk Like A Giant' one of best Crazy Horse songs ever, as is 'Ramada Inn', Silver and Gold is also good from 21st century, most his other newer stuff sucks, PEACE TRAIL all time worse album ever made

list is personal but you two are still funny and redicuolus. Personal or not you should follow some general values . Your work is similar to some Beatles fun who start with Sgt Pepper or White Album on place 10.

Don"t know what you guys were smoking. What does the album covers or the typography have to do with evaluating an album? So lame. 5 thru 10 don't belong there. 1 through 5 needs to be re-arranged. Nowhere is trend setting and belongs on anybody's top 25 of all time.

Zuma and On the Beach are average albums, Harvest, After the Goldrush, and Everybody knows this is Nowhere, are classics, you two spend too much time together, listening to average music, nothing great about Zuma or On the Beach, a handful of nice songs.
