Hey there, Neil Young fans! If you recognize that little lick, it's from "Old Man," one of his earlier tunes. Today, I want to show you how I play it on acoustic guitar. It's in the key of D, and one interesting thing is that F he hits, which is really like a D chord moved up to the fifth fret. Then, you open up that E string to get this sound. You can lead off with the D string.
I'm hitting a pattern that goes back to G with a second finger hammer-on on the second fret of the high E string, a James Taylor move.
With iconic tunes like this, playing it exactly as the record is fine, but I always say learn it first and then improvise to make it your own. I tend to do whatever works for me, whether it's the key or arrangement.
It's a beautiful day here in Maui-sunny with a little wind. Good to see you all! If you want to hit me up at jimmyDillon.co... , we've got some fun stuff for you there. I'd love to hear your comments and any song ideas or feedback on the lessons. I'm always open to it. See you down the road!
